Wednesday June 30th was a success. I returned to the pueblo with Antonio and interviewed a woman and her daughter. They weren't the best interviews because many of their answers were very brief but regardless, it helps. We ended up at a Mayan restaurant where I met a family who owns the place as well as works in the hotel industry. I hit the jackpot! Or is it 2 words.......Anyways, the owner was from Chicago and manages a hotel on the coast. His honest answers blew me away. I'm saving those details for my thesis. His wife is from Guerrero, one of the most beautiful places in Mexico, and she has worked in all the big resorts of Mexico. When I say resorts I mean "hubs" or destinations (terms used in my field), such as Cabo, ... read more

Monday June 28th started a very productive week. I jumped on the colectivo and headed to Akumal pueblo to find community members to interview. I found 5! With my effed up Spanish I managed to explain the research I'm doing, the reason I want to interview them and setting up appointments. I admit, I need to work on my grammar skills. I always fuck up verb tenses so my sentences sound so odd. Perfecting my Spanish and starting a 3rd language, possibly Polish, German or Mayan, are some of my big plans after grad school is finished. Back to my exciting day.........My volunteers were: one woman who worked at a laudrymat, a man who worked at the internet cafe, a woman just sitting in front of her home and 2 wonderful ladies chatting it up in ... read more

Day 2 was an very unproductive (thank you unreliable wi-fi). The good thing is that I now have 3 interviewees that I plan to talk to this coming week. I have come the decision that I will only stay in Akumal for a month instead of 2. The remaining time I will spend satisfying my curiosity by visiting the Mayan ruins that consume this beautiful place. Not much has happened in the last 24 hours so sorry for the lack of excitement today. ... read more

I arrived on a Tuesday, (I count as day 0), lacking internet, a communication tool that my life has become heavily reliant upon. Yesterday I finally gave in a jumped on the 15 minute 20 peso colectivo headed south to the magnificant town of Tulum, famous for its ruinas that bear the same name. The town is cute, busy, has good food, drinks and free wi-fi. There I found el rincon poblano, a cafe that deserves much more credit that any travel guide has given it. In fact, I have yet to see it mentioned in any guides. I left there at 9 PM only to be dropped off at the side of Hwy. 307 which connects to the main road where I am staying. The worst part, the main road where I am staying is ... read more
