Zipolite, only about an hour bus ride east of Puerto Escondido is fabled as southern Mexico's perfect chill spot and recommended by several friends I met in Puerto. Zipolite was one of the most picturesque beaches I've ever seen and I had the place virtually to myself! Zipolite is a tranquillo place where I got to sleep in an open air hammock about 100 paces from the ocean, it doesnt get much better than that!! The first day we went on a snorkeling tour that took us to 4 beaches as we swam with sea turtles, jellyfish and all sorts of weird looking fish and then went cliff diving off a 30 foot high rock!! All this for just $12!! At nighttime we all hung out on the beach and had a bonfire as we reminisced ... read more

Wanna get away...wanna really get away then continue on to Zipolite. Located just one hour from Puerto Escondido via the small town of Pochutla you will find the beauty and tranquility that you have been searching for. The photos may be impressive, but they really don't show the true beauty of this place. You must see for yourself! Upon arrival to Pochutla, we flagged down a taxi and headed to Lola's on Zipolite beach. It is always best to have some idea of how much a taxi is going to cost before you flag one day. The best thing to do is ask the locals on the streets or the people in the bus station or last resort confirm from a travel book, but at times the books are a bit outdated. It is best ... read more

Route since TulumHi all!!! I am not dead!! A quick note to tell you I have sprinted across Mexico since Tulum like a mad man. Palenque: Jungle + Ruins + Waterfalls Oaxaca : City + Mountains like the Alps + Chipolinas Veracruz : Ugly beaches and Port Chachalacas : Dunes of gray sand and a lot of wind And today I arrived in Zipolite to crash down for a couple of days. I have to go and look for a Cabaña now, so I can hang my Hamac and recover from an exhausting-excellent week!!! I had too much of a good time to upload pictures, and there was not so much internet around... But I'll post Photo's, video's in the coming days. LOVE TO THE WORLD May peace prevail The Magic is in your Head Cosmic ... read more

Ya, I decided not to spend my spring break in Cancun or Puerto Vallarta. Instead, I strapped on a backpack, and aimed for a secluded beach somewhere along the coast of Oaxaca State. I had met a Swedish girl in Israel this past summer, who was travelling Mexico with a few friends and decided to visit her and spend a week at the beach roasting in the sun, smoking a little ganja and sippin' on some Sols and Coronas. (Coronas are the best). The week was awesome. To get to the beach, you need to take a bus from Oaxaca (normally around 6 hours) that will leave you in Pochutla, a small town near the coast. Unaware of different bus stations, while in Oaxaca city I purchased a bus ticket from the second class bus station. ... read more

ENGLISH Zipolite: Haven for nudists, the weeded out, bean curd addicts, Bob devotees and the meditative. There's a beautiful beach here and though it's only a few miles from Puerto Escondido it's a world apart. After the sun set in the sea, there were oil burning torches to light our way to the reggae bar, replete with hammocks. Sustenance was provided by way of quesadillas and of course oversized beers (at just 15 pesos) and tequila (the finest Jimador Reposa... read more

As trailed in the Lonely Planet, this really is the perfect chill-out spot. Long, lazy days. Not a great deal to do. There is one tour to do: an excellent snorkelling, rock jumping, turtle/dolphin spotting trip hopping between four different beaches on a outboard motor launch. Did the tour yesterday and had a fantastic time. Loads of italians, three Danish, some French and three Brits. A really relaxed group, with really entertaining and likeable guides - organised by Profund Azul, with offices in Zipolite. Surfing is the most active option, but I haven´t mustered the energy to wrestle the waves. Most of my energies have been directed towards working on my tan and choosing between the myriad of seafood items on the excellent menu of Restaurant San Cristobal - I can recommend both the Red Snapper ... read more

The journey began again today, in reverse. Derek picked me up at my place on the beach. Since Steve (the traveling Englishman) was leaving this day as well, we gave him a ride to the bus station. We took a bus from Pochutla to Huatulco, which was about a 1 hour ride. Derek had to use the bathroom so badly that the bumps and stops and starts of the bus made "holding it" excruciating to him, which entertained the children in the seat in front of us. I flew from Huatulco back to Mexico City. On the plane, I was seated next to a man who asked me questions about my trip, about Zipolite, about myself. He apparently thought I was Mexican as well, although my non-flowing Spanish probably revealed me as an American. He told ... read more

Traveled to Ventanilla with Derek and Samuelito this morning. We toured the mangrove swamp that Ventanilla is known for. The tour was a long walk along the beach at Ventanilla to the lagoon. We climbed into a row boat with the guide, and off we went. We spotted 3 crocodiles during a tour. Ventanilla is a beautiful conservation project run by a co-operative of Mexican families. There are several conservation projects including the conservation of sea turtles, crocodiles, iguanas, deer and mangrove swamp. The mangrove was all but destroyed in 1997 by Hurricane Paulina and since then the staff at Ventanilla have been rebuilding it. We pulled into the "island" of the lagoon which Derek joked was the island of Dr. Moreau. And it did look spooky and abandoned. Here we saw the baby crocodiles they ... read more
