Geo: 34.8408, -111.776DH was just beginning to accept that the Birthday Tour was over and the Killer B's had indeed left us and gone home, and she was stuck with me for her daily entertainment and warm hugs. Apparently that prospect left her a little down in the dumps so she was in desperate need of a cosmic, spiritual, or psychic boost. Sedona, Arizona is a city of outstanding natural beauty, famous for its red sandstone rock formations - buttes, blue skies, and canyons, and more importantly it's also home to "vortexes"- mysterious areas of concentrated energy to which seekers of enlightenment are drawn. But before strapping on her tinfoil meditation hat, DH wanted to stand at a street corner in Winslow Arizona in order to channel her inner 70's rock n roll chick. She leaned up ... read more

Geo: 34.8408, -111.776 So we left on Thursday morning for a lesurely drive to Tonapah, Nev. We went into Yosemite and up thru Tioga Pass. It was a nice drive. Then into Nevada. What a desolate place! There is nothing out there but desert brush. no trees, no animals, nothing. We arrived in Tonapah and went to our hotel, which is the Mitzpah Hotel. It was pretty cool. It was opened in 1901. It has been restored and the rooms modernized. We liked it. The first thing we did was have a drink at the Bar Mitzpah. The next morning we got up early and headed thru the rest of Nevada and into Arizona. Its much nicer there, especially th closer you get to Sedona. We went into town for some dinner and to listen to ... read more

It stormed overnight in Amarillo, saving R the labor of scrubbing the windshield to clear it of bug splatter. Cheryl, my friend from Stubbs Elem. in Lubbock,TX stopped at the hotel in the morning for 20 mins. before going in to sub for a teacher for 4 weeks. It was great to see her and catch up on family doings. She told me that Stubbs is closed now! We set off 20 mins past our set departure time at a cool 55 degree F in contrast to 99 yesterday and 78 at sundown. Destination: Sedona, AZ. In the mid 80s R hiked down to Phantom Ranch in the Grand Canyon across the Colorado River with a couple of his buddies from Texas Tech Univ. At that time they visited Sedona, and R fell in love with the ... read more

Elles se ... read more

From Billy the Kid to Wyatt Earp, General Custer to Geronimo, the American West was filled with legendary characters. Novelists and short story writers blended fact and fiction to create bigger than life characters and made them famous in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. Thousands of young and old readers living on the East Coast of the United States followed the stories of the daring men and women who tamed a frontier seemingly filled with danger and adventure around every corner. The cattle ranches were immense, the women were beautiful and the native people were both respected for their traditions and feared for their warrior-like aggression. According to the writers, the men who settled the west had to be brave, strong, wise and probably quick with a gun. They walked a little taller and talked ... read more

( ... read more

In 2012 Margo and I spent a month at Sedona, a beautiful small town in north central Arizona. Blessed with an incomparable setting surrounded by red rocks and mountains, it’s an artist’s paradise, with energy vortices that impart a feeling of spirituality, serenity, and healing. All buildings are by law examples only of south-western architecture and colour. Street art abounds, most of it tasteful with western themes, and there are no parking meters!! There are dozens of galleries catering to the full range of tastes, from visitors seeking inexpensive souvenirs, to quality Indian handicrafts, all the way to world-class sculptures and paintings for the most discriminating collectors (no cameras allowed in those galleries!). It even incorporates within its boundaries “Tlaquepaque”, a unique very tasteful arts and crafts urban village with a pseudo-Mexican theme. While the Upto ... read more

A ride on the Verde Canyon Railroad is a step back in history as the train ambles along following the Verde River through Arizona's other "grand canyon". We rode in an enclosed air conditioned car, but it did struggle to maintain a comfortable temp. in the 100 degree temperatures. We had access to an open but covered car for seeing the view. Wildlife spotted on this trip was deer, blue heron, and an eagle. Drove back to Sedona to eat at a restaurant recommended by our daughter and son-in-law. The Javelina Cantina served excellent food and had a great view from the dining room.... read more

HAPPY FOURTH OF JULY!!!! Headed back north of Camp Verde today to do some hiking in Red Rock State Park. Started early when temperature was in high 70's because temps. have been up to 100+ the last few days. We started with the Kisva Trail followed by a portion of Eagle's Nest, Coyote Ridge, and Smoke Trail. Barbara and I enjoy riding forestry roads looking for wildlife, so I picked up a forestry road map and went exploring. Did not have much luck spotting any wildlife, and decided it might be due to the heat. We rode forestry roads from Red Rock to Montezuma Castle near Camp Verde, about 35 miles. Montezuma Castle is said to be the best preserved cliff dwelling in America. Built in a natural recess of a limestone cliff some 100 ft. ... read more

One more day and we’ll start our long drive home. On the way we’ll see Monument Valley and Arches National Park. That part will be fun, but all the driving in between….Yuck! We have settled into a nice routine here. I am up early and out for a walk and latte by 7:30am every morning. Others in the house seem to like to sleep longer. The Oak Creek Fire continues to burn. The fire teams have cut and burned areas surrounding the fire and need to wait until the main fire burns up to those stop points. Sort of lighting a fire to stop a fire. The strategy should prove out, one way or another, during this coming week. In the meantime the smoke is filling the valley and smells awful. On Saturday my friend and ... read more
