SEPTEMBER 1 TUESDAY MONDAY … we drove from glennallen to valdez … it’s not that far by alaskan standards … perhaps a little over a hundred miles … the road is known as the richardson highway and was the main road on the all american route to the klondike … it is spectacular … about 10 miles out of glenallen we stopped at the st. elias-wrangel national park visitors center … st. elias-wrangel is 4 times larger than is yellowstone … it is by far the largest national park in the u.s. and it contains the largest contingent of glaciers in continental north america, and, if I remember correctly, 11 of the 15 tallest mountains in north america … it is essentially an all wilderness park with only two gravel roads … the visitor center was ... read more

After another shopping spree at Wal-Mart in Wasilla, the four of us set out for Glennallen, Ak. From there we part ways for a couple of days. Leta and Shelby will continue east to Tok, and Barbara and I will turn south for Valdez, Ak. I wanted to do some salmon fishing and Shelby decided he was not that interested, plus Leta had a date with a chain-saw carver to make her a bear. Barbara and I stayed at the Bear Paw Campground directly at the mouth of the small boat harbor, and Lowes River. It was one of the nicest and most reasonably priced campgrounds in Alaska. I went to town and booked a Silver Salmon fishing for the next day. Heard they were about 12 miles out where Port of Valdez joins Prince ... read more

THIS WAS THE MOST AMAZING DAY!!!!! It rained all night and in the morning there was thick fog. We went out to look around the town as the fog lifted. We looked at the large, newer homes and at the boats in the marina. We guessed that the pipeline workers were well-paid. Across the bay, we could see the end of the Trans-Alaskan Pipeline and the huge storage tanks for the oil. Using the Milepost for a guide, we drove out to Dayville Road where it said we might see seals, sea lions, sea otters, birds, and maybe bears. There was a salmon fish hatchery there, too. We parked and saw that there were barricades by the creek that said bears had been sighted in the area and to be watchful. There weren't any bears, but ... read more

Geo: 61.1308, -146.348 Friday, 7/30/2010 –Drove to Valdez (pronounced VALDEEZE) by retracing the drive along the Tok cutoff and then took the Richardson Highway south of Glennallen. Stopped at the main Wrangell-St. Elias Visitor Center near Copper Center and hiked a short trail there while waiting for it to open at 9:00. Saw the park movie and talked a bit with a very nice and informative ranger there, then drove on to Copper Center where we purchased a couple of wraps at a place called “The Fisherman's Widow” for lunch later that day . Anne got a small one with veggie stuff (humus, veggies, etc.) and I got a Bacon Ranch Chicken wrap. Both were huge and delicious. I had gotten a large one and could only eat half for lunch. (Unfortunately, I left the other ... read more

We left the campers in Glennallen and took Magee's van to Valdez. The first half of the drive gave a better view of the tops of several high mountains that couldn't see yesterday due to clouds. Mt Drum is really BIG with a bunch of glaciers and at 12010 ft, it towers over every other thing in sight, even Mt Wrangell several miles SE of it and a couple thousand feet higher. When we got to the Chugach mountains, we stated seeing snow fields, and a few glaciers. Then we got to Worthington glacier. The State has a state park there with interpretive signs, a ranger station and paved walks to get you pretty close to the glacier. The trails up to the glacier were closed (still snow covered). Got a couple good pictures of Charlie ... read more

We all got in the van (Moe, too) and headed south on Highway 4, Richardson Highway. The skies were pretty clear and we stopped at a couple of overlooks to get pictures of the top of Mt. Drum, which we couldn't see yesterday for the clouds. Later, the beautiful snow-covered Chugach Mountains came into view with their many glaciers. We stopped at Worthington Glacier SP to walk fairly close to a glacier. We really did get a kick out of seeing a glacier up close. The funny thing was, there were seagulls swimming in the cold waters of the glacial pond, between the sheets of ice. After crossing Thompson Pass, there was a pulloff with a spectacular 360 degree view of the surrounding mountains and glaciers. It was awesome. We then drove through Keystone Canyon with ... read more

Valdez, approx. population 5,000, sits at the mouth of Prince William Sound and is home to the Alyeska Marine Terminal, where oil from Prudhoe Bay travels nearly 800 miles through the TransAlaska Oil Pipe Line and is loaded onto tankers—over a million barrels each day. The bay is surprisingly ice-free, but Valdez is billed as the snow capital of Alaska due to its record accumulations. The town, across the bay from the Marine Terminal, is surrounded by glacier-studded mountains which rise straight up from the water to about 7,000 feet. Waterfalls spill down the mountain sides, and clouds descend below the jagged peaks. While the town itself is rather ho-hum, the scenery surrounding it is quite lovely. The town of Valdez was actually moved from its original location after a massive 9.2 earthquake in 1964—the largest ... read more

Alaska truly is a beautiful place . The driving has been surprisingly easy although it is slow . The permafrost makes for some waviness in the roadbed and the RV rattles as we roll along. About that , we booked a 22ft Class C without a generator and were upgraded to a 24ft with a generator ... which we have not had reason to use so far. It has 3 beds and the roomette at the back is mine . Although it is the coolest it suits me fine. We are really enjoying this way of travelling. Stopping for lunch or even to sleep has been so easy . 2 nights ago we pulled into a State campground with 12 sites and were there with only the Ranger. It is good to stop when we are ... read more
