(A word of warning to all my readers who are not in Law School- you may find this blog entry- A- Boring, B- Just won’t care, but read on friends If you feel like learning something new today!) Under Section 753 of the Criminal Code a person can be declared a “Dangerous Offender” and can be sentenced to prison for an “indeterminate amount of time.” At first glance, the only person I could think of who fit this description was the notorious Paul Bernardo, and yes, he has been declared a “Dangerous Offender.” (And rightfully so, in investigating this designation I read the judgments regarding his crimes and it was and still remains truly nightmarish stuff.) There have been an above average amount of “Dangerous Offender” hearings in the Northwest Territories because ... read more

(The title of this post is a quotation made by the Justice overseeing a jury trial in one of the local First Nations communities while on-route) I thought it was about time I updated you all about my comings and goings during the past week! This posting will take on a more serious tone as I have had an opportunity to witness court proceedings and travel to one of the local First Nations Communities. Before I start, for the sake of privacy and confidentiality, I will not be using any person or place names in this blog without permission. I don’t want people to draw unfair conclusions based simply on my observations and opinions. Last week I sat in the Territorial Court during Criminal procedures. The one thing that I noticed immediately is that every accused ... read more

Sup homies! I made it! Woot woot woot! I have got some pretty sweet digs here living with the lovely Nadia. The room is quite cottagy and I was lucky to pick up some groceries on my way into town so I'm all set. I am still figuring out my camera so I have no new pictures to post- but tomorrow I am going to wander. I got a driving tour through Old Town today and it is sweet yo. Like super gorgeous with amazing unique real estate and a big ol' rock cliff that overlooks Slave Lake and the city. Simply amazing. Other things I found out that are awesome include: -They sell fresh fish in front of the KFC every three days. (I also think this is hilarious.) -There is an aboriginal school on ... read more

Saturday August 6, 2011 Checkpoint to Blackstone Territorial Park I made good time today; the road was in good condition even with gravel. I rode 105 km’s today with no wind to fight and also no wildlife. I rode from Checkpoint to Blackstone Territorial Campground. I even got stuck in a murderous thunder storm. I think “my” rain cloud caught up with me. I don’t think it was expecting me to take that shuttle van from Yellowknife and was it pissed at me. I ended up paying full price for my campground only to find out the showers were not working. I was not over pleased. But then I ended up getting my camp site for half price because I ended up sharing the site with a biker from Illinois named Bill. So I guess it ... read more

Thursday August 6, 2011 My Longest Furthest Day I noticed that the evenings are getting cooler (as I wait for bus). The bus was actually a passenger van towing a trailer for luggage. There was maybe 8 others taking the shuttle. It was probably the most uncomfortable ride of my life. The whole way I just remember twisting and turning trying to get comfortable and feeling great discomfort because it was impossible to get comfortable. I awoke at 5:30 am as we were pulling into Ft. Providence. As we were unloading the driver offered to take me to the ferry because we would have to wait until the ferry started up at 6 am anyways. On the way to the ferry we saw 3 bison. At the ferry the driver then offered to take me to ... read more

August 1, 2011 Yellowknife I attempted to dry things out this morning but that didn’t last long. It was a big scramble to get everything back in the tent before the rain. I was stuck in the tent till after lunch. I spent the afternoon updating blogs and doing emails and getting a few supplies. You would be amazed how long it takes to keep these blog current. I still have stuff to do tomorrow so I will spend another day in Yellowknife. Yellowknife is a good little town. It is neat and clean and they have everything you need. The only store I would miss is Future Shop. I don’t know about the social dynamics of the town; due to the strong presence of natives but I like it here. I am at what I ... read more

Saturday July 30, 2011 My friend the Rain I woke up to sunny and hot. A few hours later it was pouring rain and it was a race to get my rain gear on. Luckily the rain was early afternoon giving me time to dry out. I saw 2 more bison but due to the rain I could not be bothered to stop. I see signs of bison everywhere. They may not be on the road but I can tell there is a very healthy population here. I only saw 3 cranes today; 2 adults with a young one. Makes me think that the young must have a very high mortality rate due to the fact I mostly see adult pairs. They have a cool call and I can tell they are pissed when my presence ... read more

Thursday July 28, 2011 Ft. Providence The weather looks good this morning and I got a good start this morning. The terrain is changing bit by bit. There are a few more dips in the road and I always seem to be going ever so slightly on an upward climb. I did a stop at Lady Evelyn Falls. It was a 16 km side trip; 8 there and 8 to get back on the highway. I saw 7 Sandhill Crane today. The first 4 took to flight (as usual). I got real lucky with last 3 cranes. I was able to photograph them. It seems that wildlife get real nervous when they see me coming on a bike. Most animals seem quite accustomed to vehicles but they don’t know how to react to me, on a ... read more

Wednesday July 27, 2011 Never a Day Without Rain I got an early start this morning and did a little exploring of Hay River in the area known as “Old Town”. This area is an island and is where the campgrounds, the beaches, the view of Great Slave Lake, a native settlement and the run down industrial area is found. Well the “whole” town is run down; old and new. What is considered “New Town” is part of the main land and where the city center is located along with most of the residents. I also got caught up on my blog and emails at the Information Center as it seems to be the only place I could find free WI-FI. Hay River is what it is and unless I intend on visiting Wood Buffalo National ... read more
