Hey everybody, Its been a while!! We have made it to New Zealand. Fiji was amazing, but you are going to have to wait for that because this will be the last of the US. Look out for the Fiji blog very very soon…. California, being originally Mexican is very Mexican in places. Los Pueblos is the original LA, established by a group of people, chosen in Mexico, who walked the entire way to set up a village in a relatively unknown area. A plaque here lists all the men, women and children who made the trip. Its an amazing concept. Flagstaff was supposed to be warm, you know, in the middle of the Arizona desert and everything. Apparently the fact that they are 6000ish feet up changes that. So after another night on the train ... read more

LA: 25th - 27th February 2006 As we left the hotel in Las Vegas at 6 am in the morning, the hardcore gamblers were still piling the coins into the slots.... Our flight out of the craziness of Las Vegas to LA got us in around 9am, and we made it to our hostel by 11am (only find that the water would be off until mid afternoon...). We ambled round the corner to wander down Hollywood Blvd (which was a slightly strange anti-climax...think I had this image of spangly lights with the stars on the pavement in some glitzy area, but it's mostly a bit grubby and the stars stretch for miles down this random street that happens to have a few more prestigious tourist attractions in the middle...). We swung by the Kodak Theatre and ... read more

We are in the US of A! We got here on Wednesday after an overnight flight from Rarotonga which included a 2 hour stop off in Tahiti. It could have been nice if it wasn’t 2am in the morning! We are staying in Hollywood. After recovering from the flight we went and explored. We saw the Hollywood sign, Hollywood Boulevard with all the stars in the street and the Chinese Theatre with the hand and foot prints of the stars. I was pleased to find that “The Simpsons” had a star. Tim was shocked to find that John Wayne had such small feet! Yesterday we went to Universal studios which was excellent. They have some great rides (we went on ‘The Mummy’ five times) and lots of shows that tell you how special effects are done ... read more

We are now in LA, which is the last stop on Laura’s round the world tour. We are staying in Hollywood but we have not seen any movie stars yet. Nor have I been spotted as “the next BIG thing”! We did see all the handprints outside Mann’s Chinese Theatre though. I’ll be back in the lab in a few days. Wonder where I will be going next and with whom? ... read more

We packed up and checked out of the Orbit, then had a quick morning tour of the Hollywood must-do activities, such as the Chinese Theatre to look at the hand and foot prints of the stars, did the walk of fame to see all the stars etched in the pavement, then drove as close as we could to the Hollywood sign, and then hiked even closer to it along a dusty track in the hills. You are not actually allowed to go up to the sign but we got fairly close to take some photos while a security CCTV camera buzzed into action and took some photos of us, no doubt :-) Next we took the long way to the airport, driving to Santa Monica then to Venice beach was deserted. Dropped the car off, shuttle ... read more

Hello everybody, just a quick message from LA, I'm staying in Hollywood at the moment, which is a wierd place, havent actually met any americans here yet, everyone is Australian or Canadian. I thought the place was gonna be crime land, but its no worse than London - obviously I havent gone to Compton or anything, that would just be silly. Sorry Im rambling, I have had no sleep in the last 4 days, and Ive done a lot of walking! I met up with this girl from Sydney that Ive been hanging around with, there arent that many people here that are too normal, only the ozzy guys seem ok, there are a lot of people who litterally live in the hostel as they are trying to "Make it" in Hollywood, jackasses, I dont know ... read more

Well for the last stop on my tour I'm in Los Angeles, home to the rich and famous! I'm staying just off Hollywood Blvd and the Hostel arranged a trip up to Ranyon Canyon. From here you can see most of LA and there is a great view of the Hollywood sign. But if they had told me as well as the $6 I paid that I had to walk up a hill to see it I wouldn't have bothered. But if I'm honest the view was something and it's also a great way too meet people plus it proved I'm not the unfittest person in the world as we actually lost someone on the way. At night the've got a bbq going and it's all you can eat for $5 :-) Happy days. A few ... read more

Hello, I am in LA right now, all by my lonesome self in a complete hole called Hollywood. Thankfully today I am on a bus to Santa Cruz to meet up with a friend I haven't seen for 10 years, Kelly. Here's a quick recap of the past few days while I am waiting for my bus. 22nd Jan 06 Chichen Itza ruins, Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico The 8 hour return bus trip was definitely worth it - Chichen Itza was incredible, though in a different way to Tikal and the other ruins. There is something spooky about CI and as an American tourist I happened to pass put it "There's something weird going on here." For example, one building is made entirely of stone blocks that each have a human skull on it. One theory is ... read more

A little over a week ago I spent a day and a half with my brother Kevin in LA. It was good to spend time with Kevin since we mostly see each other at family gatherings and do not get a lot of time just the two of us. We took the afternoon to tour Hollywood and the street with all the star’s names in the pavement. It is really the only tourist thing I have done so far, because I have never done any tourist things in LA. Now that it is out of my system I can move on with life. Hollywood is all about non-reality, but I never realized how non-real the non-reality is. I mean, how honored could you be to have your name on a star in front of a tattoo ... read more
