I spent the entire afternoon on the beach - finally! I climbed the steps to Playa del Amor and sat there a while on a rock, wondering how foolish I looked sitting there on the beach in the rain. However, I was not the only fool. After a while, I climbed back over to the main beach where I lay in the sun and fell briefly to sleep while watching some of the local boys dive into the waves. I wandered further down the beach and stopped at Hotel Neptune, which was apparently the only bar open during the afternoon. I was joined by Steve, an Englishman who was also staying at Solstice. We sat at a table in the sand, and were greeted by Michael, an American from Florida who left on vacation and hasn't ... read more

Derek threw a get-together at his house in honor of Jillian, a girl that he teaches with at the university - she was to be leaving the following Tuesday to go home to Colorado. Everyone brought snacks and we had a nice little buffet of hummus, guacomole (Tony's diarrhea-colored concoction, but it was good), homemade bread, and some kind of ham roll-ups. Delia had made two mango pies earlier in the day - they enticed poor little Samuel all day long. So much so that he bounced and clapped when he finally got to eat a piece! It was so so good. Another recipe I need to get from Delia... I enjoyed talking with Peter, who talked with me about difference between the British language and American English. I still don't understand why they don't say ... read more

Friday Walked on the beach again this morning. No camera this time. Just me and the dogs. Part of my regular routine - a long walk on the beach wearing whatever I slept in, and then come back to the cabana for some cafe' con leche and to rinse the sand off. I walked to Puerto Angel again. Spent 30 pesos (less than 3 dollars) to use the internet and check my email. The only problem I had was trying to type the @ sign - it's on the Q key and I couldn't figure out how to make it - ctrl, alt, shift - tried all combinations. Finally I just cut & pasted it! On my way back toward Zipolite, I decided to wait for Derek to go home for siesta. I sat on the ... read more

Spent the morning walking the beach and watching the locals. Climbed the rocks on the west end of the beach nearest to Roca Blanca and picked up some shells to take home to Jolie. Walked to Puerto Angel again to visit Derek at the university (Universidad Del Mar) and met some of his co-workers: Tony (from Barbados & Canada), Peter from England, Jillian who is from Colorado, and Bennie from Texas. (Big dumb Texas, as Derek says). Later on in the day, I went with Delia and Samuel in a collectivo taxi to Pochutla. Pochutla (Derek hates it and calls it "Poop-chute-la") is a little town about 7 miles from Zipolite, where there are is a market. Delia needed some things to make pies for a little get-together they were having. Walking back to the beach, ... read more

After the rain let up, I decided to walk to Puerto Angel just to get out of the cabana and to get some exercise. The walk from Zipolite to Puerto Angel is quite dangerous. Derek told me of a time he was hit by a car walking to his job at the university. He wasn't seriously injured, but to be hit by a car....scary. I walked along the road to Zipolite, about a 2 mile trek, mostly uphill and with sharp curves in the road. Many of the locals walk this every day, and I met many of them along the way. I watched in wonder as people rode past me on bicycles on these steep hills. I walked out to the pier and eventually started talking to a local fisherman. I was ecstatic to be ... read more

I woke up this morning to even more rain. So much for a walk on the beach this morning! Bridgett made me a stout cup of cafe con leche that I drank in my cabana, still wondering what the hell I was doing there. No TV to watch while I drank my coffee, no email to check. The only sounds were that of waves crashing on the beach, locals chit-chatting in the street, and some roosters crowing in the distance. After a while, the rain let up and I took a walk on the beach. A dog joined me for my walk along the beach. (There are many stray dogs in Zipolite, as there are no vets to spay or neuter the animals here.) He stopped everytime I stopped and stayed right with me all the ... read more

I set out on my first international solo trip today. Woke up at 4 am, drove to DFW, flew into Mexico City, then finally arrived in Huatulco at 4 pm or so. Derek and his son Samuel met me at the airport. We walked a few blocks to catch a bus to Pochutla. Samuelito and I waited inside the bus station watching a street vendor sell iguana tacos while Derek went to the store to pick up some rum for later. Upon arrival at Derek's house in Zipolite, Delia had some wonderful fish and salad waiting for me. We then sat around catching up with each other, drinking Cuba Libres until around 8 pm or so. I stayed at Solstice Yoga again. I booked a bungalow similar to the one I had stayed in before. Bridgett ... read more

Huatulco, Oaxaca, México 21:00 We spent a wonderful week of Oaxaca together. I believe it was one of the most marvelous weeks of my whole travel. Today she left me. She is going back home and I continue my journey south. I wrote a longer report in Spanish and Slovene.

Overnight in Zipolite I had been eaten alive, I'm unsure whether it was the fleas from the dogs, or mosquitoes... I think it was a combination of both. The ironic thing was that if I had not been as pissed I would have noticed the mosquito net over the bed and used it. Anyway - enough beach already, a trip to San Cristobal scene of historic Hispanic architecture and near the fantastic Mayan Ruins of Planque was needed. San Cristobal is also on the way to Guatemala. We waited for a collectivo - small vans that run regularly to Potchutla, well at least according to Lonely Planet. After about 45 mins we gave up - had breakfast at the hotel - which took 45mins to be served and then got another taxi - 60 pesos between ... read more

Arriving at Potchutla at 5am wasn't a pleasant experience. After leaving the coach we were swarmed by around twenty taxi drivers. After being rudely wrenched from poor quality bus sleep, I wasn't up to dealing with this many insistent people. We had planned to catch a connecting bus to Zipolite, had no where to stay, and didn't really want to arrive at 5.30am. The coach had gained two hours on its expected arrival time. Plus - I'm now a savvy budget traveller - a taxi is well beyond my means. We dragged our gear to a bus station and sat and waited. Being the rainy season in the tropic of cancer, there was a huge thunder storm, so much water fell, we had luckily found a dry spot - a bus shelter - it must have ... read more
