By the time I got through writing about everything we did up to reaching Chihuahua there wasn´t enough time to write about anything else, including Chihuahua. Truth be told there´s not all that much to write. It is a working town and we had the good fortune to meet some friendly people at the bus station when we arrived who were kind enough to direct us to the correct bus before we passed out from the heat. Man, have I mentioned how hot it is yet? If not, I´m sure to do a lot of repeating. Temperature wise things did not change in the time that we spent in Chihuahua. We did, if anything, spend as much time as we could in air-conditioned comfort. But ofcourse not before we were running around like dehydrated chooks. We´re ... read more

Barranca del Cobre! Hombre!

Today I went on a tour of Creel. I spent an hour yesterday afternoon shopping around for an English speaking tour so I chose this particular one for that reason. But this morning I discovered the tour guide spoke no English. Thankfully there was a Moroccan tourist in the group who works as an English-Spanish-French-Arabic intepreter for Amnesty International. He was on holiday but kindly offered to translate for me. We got along really well and exchanged email addresses. I'm building up quite a list of contacts for when/if I get out of Latin America! The other people on the tour were a father and his two kids from Juarez. First stop on the tour was the 400-year-old, San Ignacio Mission, built by the Jesuits, which is a property with a population of 500 Indians. It ... read more

Our guide didn't turn up for our sunrise hike so I watched the sunrise from my balcony, took a couple of photos then went back to bed. The two hour hike after breakfast was fantastic. There are railed lookouts for tourists in some sections of the canyon but one particular rock ledge is not and there is a loose rock that the some of the tour guides walked out on to get photo ops for the tourists. I thought if they can do it, so can I so I climbed across to where they were and stood 7800ft above sea level on the edge of this rock ledge! The other tourists were a distance away so I look like a dot on a rock ledge in the photo but it's definitely me. I would never do ... read more

Off to a good start. Not. I woke up at 4am to be ready for my 5am pickup to Los Mochis train station. So I go down to the reception bright as button only to be told it was actually 4am. It appears I didn't ask about the time difference when I checked in yesterday; Los Mochis is behind Mexico City by one hour. With a 3am start, I was afraid I may fall asleep on the nine hour train journey to Divisadero but I didn't! How could I -- it was the most beautiful train trip I've ever taken. There was a food and beverage carriage too! I had both seats to myself and while most of the scenery was on the other side of the carriage, I managed to find an open window between ... read more

On y va... Today we climbed up out of the canyon of Batopalis in the van, the road is incredible, a dirt road with ruts and drop-offs and we drove for 40+ miles. We took a side-trip to the Cascade-waterfalls. Our car, a Suburban, followed what appeared to be a foot trail, up and down dirt rocks, then turned onto a stream and followed the stream to yet another dirt road. Yes the waterfall was lovely, but the journey was incredible. Between the wind and dust and the dry dessert it was good to get back to Creel. The Best Western was a sight for dusty travelers, way too expensive, but …Oh that hot shower was great! Monday February 12, 2007. After breakfast, we said “Goodbye” to our travel friends---what fun people. Paula, Frankie, Jim and Wally were such ... read more

28th June to 7th July 2006 I promised culture and a decent blog this time round and the real Mexico (outside of watching Football) proved the perfect foil for such an entry, providing me with much material. The CONTENT of this entry may cause offence to some but, please remember these journals are just a reflection on my experiences. It is not my intention to offend anyone, these are just my opinions which I am perfectly entitled to, just as everyone is. The QUALITY is also a matter of taste but, personally, I think it's fantastic! Shamefully, I didn't make time to investigate or explore Mexico's mixed heritage as much as I would have liked or, indeed, as fully as I promised myself I would. However, the one tour I did take before leaving Mexico City ... read more

Friday- by truck At about 8 the next morning, Arturo and Adreana met us outside our hotel. Arturo's two neices were also going, so the cab and the bed of the truck were full. Then we stopped and picked up some hitchikers to add to the fun. Adreanna had some breakfast tacos to share for breakfast. When the truck lost a shock absorber on the rocky road and we stopped to detach it since it was loose and dragging, she said I was getting the authentic Mexican experience. It was fun. We got back to Creel, withdrew more cash from the ATM, paid our tourist visas at the bank, and bought our ticket to Barrancas _____, just south of Divisidero. Just before we left, we ate at this great restaurant across the railroad tracks from the ... read more
