Sydney Today we are in Sydney, Nova Scotia - we decided to do a private tour to Louisburg Fortress which was a great tour. Louisburg has been perched on the edge of the continent for 300 years and was once a bustling seaport, a hub for trade and commerce on the Atlantic. A multi lingual, multicultural community and France's prize in the new world. The Fortress of Louisburg is North Americas largest historical reconstruction costing in excess of $160M. The tour guide was extremely enthusiastic about the history of Louisburg and was great to listen to. The guides and shop and other people there were dressed in period costume and you would think you were back in the 1800s'. It was a very cold, wet and windy day today and we were quite wet ... read more

Sept 19th-20 Cruising to Cape Breton we encounter great roads with a 110 km speed limit, 4 lanes, rolling hills …..and a toll booth. The sign said toll road 22km, which I took to mean that the toll for $4.00 was only for the last 22km. Doing the quick math my brain said, That’s almost 20 cents a km, man is that expensive. As we rolled on past the toll booth, Vicki enlightened me to the fact that the toll was for basically the rest of the road we were on, which was about 200 km. That made me feel better. The views in Nova Scotia are incredible, with every turn in the road or crest of a hill giving you yet another eyeful of beauty to behold. Our gps, knowing we couldn’t get enough of ... read more

I stayed at a most wonderful BnB in North Sydney, Heritage Home. It is an old preserved home from the early years right on the water front. The rooms reflect the time period and there are multiple places to sit and take your ease. Inside, in one of three parlours. Outside, on the back deck, in the garden, or on the front porch looking at the sea. That was my option. But first, I arrived and no one was there. The door was unlocked, there were notes for me and a few others, but no guests and no hosts....disconcerting. There was a note listing the best restaurants, so I went and had fish and chips at the Waterside. Excellent. It was walking distance, which I needed after the pile of fresh cut fries. Still no one ... read more

"I've tried everything I know, to try and make you mine And I think I'm going to love you for a long, long time" Linda Ronstadt started us off on a long days' drive from Charlottetown to Sydney NS via the Cape Breton National Park with its spectacular headlands, vistas, mountains, lakes, and inlets. The scenery was spectacular, although not necessarily any better than others such as Big Sur. It was a day covering over 500 miles, and we have to leave the hotel at 2:30 tomorrow morning to catch the ferry to Newfoundland, so this will not include photos or any long dialog. More later. Tomorrow: ferry to Port-aux-Basques Newfoundland and then on to Grand Falls-Windsor NF, another fairly long day.... read more

This blog is dedicated to Richard Moore and his wife Leslie Wilson, Owners of and Chef at Lobster Pound & Moore Smokehouse Grill in Sydney, Nova Scotia. Our Heritage House on the Hill B & B hostess, Wanna, recommended this restaurant for dinner and called to make us a reservation but she got the answerphone. Instead we walked the 5 minutes from the B & B to the grill at 7:30 pm and were welcomed and seated in this very unique, bistro style cozy establishment. We ordered some house wine and were about to peruse the menu when the chef came to our table and introduced himself, told us we were the last table of the evening as they closed at 8 pm, but we could absolutely stay until 11 pm as they would be there ... read more

Its my turn to write again. Only because I have learned some more stuff. Since the last time I wrote the blog I have learned that there are some very friendly people in our great country. Because I have a hard enough time with speaking english, I have never taken the time to work on my french. Because of this I found myself apologising to our french hosts for my lack of communication skills only to have them apologise for their rough english. Not once was there any attitude coming back at me. When I discovered that the signage and traffic lights are totally inadequate in Quebec, no one seemed to disagree with me. Other drivers stopped when I chose not to. When I pointed out that the one way signs were not large enough, other ... read more

We spent the last couple of days relaxing, catching up and feeding our faces at Breda and Adrian's gorgeous home in Truro, N.S. Great timing to celebrate our 26th wedding anniversary and Pat's 61st birthday. Pat decided to purchase an air mattress, seems the thin self-inflating foam just doesn't cut it this time out! I picked up some heavy socks and of course batteries to fill two air mattresses! Pat said he could "smell" the ocean in Sackville, does that man have a nose or what! On our anniversary, sunny, hot day, we all piled into Adrian's truck (Breda, Adrian, Martin (Adrian's brother and wife Sally) and Pat and I). Drove over to see "Fox Harbour" where Ron Joyce of Tim Horton fame has his luxurious home, had lunch in Wallace and checked out the Josh ... read more

TRAVELOGUE Saturday, May 16, 2009 Sydney, Nova Scotia Hello from Sydney, Nova Scotia ~ Well, our weather could not have been more perfect today. It is about 60 degrees outside and completely clear skies with no winds. Can it get better than this? We’ve had a wonderful day here - but as we are leaving port right now, we are being serenaded by what sounds like our sixth grade band with Brunhilda singing. It is actually a group of quite elderly men and one woman. Her voice is not only off key but it is piercing to the ear. Even with our cabin door closed, you can still hear her screeching tones and the drums pounding. It gave us all a good laugh if nothing else. She made an announcement that was was not going to ... read more
