Day 24. Since I was staying put today the day began with bacon, eggs and toast. I cook bacon and eggs ever Sunday at home but a little more often while camping. I rarely ate eggs in the past 55 years but it’s another source of protein and cooking them over easy still let’s me dip my toast in the yoke like I did as a child with a soft boiled egg that mom would prepare. I still don’t enjoy egg whites to be honest. Without toast I don’t think I would eat them. When I unloaded the bike yesterday afternoon I figured I’d ride into Regina to go to the gym but things are always changing right? Since I got a case of Diet Pepsi Lime in Sicamous when I was there I’ve been looking ... read more

Day 23. 5459Km. I was up at six and it was six degrees this morning in Cochrane. I started to wonder how many days or months I’d slept. I had a slice of toast and some yogurt again to make a quick exit. I really should have looked at the route the GPS was taking me on because I went right through Calgary since the Trans Canada Highway is a main street. I came into Cochrane from the South and I should have left that way too but there was very little traffic that time of morning on a Saturday so the delay was minimal. I’d received a Subway gift card last year on my birthday and finally used some of it today. I usually just pack a bit of cold meat, cheese and crackers for ... read more

Day 6. 2884Km. I got a roadside education from the RCMP today. It’s been a lot of years since I was stopped last. I don’t know if he was in a good mood or if I showed the proper amount of respect but I’m told I avoided a $1200 fine and I suspect some demerit points as well. The only constant is change. I did it again. Because the drive from Thunder Bay to Winnipeg is a long one my original plan for today was to make a shorter day and stop in Indian Head, Saskatchewan and then have another long day tomorrow. Having spent an extra day in Winnipeg I decided to go further today and shave some distance off tomorrow’s drive so here I am in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. I still got here about ... read more

Geo: 50.3969, -105.536Let's be honest- we drove the long distance to MooseJaw, Saskatchewan because we were told that the filming location for the most outdoor scenes of one of our favourite TV shows was in a neighbouring town, ...... And what is that TV show?? The very Canadian classic- Corner Gas. Admittedly Corner Gas is something of an acquired taste, and the premise of a glacier slow life experience in a very small Prairie town isn't normally the source of belly laughs but there is something very humorous and Canadian about it. Similar to riding a scooter, it was one of those shows that always got good ratings and was lots of fun, but no one would actually admit to watching it. It's been in reruns for a few years now and the town isn't quite ... read more

Left Brook 9.30am for our drive to Moose Jaw - Saskatchewan. There is not a lot to blog about this drive except to say it is a long drive on an open, flat highway with plain-lands everywhere you look. The sea of grains along the highway is sometimes interrupted by some dairy cattle or an oil drill but apart from that it is uneventful. The trans Canada highway through Saskatchewan is in good condition and used by big rigs as well as everyday vehicles. The Canada Pacific also follows this highway and we saw numerous freight trains carrying many carriages along on their journeys. The province of Saskatchewan is known as the "Land of the Living Skies". Most people use Saskatchewan as a way of getting to someplace else - which is exactly what we were ... read more

You don’t really get a name like "Big Ball of String Girl" if you aren’t interested in roadside attractions. Also, HAVING the label actually makes me feel entitled to stop and see every little thing. Like, it’s my responsibility to stop and see if it’s worth a picture. Which is why between Outlook and Fargo ND we saw the World’s Tallest Wheat, the World’s Largest Moose and the World’s Largest Buffalo In fact, we had to reroute just to go to Moose Jaw to see the World’s Largest Moose - "Mac". Mac is 32 feet tall, and is still (at the moment) the Tallest/Largest. (There seems to be something in the works in Sweden, but nothing completed as far as I could confirm...) During the planning stages of my trip I realized that I could not travel for an entire year without returning home for a “break” as I am very family oriented and knew that homesickness would be inevitable. The fact that my sister would be graduating from the college of Dentistry in June gave me the perfect excuse to return home at what just happened to be the "halfway point". I spontaneously changed my original flight date of May 30/12 to May 23/12 so that I could return home a week early. I was feeling tired and had lost my energy to keep moving forward. It takes a lot of effort to keep motivated and continue moving to different places, saying goodbye to old friends, and trying to meet new friends. I was finished. My mind kept ... read more

Neither of us had ever been to Saskatchewan. We had several days off and it was only about 60 miles away, so why not. We decided we would go up to Regina, the provincial capital and the second largest city in the province (after Saskatoon), and on the way we would visit Moose Jaw. We intended to just drive through Moose Jaw and continue on to Regina, but Moose Jaw turned out to be an interesting-looking little resort town, so we decided to spend the night and check it out. We found a nice campsite in a city park just across the river from town and settled in. The town has a very colorful history as a wide-open center for bootleggers, gangsters, crooked cops, and speakeasies, and during the prohibition era was a major hub for ... read more

IF AT FIRST YOU DON’T SUCCEED... Saturday, 23 June 2007 Took Silver out today, as I REALLY wanted to locate the TransCanada Trail in Moose Jaw, and I wasn’t sure how rough it would be. It would pretty much be my last chance to do so, as we’re leaving for Regina on Sunday. Needless to say I completely botched up the first times I tried to locate it. I rode directly from our motel to where I though it would be & in fact found a large sign which seemed to indicate I should turn left at the next corner. I wound up in an industrial area, which went nowhere, so I returned to the sign & after examining it closely, as well as the surrounding terrain, I said “oh, well, I’ll just go for a ... read more
