When the Spanish explorers arrived in 1533, this place was known as Concho, meaning "reddish mangrove". At that time, it was principally inhabited by the Pericu Indians, who provided for themselves by collecting fruit, hunting and fishing. With the arrival of the Jesuit missionaries, the Baja peninsula's first mission was established in 1697, making Loreto the Historic Capital of California and Baja California until 1777. The city is recognized for its enormous diversity of natural resources, pleasant climate, tourist infrastructure and well preserved colonial village atmosphere.
