Friday July 20, 2007 When I woke up and looked out at the inlet, I noticed the morning mists across the channel were unusual so I snapped some photos. We headed into Valdez fairly early. Got info at the Visitor’s center and did grocery shopping. The grocery store people were some of the friendliest I’ve come across. We checked out the salmon spawning area the Forestry Dept set up. Several salmon were in the creek, but they are just starting.to arrive here. After lunch we drove a back road that led to a hiking trail. The dirt road was bumpy, but we stuck with it until we got to a creek washout. Then we parked CT and walked a few miles through the Mineral Creek Valley, which was nice. It was partly sunny and the ... read more

Thursday July 19, 2007 Another sunny day! We continued north on the Alaska Hwy and back into the USA. Eventually our route took us southwest and the 2 different roads we traveled were basically in the same condition as the Alaska Hwy. Traffic increased a little. Towns, villages and services are about 100-150 miles apart and there is nothing in between. The scenery was the same as yesterday, but when we headed SW, snowcapped mountains came into view and there were more lakes and rushing rivers. The day warmed up, probably into the high 70’s and we actually needed the ac in the truck cab. There are so many bugs, you really don’t want to open the windows. About 50 miles outside of Valdez the landscape changed dramatically. The road passed tall mountains and the ... read more

Wednesday July 18, 2007 Wednesday morning we left Haines (drizzling and foggy) and Southeast Alaska behind and headed toward Valdez. The further we got from Haines, the sunnier and warmer it became. We arrived in Haines by ferry and we were leaving on wheels. The Haines Hwy meets the famous Alaska Hwy about 150 miles from Haines. The Alaska Hwy or Alcan goes through British Columbia and the Yukon and then into Alaska. In BC the landscape was vast with mountains, huge lakes and wildflowers everywhere. There was no traffic going in our direction. We passed one truck in about 3 hours. There was traffic going the opposite direction. We saw a grizzly bear on a gravel bar off the road. About 4 hours into the trip the road conditions deteriorated, which is normal for ... read more

Valdez, AK pop. 4,454 We had heard that this was a scenic area and wanted to see for ourselves. It’s not on the way to anywhere else, but was worth the drive. The last 60 miles leading into Valdez were spectacular with glaciers, mountains, canyons and waterfalls. We camped at Glacier View Campground for $10/night dry camping. This campground was shared with black bears, including some cubs. We never actually saw them, but they were the talk of the park. Apparently one large bear would make the rounds every morning and circle each vehicle or camper. One truck got a good shaking by the bear trying to get something inside. One cooler was dragged off into the woods. Alaskans do seem to be much more relaxed about sharing their space with wildlife than us “outsiders.” ... read more

June 20th: Richardson highway to Wrangell NP. Richardson Highway: Our first stop was not too far from Fairbanks. 20 miles away is North Pole where it is Christmas everyday at "Santa Claus Haus". We were so glad we could meet Santa & actually talk to him. He was very friendly. We thought we had to wait in line for a handshake. This was so cool. This part of the highway was so hot & dry that we found it difficult to imagine how it would be in winter. The Trans Alaska pipeline curved its way in & out of the highway. We stopped a lot for photo opportunities. Our night halt was at Golden Spruce Cabins. It is a little expensive place, but totally worth the price. There is pretty much no one or nothing ... read more

Another update from our intrepid travellers in Alaska. The three of them are all well and in great sprits in Valdez in the south of the state. When I recieved the email they had just finsihed a 6 hour wildlife and glacier cruise. "Was wonderful, wtih black and white dolphins, humpback whales, seals and sea otters all around. The Colombia glacier was great but is melting at half a kilometer per year and so has shrunk 10km in 20 years". They were packing to head off into the wilds for two nights of hiking and camping and had already seen bears, moose, fozxes, mink etc on the way to Valdez... no doubt we will hear how that went in a few days time. Cheers Jacqui. ... read more

We are off to Whittler to catch the ferry to Valdez. WoW another absolutely awesome drive and now on the Marine Highway cruizin the waterways of Prince William Sound. We could be on a Manly Ferry except that: we are going faster, there are way less people, no cars or buildings in sight and snow capped mountains all around and come down to the shore line. The road to Whittler took us back past the 7 glaciers resort of Alyeska. So we took a detour to check what it looked like on a clear sunny Alaskan morning.... more wow...We would love to spend some more time here but need to drive to get to Whitter by 11.30 to book into the ferry. We stopped at the Jade Factory (which was closed when we were in ... read more

Valdez sits in a narrow valley surrounded by rugged coastal mountains at the end of an arm of Prince William Sound. It was founded in the 1890’s and prospered as a landing spot and outfitter for gold prospectors heading to Fairbanks and the Klondike gold fields. Today it is a thriving port, commercial and sports fishing center, and the southern terminus of the Alaska Pipeline. It is a beautiful place, surrounded by snow-covered mountains with sheer cliffs dropping straight into the sea, but Valdez is best known for two catastrophic events. At 5:36PM on March 28, 1964 (Good Friday), a 9.2 earthquake, the second largest ever recorded anywhere, struck about 55 miles west of Valdez, AK. The quake resulted in Tsunamis that killed 16 people in Oregon and California and caused sloshing in swimming pools as ... read more

All vehicle traffic into Alaska must go through Tok (rhymes with broke), the first town you come to on the Alaska Highway. Here we turned south, and soon the road improved and we saw our second moose. We overnighted in Glenallen, a tiny crossroads town about 100 miles or so from Valdez. We were very surprised to find we had cell phone service and could access the internet on the Verizon Air Card. That's better than we sometimes get in Fernandina Beach. As we neared Valdez we came upon our first glacier, Worthington Glacier. There was an observation area and parking lot about 1/4 mile from base of the glacier. You could walk right up to it and touch it. Cool. Soon after that the road passed through a river canyon with steep rock walls and ... read more
