What's hot: Redwood Forests What's also hot: Scott gets a 392-point Scrabble play What's not: The temperatures--56 degrees at Eureka, CA The road: 101 miles of intense high mountain curves--Paul gets the driving prize. Travel lesson of the day: In search of beauty, you get some truth. from Kathy: The journey is the destination ... Advertising has ruined so many good phrases. This daily pursuit of new landscapes is a destination in itself, now at the halfway point for us. Inside our little bubble of four people, we carry out the rituals of lazy-rising, diner breakfasts, looking at the signs and people, noticing the little stuff, laughing or shaking our heads, or disagreeing, or putting up with each other, or agreeing, or just driving quietly ... read more

Day 5 After breakfast, Brian kicked my ass at Gin for awhile. It was a continuation of him kicking my ass at Cribbage. I thought sure I couuld beat him at my favorite game, but no luck. I'm into him for like 12.70 now (10 cents a point). Bob said if we gambled on the train, we had to give him half. But, we gave him a nice tip instead. You couldn't have asked for a better car attendent. He'd been a railroad man for 35 years. When Clinton did his train tour, Bob was on the car with the Clintons. He said there were two other "dummy trains" and helicopter gun ships flying above. Reminded me of the gunboats I've seen at Kennebunkport near the Bush estate when we went whale watching out of there. ... read more

Hi all, Wendy writing this one. Flight was crap, had lined up all the films we wanted to watch.... but the in flight system crashed, so was pretty boring. San Francisco is freezing, up to 30 degrees lower than a few miles inland. They do a booming trade in fleeces. I think they should rename the place Lycraville.... all the young and beautiful people (and the gays) run and cycle endlessly. There are no hippies anywhere I felt really scruffy and out of place. The whole place is like trendy bits of London, property prices are astronomical, $1000000 for a smallish terrace is the norm. We did all the stuff, Alcatraz, Golden Gate Bridge, hanging of a tram, wiggly Lombard Street. Big Red Fire Engine (for Kevin....Bless!) Had Clam Chowder in a sour dough bread on ... read more

So I never intended to start a travel blog. But I tell you: being on the road as much as I believe I will be leaves you lots of time to think. Does anyone else out there as your doing something start formulatin gin your head how you will relay this experience to others. Like what you will say, what parts you will omit, what parts you will stress. Anyways, call me crazy but sometimes my mind works like that. So anyways, here I am, its me, my moms old '96 Ford Taurus, my girlfriend T, a little bit of money, even less of a plan (go south through cali.), but a lot of heart people. We made the decision to stop into Eureka California, mostly due to the name. What a place though. Eureka ... read more

It's August 6th and the Travel Blog site has been down for a while. All of our previous blog entries were lost, however, I have recovered and re-published the last two of them. If you notice breaks in the text or photos, it's due to the restoration process. This next entry was to have been posted yesterday. Now that Travelblog is restored, here goes... 8/4 Here I sit in the misty pacific morning at Sonoma Coast State Beach pondering which highlights to give you. Since leaving Zion on July 29th, we’ve been through a lot of territory. On a personal note, although I’ve always been thankful for hot showers, I will say that waiting through 4 days of dusty hikes while slicked up with sunscreen, and up to 105 degree temps, with only baby wipes for ... read more

Left San Francisco aroun 9am and had a small panic for 5 mins whilst the SatNav decided whether or not it wanted to get a signal, amazingly it seems that I pointed the car in the right direction anyway and I was off. Another been there done that moment was achieved when driving across the Golden Gate Bridge, some stop off points for photo's are at either end so if you miss the first you can catch the second, then it was the long and winding Highway 1 for most of the 312 miles to Eureka. The views are spectacular, and again the amount of little towns you go through with just a shop and a post office is interesting, although some of these places are very cute and some of the houses that are ... read more

**FYI, LeAnne wrote the blog, & Natalie commentaried the pics... Hey EVERYONE! Yep, it's us again hollerin' from good ol' Eureka, California. A lot has happened since the last blog....let's see, that was 2 days ago. Well we will begin in Bend, Oregon. Natalie and I had spent a good two days there checking out the parks and visiting with Marja, my guiding buddy from Alaska. Our scheduled departure date would be that Saturday afternoon, an hour before my other buddy Julie would arrive in Bend. It just seemed right to stick around a little longer to visit with her too, so we decided to stay another night. I'm glad we did. The rest of the afternoon was spent catching up on journals and taking advantage of the free wi-fi at the local bakery. Along ... read more

. After the unexpectedly long driving day yesterday it was more than a little difficult to get up this morning! We looked out the window, saw the beautiful blue sky, said we need to get going and rolled over and snoozed… We finally got going and will remember Grants Pass as we seemed to miss every single traffic light in town and then the wait for the green light seemed unexpectedly long… Statistics Starting Destination: Grants Pass, Oregon Ending Destination: Eureka, California Ending Destination GPS: N: 40° 46.065’ W: 124° 11.529’ Elev: 23’ Miles Driven: 192 Distance Walked: 1 mile give or take a few trees Day’s best Coffee Shack Name: The Jitter Bean Coffee Company Getting to the Redwood Highway Our tour guide from Reedsport had indicated th... read more
