Happy New Year Everyone! Here is the link, again, to our holiday blog, this time with photos as the website fixed the issue: http://www.travelblog.org/fred.php?id=1081902 - Happy Holidays and 2023 Recap in Photos In this divided world we are living in, perhaps we could endeavor to make 2024 less decisive and more inclusive. Try to see the humanity in our fellow man instead of labeling him/them as ‘other.’ Try not to tolerate or perpetuate ethnic, racial or lifestyle discrimination in mind and deed. As Göran Persson wrote: “Let our New Year’s resolution be this: We will be there for one another as fellow members of humanity, in the finest sense of the word.” ... read more

After I broke my shoulder on 12 JUN 2023, I guesstimated that I should have enough time to heal and undergo my physical therapy before I had to fly to San Diego to begin the 2023 chapter of “The Great Adventure” on 8 OCT 2023. It turned out my last therapy session was two days before I departed. On the way to the airport, I managed to stop and help celebrate my niece’s 70thbirthday. It was nice to see her siblings, children, grandchildren and, yes, great-grandchildren. My friend, Gary, took me to the party on the way to the airport for my sixish flight to San Diego. After one night in San Diego, I boarded the MS Noordam on Sunday, October 8, 2023 for a 48-day cruise to four ports in Hawaii, seven ports in the ... read more

Day 25 - On our way to dinner last night, the two young people on the desk had been so helpful and chatty with us, we left them with a sachet of Vegemite each. Ange advised them on how to enjoy ? it and the guy was looking forward to it but the young lady was a bit apprehensive we think. They weren't on this morning when we left, would like to be a fly on the wall when they try it. Just a short ride into Page today, 100 k's, a quick stop at Glen Canyon Dam, then off to Horseshoe Bend again for some more pics. We headed off to our favorite Page restaurant State 48 Tavern which Jac & Snap found on our 2016 trip, however joy was short lived as the service, ... read more

Should I be disappointed that the miles per day are dropping off and today I did not cross a state border? Nah, it's what has happened along the way and how you feel at the end of the day that counts. The day started brilliantly with fresh squeezed orange juice and avocado toast. You gotta love Flagstaff. Poking around the hotel before I left I discovered that Michael Stripe had stayed there. He was the lead singer songwriter with REM and the voice behind Everybody Hurts, possibly my all time favorite song. I could not ask for more, until, recall yesterday I met Beth and Mel. Beth told me she was a big time AirBnB host. Today my buddy Rob, who is following the blog from where he lives in Tucson, texted me that he and ... read more

Today was the scariest ride I have ever had. Leaving Monticello I headed down route 95. I stopped at the tourist office in Blanding where a jovial and knowledgeable fellow was there to help. As soon as I speak folks ask me where I am from, when I say Virginia they look at me strangely which leads me to make an around the globe explanation. After I was done with that the jovial fellow said, “why bother with this, you have seen everything.” Nice guy. He set me off on a path I will not forget in a hurry. At first I was disappointed as I headed along 95 and down 261. If you were just plonked there you would go wow, but when you have been exposed to days and days of amazing scenery its ... read more

Day 4 - In the lead up to Memorial Day holiday, the traffic in the freeways is chaotic at best. An early start from Blythe to beat the heat & traffic, to no avail as we found later. A quick cruise around Blythe then onto I10 to Quartzsite, the home town of a guy I follow on You Tube, Russ from RVerTV. Just a sleep little gem mining town, so no stops and back onto I10 heading for Phoenix. I had the GPS set to Buddy Stubbs HD, which I thought was the store we visited in 2016. Arrived at destination and that was not where we had been, the dealership was closed, so a quick lunch then set the GPS again and was taken to a satellite store further north on the way to Flagstaff, ... read more

A few of years ago I started running on trails, thanks to my exposure to an iFIT trainer named Tommy Rivers Puzey via a NordicTrack treadmill my wife bought. I would run on the treadmill primarily through the winter, and hit the Metroparks trails in the warmer weather. One of the programs presented by this trainer was the 6 part Rim to River run in the Grand Canyon. I started to think, “hey, I could do this” and it wasn’t too long before I started training specifically for the Grand Canyon and eventually settled on the loop via south Kaibab to Bright Angel Trail and back to the south rim. So this Friday I head to Arizona and, around 5 Am on Saturday, I’ll start running down South Kaibab. I’ll blog my progress with pics and ... read more
