We started the day up in the Lido: Fried eggs and bangers for me and French Toast for Sharon. This will be Sharon’s third visit to Glacier Bay, involving a day of scenic cruising in this Ranger hosted maritime visit to the large national park; and, for her it looks like the third time is the charm. Her previous visits here, including one with me two years ago, have been plagued by fog and inclement weather. I checked on the way back to our cabin after breakfast; but, was correct in my suspicion that no Sudoku puzzles were available in the library. Sharon went out on the Lower Promenade to take pictures where I briefly joined her before returning to the cabin to add an additional layer and the fetch the binoculars. The wind was up ... read more

Sunday, August 14th, 2016 Day 12: Glacier Bay, Alaska – Too cold to stay outside! Today, we are cruising along Glacier Bay, a vast area of southeast Alaska’s Inside Passage. It is a protected national park known for its wildlife and glaciers. It is here where you can witness a glacier calving, where chunks of ice break of the glacier and go into the water. We stared at the Glacier for about half an hour, waiting for it to calve. After a while, Renata and I decided it was time to go inside. It was cold outside and it was getting slightly boring just staring at an enormous block of ice. Instead we went to a towel folding and floral design demonstration on the ship. We also played more scrabble as we watched Glacier Bay from ... read more

Glacier Bay 30 July 2016 We all woke excited to see out our window, ice floating in the water and then we saw the amazing site of John Hopkins Glacier, Margerie Glacier and the massive Grand Pacific Glacier. The ship went up close to the latter and stayed for over an hour. This gave us plenty of time to gaze at it, seeing puffin birds, sea lions, seagulls and large sheets of ice crashing off the end of the glacier. The day was beautiful. The sky was clear blue reflecting through the ice and onto the water. It was majestic and the reason for coming to Alaska. We had Glacier Bay Rangers on board the ship who constantly made announcements providing information on glacial in general as well as the whole of Glacier Bay. One of ... read more

This morning we arrived in Glacier Bay National Park. Alas, the excellent weather we have enjoyed the past few days has turned to low clouds and mist/light showers. This is a location where scenery is the cornerstone of the day, and sadly we do not have the best possible viewing conditions. But we made do as best we could. We got up at 7:00 and called Kathy and Jim. We all agreed to meet down in the Portofino Dining Room for a formal breakfast. We all got there about 7:45 and had a nice breakfast. Janet was able to order the Eggs Benedict even though it wasn’t on the menu. David had an Omelet and Blueberry Pancakes. Jim had bacon & eggs while Kathy had poached eggs on toast and blueberry pancakes. It was delicious and ... read more

Photos from Glacier Bay We were still at sea this whole day. In fact, it wouldn’t be until the next day we would dock for the first time since we left Whittier. Glacier Bay National Park is much bigger than Hubbard Glacier even from the water, but the visibility was barely better, so it was hard to compare. Again, since this blog is supposed to be about the photos, this will be another short entry. Although Glacier Bay was bigger, our approach to it was much the same as it was at Hubbard. The ship moves in and slowly circles, which means that a tripod wouldn’t have helped with long exposures because we moved ever so slightly. It’s like trying to take a long exposure of the moon. It Moves. In Glacier Bay the boat just ... read more

Rain Day One of our pre-planned splurges was a day cruise from the park to Glacier Bay. Because seal pups were not weaned yet, the John Hopkins Inlet, the left far and magnificent bay, was closed to boat traffic. We would only be able to enter the Tarr Inlet and see the Marjorie and Grand Pacific Glaciers. The first day was drizzling so we delayed taking the trip and spent a rain day in the lodge. This was my chance to catch up on postcards and blogging. There was no phone service and very slow internet, shared by all us web-dependent fools converged in the lobby. But they did have electrical outlets, a convenience I exploited at every chance throughout our journey. Early in the morning on the way to the lodge, we barely recognized the ... read more

On the ferry ride to Gustavus (Gus-TAY-vus), we went to the Observation seating area and with some foreboding, found the only remaining spot was to the left, near a large and loud family, next to the children’s play area. Across from us in the center were two men among many others, the one closest we soon learned was Steve, a very gregarious retired Yellowstone Ranger. He and his very amiable brother-in-law Dan struck up a conversation with us and become extremely excited when Terry told them he was the former longtime chef at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club. Steve, it turns out, is a fanatical golfer, with a nearly completed goal of playing the best public course in each state. Playing at a private course like Shinnecock was the next level of dreams. A very lengthy and ... read more

We’re still getting used to being awaken by light creeping in to our balcony view before five. Initially it purports to be a fine day for glacier scenic viewing, overcast some but good visibility. Sharon tried to post the two blogs to the internet; but, was unable to connect with the room WIFI. It seems to be rejecting her username and after being unable to get her hot-spot up yesterday after tour I think she’s becoming a bit irritated. We’re not talking meltdown here; but, Sharon doesn’t like it when things don’t work when they’re supposed to (or when people don’t do things that they’re supposed to). She has all of these rules for me about playing racquetball: Don’t get hurt, Don’t fall down, Don’t hurt anybody else… You get the idea. If I followed her ... read more

Early morning entry into Glacier Bay, 6.00a.m. very foggy and not able to see much of the mountain tops, but within two hours WOW! Glacier Bay have you turned on the beautiful weather, sunny and crisp! Just amazing cruising up the passage with icebergs bobbing up and down beside the ship. Such an eerie feeling, such wilderness and no civilisation for miles around. Saw some amazing glaciers here, all different, Margerie Glacier 1 mile wide and at least 200ft high and we actually saw some carving happening, lots of small ones but just before we turned around to leave a huge one went down - this happens all the time on the face of the glaciers. Cruised by at least 4 different glaciers, and stopping for one hour in front of one, and by mid afternoon ... read more

Another day at sea. Can navigate around the ship better now. We are in glacier bay today - special part of the cruise. Must be - went back to the crows nest for our preferred seats but all taken early. Get a reasonable first tier seat and settle back to the sights. Eventually get to the exciting parts where the glaciers are to be seen. All of a sudden seats become more and more - people have moved to the outer decks and the bow for better sights. When in Alaska do as the others do so down we go as well. Great viewing and eventually we find a quiet corner where we can view and not be climbed over.... Glacier behaves as expected and starts to calve. We have great viewing and get some good ... read more
