Cruise West Alaska Tour - 24/07/08 to 16/08/08 Misty Fjords National Park The route took us overnight along Behm Canal to Rudyerd Bay in Misty Fjords National Park. Two Rangers had been picked up at about 5.30 am. We woke to the magnificent scenery of the fjord. There was no glacier at the head of the fjord but the scenery was reflected in the still waters. Pine trees grow on the steep rocky sides of the fjord but occasionally one falls and the interlocking roots pull the neighbouring trees down too. Alders are the first trees to regrow in the open space because they can fix nitrogen and make it possible for other trees to grow. The water here was 73 m deep. The fjords still show some scrape marks from the glaciers. The glaciation was ... read more

That afternoon at the American Summit we enjoyed a boxed lunch and then continued to Eagle, Alaska's first city now a village of about two hundred. Homer, Seldovia and Seward After a flight from LA via Dallas to Anchorage we were excited at seeing Rich’s Mum and Ian. Pat and Ian made it all the way out to Alaska for a three week holiday of their own that would start by meeting us in Alaska. Their flight had landed the day before ours but when we arrived at the airport they were nowhere to be seen. We were both really surprised as knowing Pat as we do thought she would have been waiting there for ages already. After hanging around a while we heard a squeal from a mother missing her son and turned around to see Pat who hugged us both. It turned out that our flight times had changed while we had been away and she had our original itinerary. ... read more

LEAVING SAN MIGUEL This is not our normal travelblog but more of a newsletter to let family and friends know what's happening in our life. So if you are looking for travel tips you won't find much of that in this blog. We spent April doing some construction/renovation on our rental house; building up a wall, plastering and painting. We improved the look of the front and gave the roof a more “finished” look. We are so thankful for our friends Trish and Bliss. They build houses (very nice ones) and lent us their crew, expertise and advice, making everything much easier for us. But as usual when doing renovation problems surfaced. The first headache was getting the work permit from the city. Since our house is historic (over 200 years old) and in the ... read more

Alaska truly is one of the greatest adventure spots of the U.S. My son Matt and I decided to meet in Anchorage for a father/son week of adventure and a visit with my good friends Tom and Cinda Devine. Matt flew in from Tennessee and I arrived from southern China. Leaving the densely populated territory of southern China to the wilderness of Alaska for a week of solitude was quite a change not only in climate , but for population as well. China has 351 people per sq. mile and Alaska has 1.2. The week turned out to be better than we ever expected. My friends Tom & Cinda live just outside of Anchorage in Chugiak in a beautiful log home with their three girls. Their gear shack became our guest room and home base for ... read more

Alaska is the thing of the past, to us anyways. We are officially "on the way home". We don't have a lot of time to write this blog so maybe I will try to hit some of the highlights. the one that got away We went fishing in Haines the afternoon before we boarded the inside passage ferry. It was really fun. Jesse hooked a big halibut but after the captain got out the harpoon (that's right we were going to have to harpoon this baby to get it in the boat), it ran away with the bait and our hopes of a huge fish to bring home to our families. We did catch a few Cod, Flounder and one other small Halibut that was really good eating for dinner that night. Yum. Lots of bear ... read more

Thursday August 21 - Saturday August 23 - 08 During the day at Denali the clouds had gathered and as the train pulled away from the station it started to rain but a few miles down the track the sun was out all the way to Fairbanks. Friday morning we went on our own to the Museum of the North at the University of Alaska, Fairbanks. The museum is world class with various exhibits of the First Nation People, the gold rush era, native animals and modern art. That afternoon our tour included a cruise aboard the sternwheeler Discovery Experience on the historic Chena and Tanana Rivers. Along the way we stopped at Trail Breaker Kennels, the home of the late Susan Butcher, the first female winner of the Ididarod. We then proceeded to the Chena ... read more

Tuesday August 19 - Thursday August 21 After a short ride to the Railroad Depot we boarded the luxurious McKinley Explorer for the 8-hour trip to Denali. The weather Gods are with us! The sun is warm and with only a few clouds we have fantastic views of Mt. McKinley starting from 200 miles away as we take in the spectacular scenery along the rails. A plane flight later in the day brings Sylvan to within a half mile of the majestic peak. The next day we were up at five am to meet the bus that took us on the 8-hour round trip bus tour through Denali Park. There is only one road and travel is limited to 30 buses a day operated by the National Park Service. You can hike and backpack almost anywhere ... read more
