This will literally be a really short one today (as opposed to us saying that yesterday and then writing quite a lot :S), as we really didn't do much today! We got up at around 8am again, lazed around a bit before getting ready for breakfast, where we both had waffles again. We came back up to the room and put some suncream on, and headed down to the beach a bit earlier than usual, ready for a day of sunbathing! We picked a spot a bit closer to the water so we could watch the surfers again and set down our towels ready to catch some rays! We stayed there for a few hours again, and Emma went in the ocean a couple of times (no lifeguard whistle blowing today so she stayed in a ... read more

Today's blog will probably be pretty short and sweet, as most of the day was spent doing exactly the same as what we did yesterday! We woke up slightly later than usual at around 8am, before getting ready to head down to breakfast. This was the usual pancake/waffle batter, and we both opted for waffles with syrup, and Craig also had some jam on his, which was yummy! We wanted to be at the beach fairly early today, but noticed that we were running a little low on suncream, so after checking on the internet for the nearest (and the cheapest) place to get some from, we hopped on the 733 bus for a couple of stops and got off at a CVS pharmacy (this is pretty much exactly the same as boots, but mixed with ... read more

Another day at the beach :( ... lol, j/k. We had planned on having a nice long lie-in today as breakfast is open until about 10:30am, but unfortunately, we both ended up waking up at about 6:50am and couldn't get back to sleep. Since this was way too early for breakfast we played on the netbook for a while in the room to kill some time before getting showered/dressed/presentable to go downstairs. This was our first morning at the hostel but we did have some idea of what breakfast consisted of after reading reviews on the internet. It was fairly simple; ready-to-use pancake/waffle batter, pans (for pancakes) and waffle irons (for waffles, duh) to make them! Emma opted to make herself a couple of pancakes in the pan, whilst Craig decided he'd try his hand with ... read more

After a long and exciting week at Hollywood the time came for us to leave Sunset Boulevard behind. We got up early (about 6:30) to pack up all the stuff that we were too lazy to do the night before. We headed downstairs for our last breakfast at the Travelodge and filled up on toast/cereal (and 2 more blueberry muffins for Craig!). When we'd had our fill, we headed back to the room to grab our bags and cases and checked out at reception before walking to the bus stop about 10 seconds away. As it's a Sunday (and a bank holiday weekend) the buses ran a little less frequent today so we waited about 10-15 minutes for the number 754 that would take us the first leg of the journey. It takes about 30-45 minutes ... read more

So today after a write off of a day, after the Playhouse two nights ago, literally, today we woke up at 4.00am brtight eye and bushy tailed. Venice beach, the only thing Ange wanted to do for the whole trip! Well not so much just to Venice, but more so to Rollerblade along the most popular beach strips in America, if not the world. We did it public transport style and leaped on the bus. Cruised down Hollywood Blvd and then left onto Fairfax. After about twenty minutes or so we got to Fairfax and Venice and leapt off. Onto another line and cruised all the way, through some very interesting suburbs down Venice Blvd and arrived about 40 minutes later in total at Venice Beach. Now I didnt know what to expect, but, best to ... read more

Caro: On the 20th June we had 2 Mondays, 1 in New Zealand and on a flight, the 2nd was in the US as when we arrived in LA it was about 5am and it was STILL Monday. Who wants 2 Mondays in the 1 week, 2 Fridays would be my preferred choice! Having enjoyed New Zealand and the peace and tranquility of a beautiful country we were going to America, it all felt a bit surreal. The flight to LA was OK but quite long and tiring. We arrived - like I say - early morning and worst luck joined the queue with about 100 odd people from Israel who had all been given the wrong forms for their entry into the US and thus were holding the queue up somewhat. When we finally got ... read more

27th March – 15th April 2011 For the first part of our USA and Canada adventure we hired a campervan so after arriving in LA at lunchtime, we were met at the airport by our Escape campervan, which we found was spray-painted with flowers and was called ‘Flower Power’ by the company. We objected to the corporate branding however so we named it ‘Daisy’ for our tenure with the van. It wasn’t long before we were on the road out of LA and heading north. We had 19 days until the van was due back in LA and we had the route planned. We would head up the West coast all the way to Vancouver then come back down in-land stopping off at some national parks on the way. The first major city on the way ... read more

When I returned from Vietnam I found a strange text message on my phone saying that my cousin had died. Mike was a kind of Big Lobowski character who lived in Venice Beach. He didn't allow ambition to run his life, and I admired that. I learned that he had become pathologically withdrawn over the past few years. Although we were once close, I hadn't spoken to him in years. He died alone in his apartment. Apparently his heart just stopped. Determined to have one last reunion, I'm in Venice for Mike's memorial service. +++++ I came down a few days early to catch Robin Mitchell's opening at the Craig Krull Gallery. Robin is a well-established LA artist who happens to be my ex-wife's cousin. She introduces me as her cousin, then explains that we are ... read more
