Mexico City! I am staying at a hostel directly behind the Metropolitan Cathedral in the Zócalo. The Zócalo is the main square at the heart of Mexico City officially know as the Plaza de la Constitución. In addition to the Cathedral the square is bordered by the National Palace, Federal District building and the Templo Mayor, which was the main temple when this was the Aztec city of Tenochtitlan. This area has been the center of a major city for over 600 years. The cathedral is largest and oldest in Latin America. The Spanish used stones from the Aztec temples they destroyed. This is such a great city. I have been really impressed every day so far. It gets a bad rap in the U.S. but certainly doesn't deserve it. The people are incredibly gentle and ... read more

So we are finally starting this long awaited adventure! After a week of cleaning the house, frenzied final preparations and packing, where we had to put everything we needed for 6 months for 5 people in 4 small suitcases, we are ready! We picked up the boys from school, where their friends and teachers were very sad to say good bye, and we drove to the airport, Shakked immensely happy with a farewell present from one of his teachers - a book about Greece - the place he is looking forward to the most. The flight was not easy, with Maytal wanting to crawl now all the time, but we made it through. The boys were happy as can be with our presents to them for this trip - their own ipod touch. We landed in ... read more

Our around the world trip has finally “started”!!! I quote that because our first stop has been MEXICO for 8 days. We planned on meeting in Mexico with my parents, sister and our brother in law because my sister is there working for a couple of weeks so we could give our farewells to my family. Mexico City I arrived on Sunday, Nov. 8th and Rustin arrived a couple days after me. I spend two fun days with my mom, sister and a couple of very special friends that I have in Mexico. I have to say … It was a delight to once again be eating Mexican food in Mexico, after 4 and a half years of my last visit there. It is nothing like the Mexican food you find in an average Panamanian or ... read more

Right, sorry about the brashness of this but I've got about twenty minutes on this thing that the hostal claim is a computer to upload some photo's and write something. Right. Where to start. Mexico City has to be the most of it's tits place on planet Earth. Strong words are needed to describe this place so if you're offended by swearing just look at the pictures. My hostal, the Hostal Joven Catedral, is about thirty seconds waklk from the Plaza de la Constitucion, a massive square in the middle of the city bordered on two sides by the cathedral and the main government offices. So as you can imagine, it's pretty much the centre of everything. I've been lucky to get five hours sleep since I got here. Not that I'm complaining... So, day one. ... read more

Hello all and welcome back! To those of you who followed the Ghana chronicles, I hope I can continue to delight and entertain. For any newbies to the blog, a hearty welcome. As some of you might know, I am headed to Mexico this coming Sunday for six weeks in a country that I feel I already know by heart. For the first week I will be seeing the sights of DF (Mexico City, for the layman among us) with two girlfriends from Elon, Becca and Kara. We shall hike up ruins! Traverse cobblestone streets! Step over the threshold of Frida Kahlo's blue house and marvel at her genius! For the final five weeks, I will continue on alone to attend la Universidad de Guadalajara and live with what I can only assume will be a ... read more

Coming back to the centre of Mexico City after almost five months living in Guadalajara and I can barely even remember what I thought of it the first time round. U guess jet lag and culture/language shock didnt exactly help but I'm pretty sure I didnt think much of it! It's quite nice therefore to be able to see it again, still with fresh eyes but this time less blurred y sleepiness and language difficulties. Now reading guidebooks about Mexico City dont exactly help build up one's confidence about staying here - especially considering I'm a young woman and I'm alone. All of the warnings about not taking taxis, not travelling alone, not going out at night, keeping anything worth anything on your person not in a bag - and then the advice on how to ... read more

... read more
