NICOLLE WHO? Friday, 22 June 2007 Today we were all going to go to Buffalo Pound Provincial Park, named after the structures used by the natives to confine or trap buffalo ‘way back when. (I imagine they were something like the chutes used today for bringing in cattle from pasture) Using Blue I went ahead of Bob & Panna, who opted for some exercise & errands before meeting up with me. The road conditions were fine, not like yesterday’s winds, and I was 2/3 the way there by the time they passed me. As we weren’t 100% sure if I could enter the without paying for a pass again, we thought he should wait for me at the gate. On the way there, I decided that if we could find a suitable place for me to ... read more

Pilgrimage to Rouleau Thursday, 21 June ‘07 Today we all went to Rouleau. Rouleau, Saskatchewan is the site where “Corner Gas” is filmed, at least the outdoor scenes. Corner Gas is a Canadian comedy show, about life in a very small rural town called “Dog River”. It could really be almost any small rural town, in Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas, or any such place where agriculture is the mainstay & those who aren’t farmers have a pretty minor role in the general scheme of things. It’s one of our favorite shows. Anyway, it certainly seemed like a reasonable distance for me to cycle there, and Bob & Panna would probably pass me about 3/4 the way there & we’d meet & take some photos. Even if there was not much to see there, how many of our ... read more

Two Bikes in One Day Wednesday 20 June ‘07 Day 2 was again nice & sunny. Bob drove me to Keeler, from where I intended to bike back to Moose Jaw. Again I was using Silver, this time because Bob had some small work to do on the blue bike and this way he could get it done. It started out OK, but I was troubled by a squeaking which had begun on Tuesday & which was continuing. On a bicycle, if you’re hearing squeaking, it usually means something’s rubbing, which can really add to the effort needed and possibly damage the bike. When I stopped for my lunch break (good thing I brought a peanut butter sandwich, as there was no restaurant around) I decided that since I was heading to Moose Jaw anyway, I’d ... read more

Of ticks and prairie dogs Friday, 19 June 2007 A brief interlude here to mention the ticks and prairie dogs that are very prevalent here. We first became aware of the ticks in Moosomin, on our way out. To be honest, I had one in my underwear, not exactly what I wanted to discover. Needless to say, I’ve been a bit paranoid since then. And so has Bob - he woke up one morning here in Moose Jaw to find one on his pillow! Panna too has picked up numerous ticks, which we’ve picked off her, usually before they settle in. I picked up some of the Hartz Mountain tick & flea repellent/killer, which will hopefully lessen the problem. Fortunately, according to the Saskatchewan Department of Agriculture, the ticks here do not seem to carry Lyme ... read more

I GUESS SASKATCHEWAN DOES HAVE HILLS! Tuesday, 19 June ‘07 Well, today was the starting day for the Super60 Cycle Tour. Up to now we’d been planning, getting stuff ready and travelling to the start-off point (Moose Jaw). Today would be Day 1 - FINALLY!! Last night Bob & I discussed the routes I might take. Bob really wants to know where I’ll be in case there’s a problem. At home I’d mapped out a route which would have avoided the principal roads, but they don’t seem to be as busy as around Ottawa, so I decided I’d rather use the paved primary roads, as opposed to the secondary roads, which are mostly dirt or gravel. We also tried out the satellite phones, but Bob’s seems to be unable to pick up a signal, whereas mine ... read more

AND ON TO MOOSE JAW Monday, 18 June ‘07 The last of our travelling days started off rainy & cool. I put in one last exercise ride on the bike, travelling from the motel thru the town streets to a county road, dirt & gravel, and returned via another paved road to the motel, only about 17 km, took about an hour. Meanwhile Bob made sure Panna had some exercise at one of the local parks. We then loaded up Casper & hit the road. It was very, VERY wet. According to the motel owner, the previous 24 hours when we had arrived had been the only 24-hour period in quite a while where there’d been no rain. There were huge puddles all along the highway and in the fields. Makes you wonder if these farmers ... read more

Moose Jaw! Saskatchewan, fun to say, difficult to spell! Today we saw fields and more fields. I miss the rocky outcroppings and inukshuks. We did stop and see the World's Biggest Moose! It is a male moose too. Really! They just hang there. Horty needs to get to a wedding in Edmonton so we are just zipping by! I would love to stop and smell the roses...or moose balls.... read more
