continued..Unfortuntately it was still blowing and we hoped that tomorrow would prove to be more user friendly, but the clouds were ominous and for the 2nd day in a row cloudy and cool at night. When we were in Salt Lake City, we bought a mesh tent, and still had not christened it, so figured what better place than this. Jaime was all rocked up to sleep outside and rightly so, Sam not so much so-tends to be a little chicken sometimes, so I offerred my services-didn't take much.. Is there anything better than1) camping in a mesh tent, on a sand beach, on a warm night, on the Baja? 2) Camping with your two favourite people, and buddy Gracie in a mesh tent, on a sand beach, on a warm night in the Baja, 3)Not ... read more

We spent one night recouping at Casa Blanca in La Pas doing email, laundry, swimming in the freezing pool(not me), filling up with water-all of the things that you can't do when you're boondocking on a beach. The plan was to travel to Playa Telcolote on the Cortez side and to boat to Isla Espiritu Santo. We arrived at Playa Tecolote in the early afternoon. I was told that beachcombing here was more interesting and was looking forward to spending quality time in search of the ultimate shell, and to begin my shell chime career. It wasn't as crowed as we thought and were easily able to find a spot on the beach-right on the beach, witness to the Sea of Cortez, aqua marine and clear warm water, white sandy beach with all kinds of goodies hovering ... read more

What, pray tell, would I buy? There is nothing out here that is not free for the asking. Can you buy a sunrise? Is there a price to the exhilaration we feel from the thunderstorm that rages outside? Nature is the truest democracy, and not the richest man in the world is served a grander sunset than the beggar. Michael Furtman Buenas dias todos! As some of you might now, I'm still in Baja. It's a tough life. My seminar went great. I learned quite a bit. I am now a very comfortable kayaker in 90% of doable conditions, and I have the basics of both surfing and rolling. It was pretty dang fun too. One of my instructors was a guy named Matt who used to be a NOLS instructor but for the past ... read more

The high desert has an effect on people. The place has a way of swallowing you up. -Campbell Scott So the first thing that I must clarify is that I am not actually in Loreto. Loreto is about 100 km south. I am on La Playa de Coyote off of La Bahia de Conception. It's a pretty neat place. But first, lets recap a bit: After spending some quality time in Portland, I found that I had developed quite a liking for the tiny city that everybody thinks is so large (it only has 500,000 people). However, the time had come for me to drop Ash off at a hostel, and continue south. I spend the next day and a half driving from Portland OR to San Diego CA. It was pretty uneventful, just long. ... read more

This week I have a few pictures of the St. Patrick's day party held in El Juncalito, hosted by Joe and Vicky "Cat House". It was a nice sunny afternoon. There were contests for best joke or limerick spoken with an Irish brougue, best irish jig, best irish song. There was a great assortment of appetizers. We had a cruise on Bagabundos over to Marquer, a bay on Carmen, to spread John"Gertrud"'s ashes on Sunday. ... read more

This is the week of March 12th. Finally the wind has stopped and the weather is warming up. We have been in snorkeling and looking for pen scallops. We were successful. We had a nice dinner for six with the findings. Bacon wrapped scallops. Yum Yum!! We have decided to leave the boat in Puerto Escondido while we are in Canada. We hope to come back down in September for hurricane season. There was mayday yesterday on the VHF radio. A man had a cardiac arrest on a sailboat out by Carmen Island. The people in the harbour rallied around and found a mooring for her and we had a vigil on the boat of some 12 hours with body before a van from a funeral home came for the body. All for now. We hope ... read more

When the Spanish explorers arrived in 1533, this place was known as Concho, meaning "reddish mangrove". At that time, it was principally inhabited by the Pericu Indians, who provided for themselves by collecting fruit, hunting and fishing. With the arrival of the Jesuit missionaries, the Baja peninsula's first mission was established in 1697, making Loreto the Historic Capital of California and Baja California until 1777. The city is recognized for its enormous diversity of natural resources, pleasant climate, tourist infrastructure and well preserved colonial village atmosphere. These attributes have made this town one of the favorite destinations for cultural and recreational tourism here and abroad. Puerto Escondido. Just 28 kilometers (17 miles) south of Loreto (15 km/9.3 miles from Nopolo) lies the largest natural marina in Mexico. An entrance port to Loreto through the se... read more

Chuck's Visit to Angelos This week we had Chuck McGill a friend of Kip's fly in for a weeks visit. We did some hiking and lots of visiting and he started me working on this blog. We hiked over to Juncalito, from the dinghy dock via the back of the canals, over hill by the range markers, across the salt flats and down the beach to visit Dick and Heather at their palapa, then by the fig tree beach to the caves with the shrine, then back to Dick and Heather's for a cup of tea. The hike took about 4 hours. Next hike was up Steinbeck canyon, with Bob and Morraine, and Susan and Wayne and Chuck and myself. This was after Sunday brunch at the clubhouse. This week was omelet day. You take two ... read more

Dogs, roosters, loudspeakers, music, gusting breezes, dust........BUT it is sunny! The rooster pen is just adjacent to this RV park. They do NOT stop! But hey, it IS, after all, Mexico ......... Today, Saturday, is market day in almost every city in Mexico. It is a fun thing to visit but this one is more for the locals. Clothing, much of it second hand, is for sale, as well as fruits, veggies, meat (unrefrigerated!!!), cheese and household goods, even some furniture. It was soooo windy that even some of the vendors were threatening to close shop. The dust was really bad. In fact after we got back, I was covered in a dust crust!!! LOL!!! Only the main roads are paved--well, if you can call it real pavement, and all the side streets are dust. After ... read more

The 24th at 8.30 am we were on our way out of Playa Santispac in Bahia de Concepcion and on to Loreto some 90 miles from here. After using the dump station, Mike had a little trouble getting out of the turnaround b/c it really is not designed for larger Rvs . And throw in all of the rocks and bumps and you have a very disgruntled man! We had thought that the drive here was not going to be too bad but we were wrong again. Loads and loads of winding hills and hairpin curves again!!!!!! It was very beautiful landscape but the highways are treacherous with the curves and hills!!! We got here around 11 am into the city of Loreto. Loreto has a population of about 7500. It is considered the oldest continuously ... read more
