We still had two tickets to try to sell before the green bus left at 12:30 today. We left for the park about 11:00 loaded with snacks, water, cameras and dogs. And the bus tickets. We pulled into the bus depot parking lot and began scanning for possible buyers. We saw one guy getting out of his car so Dave parked the truck and he and Mike took both tickets and approached him. Teri and I reminded them to tell him the park entrance fee was included and we just didn't need two days of the same trip, hoping that would encourage the man to buy them. They approached him looking like two men unsure of how to score drugs, talked with him a while then came back to the truck, both tickets still in hand. ... read more

Not a good way to start the day. I used the park's bathroom this morning instead of our to conserve tank space. I reached for the toilet paper and it was empty! It was one of those big round dispensers that held four rolls and EVERY ONE OF THEM WAS EMPTY! I sent an emergency text to Mike who brought me the roll from our bathroom. Whew! sometimes it pays to always have your phone with you. Today we had tickets for the green Denali Transit bus at noon. Dogs were not allowed on the bus so we made them comfortable and set a time limit for ourselves so the pups wouldn't be left alone too long. We left earlier than we had planned because one of the other campers, a man from Texas, told Dave ... read more

Woke to an overcast day. We'd been warned about the constantly changing weather around here. On the docket today was driving into Denali National Park and catching a glimpse of The Great One. No, not Wayne Gretzky. Denali, formerly known as Mount McKinley. Our method was a self-guided Jeep tour of Denali National Park. We went with the self-guided tour because it was much cheaper than the guided tour and we wouldn't be limited to the guide's predetermined route. A guidebook of suggested routes was included in the rental. It had short descriptions of the routes and information of the area. We met James, our rental delivery man, in the parking lot of one of the many lodging complexes near the entrance to Denali National Park. Our mode of transport for the next four hours would ... read more

Because of all the fun with RV repairs yesterday we weren't able to squeeze in the Fairbanks Ice Museum so we decided to do it on the way to Cantwell today. The drive to Cantwell would be a short one giving us plenty of time to tour the museum. The only trouble we would run into is where to park our behemoths. Teri again to the rescue. She called the museum and asked if their parking lot would be big enough. Turns out they didn't even have a parking lot. The person on the other end of the line (is that still correct when you're using a cell phone?) said the Morris Thompson Cultural Center a few blocks away had RV parking. Problem solved! We left our dogs in the trailers with snacks, water and the ... read more

On the list of activities today was a lazy morning, The Santa Claus House, The Home Depot for plumbing repair pieces, a trip to Walmart for provisions, the Fairbanks Ice Museum and twilight golf with the sun still high in the sky. Mike took another look at the water leak we'd sprung and couldn't figure out the true source. Each time he thought he'd found it he'd been proven wrong with wetness when he went back later to check it. He happened to see a mobile RV repairman working on a rig nearby and asked if he might have time to take a look when he'd finished. When Paul, the repairman, came to see about our problem he checked all the pipes and connections and could find no holes or loose fittings. He finally asked what ... read more

For the last few month I have been working on a cruise ship up in Alaska. While we do have a busy schedule, once in a while we have to opportunity to join one of the ships excursions. Alaska is all about nature and wildlife, so when docked in Alaskas capital of Juneau I decided to join a whale watching trip. Also you never know what you will encounter on these trips, we were in for a big suprise. While walking down to the boat we asked the group who just got back from their trip if they have seen any whales this morning, but all they said was that they were told not to say anything. Which was odd, but this also indicated that there was something special out there. First we thought they have ... read more

Can we just be able to hook up and go without running into some sort of delay? This morning Mike discovered water in the basement well where we store our Legos (leveling blocks) and wheel chocks. The well has a plastic tub liner and everything stored there is plastic or rubber so there was no danger of anything being damaged. He mopped up the water and traced the water and drain lines to find the source. Once he had an idea of where the water was coming from he formulated a plan for when we got set at our next destination. Originally, we were supposed to drive to Cantwell today which is about 25 minutes beyond Denali National Park. The plan was to drive back to Fairbanks to do the activity we had planned there: golf. ... read more

We'd not even gotten out he road before we had to stop. On the way out of the campground Mike looked in his mirror and saw the dining room slide partially extended. He'd forgotten to putt it back in after using the bathroom! To continue our trek to Alaska we needed to cross the Yukon River. There is no bridge over the River Y at the end of Front Street in Dawson City. I'm guessing it may have something to do with that pesky permafrost. In order to get to the other side, you have to take the George Black Ferry. This ferry is no ordinary boat. It has a flat hull designed to float atop the shallow waters of the Yukon. It connects Dawson City with the Top of the World Highway which leads to ... read more

Anne and I traveled to Glacier Bay National Park in Alaska in mid July for a week-long cruise aboard the MV Sea Wolf. The Sea Wolf is a converted US Navy minesweeper that protected San Francisco harbor during WWII. Originally built in 1941, she was commissioned as the USS Observer (Amc-91). She was decommissioned in 1947, then through several different owners, was purchased in 2003 by the current owners. Thoroughly remodeled in 2003 and again in 2019, she is now the current small ship cruise host for up to 12 passengers and a crew of 5 or 6. This trip has been on my bucket list ever since our trip to Glacier Bay NP back in 2015. I finally convinced Anne, or wore her down sufficiently to agree, that we should do it before we are ... read more

Wednesday 26th, Thursday 27th, Friday 28th April 2023 He certainly made the right call not to go to Kushiro!! There was a storm forecast for that area and we were just going to skirt around the edge of it! It was a wild night!! All balcony doors were locked, the storm wind whistling all night, gale force 11, and angry seas with 25ft waves! This lasted all night and all the next day and made moving around the ship quite difficult (the ship has excellent stabilisers!!) Then on the Friday we woke up to blue sky, blue sea and sun! The wind was still quite strong and there were white horses on the sea but a definite improvement. So far the clocks have been/going forward by 1hr a night which means a total of 3 hrs ... read more
