Another great season in Mammoth. It turned out to be the third snowiest winter on record! Over 500 inches and it's still coming. We received eight inches last Tuesday, making the spring skiing very soft! Hope everyone had a great winter. It's that time of the year again, time to pull the sandals out and put on some shorts. Friday January 15th to Tuesday 9th March, 2010 Closed since September for a maintenance and upkeep programme that consisted of one vacuuming, two scrubs of the pan and a wipe of the window sills the 'Sty' officially once again opened it’s doors to visitors in mid January with the visit of my old compadre Paul ‘Moose’ Murray. I’d been waiting in anticipation of our reunion at LAX arrivals for over half an hour when he finally emerged into view, a solitary sports bag no bigger than Dick Whittington’s hamper slung haphazardly across his shoulder, wearing a scowl and scuttling across the concourse at a pace that depicted a man on a mission whilst nervously scanning around, presumably for me, like a meerkat on the lookout for predators. If I was Customs and Excise I’d have had ... read more

When: Labor day weekend :: 5th Sep - 7th Sep Where: The lakes at Mammoth :: Devils postpile in the Eastern Sierras :: Ancient bristle cone forest in the White mountains Dreaming of visiting the place we'd always wanted to visit, we set out early saturday morning. The place is a good 7 hr drive from where we call home. Our so-far-trust-worthy cell phone alarm failed & we woke up 1 hr late to leave 1.5 hrs later. So much for a good & early start Nevertheless, we were not to be disheartened. Half way along, I remember reading a sign, "hwy 120 closed into Yosemite National Park". I remember asking Ganesh if he read the sign. He was like ..... As we got closer to the park, there were more signs informing closure of Tioga ... read more

... read more

We will be working with the FaceLift rock climbers Yosemite National Park clean-up; Friday, Saturday, and Sunday; September 25,26,27. Then we plan to pull our 28' 5th wheel over Tioga Pass and look for a good place to hook-up. I drove through June lake and didn't see anything even near great. I know there's a large RV site in Mammoth Lakes but I think we'll check out sites around Bishop. We plan to stay Monday thru Thursday nights then drive home.... read more

From Vegas we drove another fair distance and braved the high temperatures of death valley to reach Mammoth Lakes. Matt was occupied for a large portion of the journey by conspiracy theories surrounding 'Area 51' and it's possible whereabouts.. (he saw a sign-like it would be THAT obvious!) Approaching Mammoth was a little surreal as we headed through blistering heat we had a perfect view of snow-capped mountains and signs for shops selling skis etc!! Our hostel was a very 'quaint' little log cabin type arrangement with bunk beds made of big logs and bear carvings all over it. We met a few interesting characters over the 3 days we were there, Glenn the pot-smoking drunk hiker, Jeff the chef who seemed to only eat ready-meals, Chuck the 70 odd year-old marathon runner..you can imagine the ... read more

Breakfast bars and fruit again for breakfast and we hit the road. First stop - Salt Creek, and our first "off road" trip - all 400m of it! A short board-walk around a rather smelly little creek in the middle of - nothing really. Plenty of little fish and the odd bird made it a little desert oasis. Next stop - Scotty's Castle. In the heat we walked - slowly - up to Scotty's Grave on the hill overlooking his castle. We take a few pictures and head inside for lunch. Next stop - Uberhebe Crater. Wow! Much more impressive than I remember!!! And the volcanic landscape around it is incredible. We took the 1/2 mile walk up to the top of the highest rim for a better view. There's also amazing views of the valley ... read more

Spring 2009! It was a great season on Mammoth Mountain; my best ever. We ended with 477 inches of snow!!! I had my first chest deep day and accomplished a lot in my skiing. To end the season, we explored around Mammoth, skiing Hollywood Bowl and Rock Chute, and going to the Reds Meadow Hot Springs. My roommate, Andrew and I took a trip up north with a plan to summit the two volcanoes; Mt. Shasta and Mt. Hood. We were unable to summit either mountain, but we returned with great experiences and all of our appendages intact. Mt. Shasta was our first stop on the trip. We rented crampons and ice axes from a climbing shop in town and got advise from the employees on where to begin our summit attempt. We were advised to ... read more

The past three weeks have been snowy...very snowy. It was waist to chest deep on Tuesday..55 inches in 48 hrs.. After all the work was done we got first run down Viva, the first face-shot caused me to burst out in laughter and after awhile I was fighting for air. It was awesome. Wednesday was a bluebird powder day. I waited in the Gondola line for two and half hours and then had one of the greatest days of my life. ... read more

Thursday December 25th, 2008 to Friday 9th January, 2009 I hate Christmas. Okay, okay, maybe 'hate' is too strong a word but it is certainly something that I struggle to get excited about and come to think about it has been for as long as I can remember. I assume it's because I simply don't like the notion of people finding it necessary to have a justified reason to eat, drink and be merry whilst at the same time being generous and occasionally transparently insincere with the good will to all men! All these things should surely just come naturally ! Proceedings on a clear skied blustery and chilly Christmas morning started early, admittedly much earlier than I'd have preferred with a knock at the door around 8am and the granting of a request from Phil ... read more
