Day 4 - In the lead up to Memorial Day holiday, the traffic in the freeways is chaotic at best. An early start from Blythe to beat the heat & traffic, to no avail as we found later. A quick cruise around Blythe then onto I10 to Quartzsite, the home town of a guy I follow on You Tube, Russ from RVerTV. Just a sleep little gem mining town, so no stops and back onto I10 heading for Phoenix. I had the GPS set to Buddy Stubbs HD, which I thought was the store we visited in 2016. Arrived at destination and that was not where we had been, the dealership was closed, so a quick lunch then set the GPS again and was taken to a satellite store further north on the way to Flagstaff, plus we lost Norm when he turned right where I turned left. Set the GPS again and a quick 18 mile blat back to the correct HD dealership. Well done Pez.....oh well....into the shop and purchase the first t shirt for this trip. Back on the road again for our stop tonight in Casa Grande. The freeway around Phoenix is packed and slow with traffic
getting outta town for the weekend. So a very hot and windy ride down I10 again. Arrived at our hotel and looking for a cold drink and we think dinner is at Denny's again tonight.
Day 5 - Leaving Casa Grande we hit the Interstate headed for Tucson, traffic was a nightmare as it was the start of the Memorial Day long weekend, not as hot as yesterday but still warm enough. A quick stop for cold drink and morning tea then straight through to Benson AZ & arriving into Tombstone AZ around 12.30pm. Luckily we were able to check into our motel for the night, The Tombstone Motel, which was only a 3 minute walk to all the festivities of the day. We lucked out here....Memorial Day holiday and they integrated their Wyatt Earp Days festival this weekend. Now most of you know by now that my favorite places here are Deadwood & Prescott, but Tombstone gives them a good run for the money. Tombstone is a fantastic town, with Old Town the main attraction. The street closed to traffic, everyone was dressed in period costumes, street entertainers & of course, the obligatory gunfights every 20 minutes. What
a fabulous afternoon we had, as you will see by the photo's. Ange & I had a few drinks at a couple of local bars, then dinner at The Crystal Palace, followed by more nightcaps. Add 2 t shirts to the list and we had a great time in Tombstone. Hell....I even got hung!
Day 6 - Up early and headed to the Bisbee Breakfast Club for breakfast, 22 miles south of Tombstone. Another small historic town and a fantastic breakfast, couldn't finish the one serve of hotcakes which Ange & I shared. From there we rode to Lordsburg for lunch, Silver City, Hillsboro and into Truth or Consequences for the night. Now the highlight of today was the section from Silver City to Hillsboro, following NM152 or Geronimo Trail National Scenic Byway, what a great ride, this is a must do for any rider. Approximately 40 miles of twisty bits starting at the copper mine and heading up to over 6,600 feet through beautiful pine forests, nice and cool then down into the valley at Hillsboro. So all in all, two cracker days, one was a great social day getting involved in Wyatt Earp Days, and the next
a brilliant riding day from desert to mountain tops.
