The first of only four destinations in Mexico was Palenque, to see some more ruins. These ruins, again, were set in the jungle and it was a bit more peaceful than Tikal. It was nice to spend the day there, wandering around and listening to all the jungle noises. Second destination was San Cristobal de las Casas, a really nice colonial town with lots to see and do around the area. I took a tour to the small towns of San Juan Chamula and San Lorenzo Zinacantan. In Chamula, we went to the amazing church, lit up by thousands of candles, to witness the weird ritual that the local Mayans partake in, which is to drink rum and then drink Coca-Cola, in order to burp and release their evil spirits. This is a ritual for the ... read more

Greetings! We've been having a wonderful time exploring ¨D.F.¨ (districto federales) or Mexico City. Despite its enormity, the city is quite easy to navigate, people are generally friendly, we have fealt totally safe, and the air has been...not too bad. The Metro (subway) here is absolutely incredible - 2 pesos (20 cents) gets you anywhere you want to go. Service is extremely frequent and the stations and trains are spotless. It´s also very well used - supposedly some 5 million people use the metro every day! Another treat has been the hostel we're staying in. The volunteers and staff running the place are awesome, travellers and ¨residents¨come from all over the world and always have interesting stories to share. There's a little kitchen that we've made use of when the street food becomes too much. And...dear ... read more

We´re here! We arrived safely yesterday in the afternoon, and then successfully navigated our way (todo en espanol) through customs, purchases, making hotel reservations by phone, and taking the Metro. We´re staying at a wonderful hostel run by Mexico City Quakers, ¨Casa de los Amigos¨ near the Monumento de la Revolucion. It´s a very quiet, peaceful, beautiful place run by friendly people who are patient with our struggle to speak and understand Spanish. We met a few other travelers who are volunteering in Mexico City or en route to volunteering (at an organic farm in Chiapas, for example). Mexico City is BEAUTIFUL --- we seem to have arrived in the low-smog season, because the sky has been clear and blue all day, and just a little hazy at night. All the colonial Spanish architecture is gorgeous, and ... read more

Olin jo ihan varma koko illan, etta lompakko jai ens... read more

Woke and watched more Spanish rubbish on the huge hotel room TV. Saw that it had snowed in England, shame. Went over to the airport and checked into the hotel nearby, then took the metro back into town and walked around the Zona Rosa shopping area and had a look around a large monument on Paseo de la Reforma. Had a chinese then headed back to our hotel and packed for the morning's flight.... read more

Today was a very busy day which started with a tour to see the Virgin of Guadalupe shrine in Mexico City. This Catholic miracle is the image of the Virgin which miraculously appeared on the cloak of Juan Diego in 1531 and today is one of the most visited shrines in the Catholic world. The cloak is displayed permanently in a new Basilica near the old Basilica which is sinking into the ground under it's own weight (like much of Mexico City). Anyone can view the image of the Virgin, conveniently passing underneath on a conveyor belt! On the 12th of December over 3 million people descend on the Basilica, today was a bit quieter :) We had an hour to look around the area which included the old Basilica on the hill where the Virgin ... read more
