I arrived on a Tuesday, (I count as day 0), lacking internet, a communication tool that my life has become heavily reliant upon. Yesterday I finally gave in a jumped on the 15 minute 20 peso colectivo headed south to the magnificant town of Tulum, famous for its ruinas that bear the same name. The town is cute, busy, has good food, drinks and free wi-fi. There I found el rincon poblano, a cafe that deserves much more credit that any travel guide has given it. In fact, I have yet to see it mentioned in any guides. I left there at 9 PM only to be dropped off at the side of Hwy. 307 which connects to the main road where I am staying. The worst part, the main road where I am staying is ... read more

When we made plans off to Mexico. After say, 3+ years of not travelling outside Canada. We made a conscious effort to do some Scuba Diving as part of the trip. We hardly knew where Akumal was on the map or how it compared to famous destinations like Cancun, Puerto Vallarta and the likes. All we cared about is its cheap and this will give us an opportunity to see Chichen Itza. Apparently “Akumal” is a Mayan word that translates to “Place of the turtles”. To our surprise, it was only after we arrived that a few locals told us that the place is a huge nesting are for Sea Turtle. Imagine that… But before I get to enjoy this activity, I had to undergo a certification course which was nerve racking. As easy as it ... read more

Woke up this morning a little later than any other morning this trip. This how it generally happens, I get up at the crack of dawn everyday but our travel home day. I guess I am just too wiped out from all our activities and too bummed out that I have to go home. Our flight leaves out of Cancun at 2:30pm so we need to be out of the condo and on the road by 10:30am in order to have plenty of time to drop the rental car off and get some lunch at the airport. We packed up all our stuff, a little less care going into it now that we are leaving, emptied the fridge...our lucky neighbors got the remaining cervezas and Javier got a nice bottle of Spanish Red Wine and off ... read more

Woke up this morning to another beautiful sunrise. It was going to a great last day in paradise! Today's the day that we finally get back to Tulum to tour the ruins again, but this time we're hiring a guide. We went last year in the later part of the morning without a guide and it was really a waste. Too many people(many of which were very rude) and no understanding of what the significance of various buildings were. So, time to wake the guys and get ourselves together for our Tulum adventure. We hit the road heading south around 8:00ish, not as early as I had wanted but for the guys it was early enough! We found the parking lot which cost 40 pesos and started off towards the ruins. On the way, right by ... read more

We were up early this morning as we needed to meet up at Cueva Del Pescador to go out fishing. It has been one of my "bucket list" items for a couple years to go out on a panga boat in the Carribean...and today is the day! Also, this was an excellent opportunity for Aidan and Sean to finally go fishing on one of our trips. We have often talked about going out but never had the guts to do it! For those of you who aren't familiar with what a panga boat is, these are boats that you see up and down the Mexican coast usually with white bottoms and colorful trim. They aren't large boats and aren't what you would take out on a commercial fishing trip in the States. I made a bigger ... read more

So, the plan was to head down to Tulum for the day. Last year we toured the ruins without hiring a guide and really didn't get much out of the experience other than a breath taking view. This year we want to get there right as they open, hire a guide, and make the most it then head over to one of the beach clubs. When I woke up I noticed that the winds were down and the bay was much calmer than the previous couple of days. A perfect day to get Aidan out to snorkel. We moved the Tulum plans to Friday but still made the journey down there to reprovision at the San Francisco grocery. On the way back we took a detour through Pueblo Akumal. It was about the time when the ... read more

Day 4 The morning started off as usual, my up with my computer and coffee while the boys sleep for another hour or so. This morning was one of extreme frustration with both my computer and my inability to read all the boxes that pop up thoroughly. The previous night we tried to download a movie from Itunes but couldn’t due to lack of hard drive space. We found out that all the pictures I have stored on my computer (mind you they are of every trip, ball game, party, etc from 2005) were taking up way too much space. So I need to find an alternative solution for storing my pics. Luckily my husband brought his thumb drive from work and I was able to transfer the pictures that I hadn’t backed up at home ... read more

Woke up early again this morning. Started my morning routine with opening all the curtains in the living room, started the coffee, and got on the computer to catch up on some emails. This morning was very overcast so I checked a weather website and saw we were going to be under clouds for most of the morning. The boys got up about an hour later and we took a stroll down the beach in the other direction. When we got back from our walk it was getting close to when Isabel, our housekeeper, was due to clean so we decided it was a good day to check out Aktun Chen. I had read about this nature attraction and thought it would be a great time to go underground for a couple of hours. So we ... read more

First full day in paradise Good morning, it’s 7:30 am and I am sitting on my patio (at least mine for the next 6 days), which happens to be about 100 ft from the ocean, enjoying a nice cup of coffee and a beautiful sunrise. Although, it has been a bit windy yesterday and this morning, it looks like it’s going to be a wonderful day none the less. I have Norah Jones on the IPod dock and the boys are still asleep….this is what I have been needing! **Cut to 4:00 pm** What a great day it has been. Aidan woke up about 8ish and we took a nice walk down the beach. Just a couple of doors down there is an abandoned beach house(or condo). Seems odd to me but we have now dubbed ... read more

Yesterday was our travel day and it was for the most part very uneventful. We left the house at 4:30 am to head to the airport and all went well. Due to weather, we were delayed getting into Atlanta for our connection and as Murphy (Muphy’s Law) would have it, our connecting gate was on the other side of the airport with only 7 minutes to connect. I sincerely have a new appreciation for the contestants on The Amazing Race. You seriously have to be in good shape to book it through airports like that. We make it to our connecting flight only to be delayed another 30-45 minutes waiting on other flights that were also delayed. This was no problem for us but the 100 or so young spring breakers in our cabin weren’t so ... read more
