Sitting at a Barns/Noble near Flagstaff Arizona. Got into the area this afternoon and signed up for three nights at a KOA campground....after about a month of campgrounds with pit toilets, no showers, or if you're lucky lukewarm pay showers with the button you gotta push every 8 seconds to keep it going....a KOA campground is like a luxury, toilets that swirl with water and take the waste away, unlimited hot shower water, electric and water at the site. Shannon says Ahhhhhh, and so do i. I told Shannon she could spoil herself....(it doesnt take much,,, ;) On the way here we stopped in Jerome AZ. An old copper mining town now supported by tourism, small town, mile high, window shopped and got a BBQ lunch. Someone told us to check it out, it was just ... read more

A quick note in case we don't have internet access for a bit. We have really enjoyed Sedona- so much so we're going on your for a week and plan to end up back here Thursday! We got to jam at a local drum session on top of Cathedral Rock under the full moon which was amazing, the hiking is endless. Jo has been enjoyig the new tripod - we have done some night hikes to watch the moon rise- the pictures are incredible and we'll hopefully get those on soon. Jordan rented a mtn bike again yesterday- he claims Jordan trail was his favorite, and not just for the name!! It's been fun to take in the local recommendations and not feel like tourists!! Next weekend is a mountain bike festival in town with lots ... read more

We are still here in Sedona and really enjoying exploring the area. Since the last update: One of our first days here we stopped into a local market by our campground and a girl gave us some "local" opinions on her favorite hikes in the area. Westfork she said was one of the most popular hikes so we figured we had to check that out! This would probably be voted Kona's favorite hike!! The hike is more like a walk into the canyons, with 13 river crossing and lots of swimming holes! The hike was 7miles in and out and we took our time playing in the water and trying to avoid the people traffic. The trail ends at a deep swimming hole where we ate a few snacks, took our shoes off and played a ... read more

We're in Sedona, Arizona This had been a must visit spot for us from the onset, good friends Chris/Sarah made sure we allotted to spend some time here. Very nice so far, we paid upfront for 5 nights at the campground and we'll be anteing up for more tomorrow. Much to do and the views / rocks / colors / and downtown is awesome. Our campsite is kind of down in a valley, minimal views from the campsite but we're minutes away from dramatic views and colorful red rocks, about 10 minutes north of town. Drastic temperature changes here. Night/AM lows are 29-30 degrees (ive been tracking with my cooking thermometer) and day time temps rise to about 85 and full sun. But it is dry and you dont have the sticky sweat accustom to a ... read more

Sedona ( /sɨˈdoʊnə/) is a city that straddles the county line between Coconino and Yavapai counties in the northern Verde Valley region of the U.S. state of Arizona. As of the 2010 census the population was 10,031. Sedona's main attraction is its stunning array of red sandstone formations, the Red Rocks of Sedona. The formations appear to glow in brilliant orange and red when illuminated by the rising or setting sun. The Red Rocks form a breathtaking backdrop for everything from spiritual pursuits to the hundreds of hiking and mountain biking trails. Sedona was named after Sedona Arabelle Miller Schnebly (1877–1950), the wife of Theodore Carlton Schnebly, the city's first postmaster, who was celebrated for her hospitality and industriousness. Sedona played host to more than sixty Hollywood productions from the first years of movies into the ... read more

On Monday we had our long drive day. We drove from Yucca Valley to Sedona Arizona. It took about 8 hours. You would think that we would be exhausted but when we arrived we knew something special was waiting for us. Our campsite (Cave Springs) was surrounded by oak and pine trees but abutted a 500 foot cliff of red and grey sandstone. This was just a taste of things to come. We decided to drive into Sedona (about 8 miles). Tiny Oak Creek has carved out one of the most beautiful places on earth. Sedona is surrounded by massive sandstone formations on all sides. They rise out of the desert and climb 2000 feet strait up. There is every shade of red that you can imagine but there are also greys and pinks. The sandstone ... read more

The transitition from the desert valley of Phoenix and Scottsdale to the mountains of Sedona is a beautiful and relaxing drive. Jane and I relished the cool mountain air. My parents love the dry desert heat and it is obvious from the number of people that live in the Phoenix area that many people love that climate. After spending summers in the mountains of North Carolina, we are hooked on the crisp, clean mountain air. Combine that climate with the scenic wonders of the west and you have the magical mountain town of Sedona. We had an excellent lunch at a little Mexican Cantina that nestled in one of the cutest shopping villages I have seen. Built along a creek shaded by huge sycamore trees, the many shoppes and walkways of the quaint development were picture ... read more

PHOTOS FROM THESE DAYS AT WEST FORK & FLAGSTAFF Not much to this day. We checked out early enough to make a last stop at West Fork on our way to Flagstaff. Then the rest of the day was walking around the town with my Olympus PEN camera. Our West Fork stop was short. We retraced some of the way I'd gone with Larry Lindahl, now so long ago. The structures found in photos 3 thru 7 are of what is left of a production crew's digs for the 1922 Zane Grey movie Call Of The Canyon ---er, I read something about a Mayhew's Lodge. The Reader can do the research if necessary. In any event, I heard a woman ask the party she was strolling with, "Is this an old Indian village?" I augmented the ... read more

PHOTOS FROM THIS DAY ON SUGARLOAF WITH TOM KELLY Our first time in Sedona was quickly coming to an end. This was our last official day. Tomorrow we were off to Flagstaff for the day, then flying out at 5:30am Tuesday. But this was Sunday, Tom Kelly's day off, and my day to take advantage of his generous offer --just how generous I would soon find out. Most of our morning was spent drying my boots, which is not an easy task considering that the Arizona air doesn't admit much moisture. Tom Kelly is the cheery photographer you'll find in the back space (with the expensive stuff) at Rollie's Camera on Main Street. He is a knowledgeable craftsman animated by a very giving spirit. Couple all of that with his love of hiking and you have ... read more

PHOTOS FROM THIS DAY AT THE CHURCH, BELL & CASTLE We didn't mind getting up early and getting there before it opened today because today we started at the Chapel of the Holy Cross. I just wanted some shots of what was around the structure more than what was in it. There were a few others there who either had the same idea or didn't yet know about Sedona's 8-o'clock rule. By the time we were heading back down to our car the attraction was officially open and the crowds were starting to gather. We moved south with a quick stop at Bell Rock --not a hike to, around, on or up it, just a quick we-were-there shot and we were moving southwest again. This time to Montezuma's Castle.... read more
