I left the Bay of Islands for the Port au Port peninsula on the west coast. First stop was a hike at the Gravels, the isthmus where the Port au Port peninsula begins.This is a lovely, well-maintained coastal trail of seven km in length. At a leisurely pace it took me about two hours, including my pictures and four launches of a "message in a bottle" at different parts of the trail. The views were of course coastal in nature with magnificent views of the bays and beaches and unique rock formations typical of Newfoundland's coasts. While in Stephenville I walked the short trail (15 minutes one way) that led you along a stream bed to a number of fossilized trees in the water. A trail to do if you have nothing else to do. Today was our last day on the rock, with over 600 kms to the Port Aux Basques ferry terminal from Gander. Can we talk about something other than the weather?? One last chat: We awakened at 7 to drizzle and fog and the temperature hovering around 5 degrees. Newfoundland was determined to have the last say, the weather deteriorating the further west we travelled, the island proclaiming her last hurrah as mystical climate goddess. Heavy fog bid a final farewell; angry winds waved furiously at times; relentless rain stepped in for one last kiss. And then in the last minutes of our ride and without warning, the sun came out of nowhere like a sultry temptress with sparkly eyes, eager to seduce you on her own terms when you least expected it. To StephenvilleBrad and Treena The amazing day of May 10 (my birthday) began with a ferry ride from Rencontre to Pool’s Cove. It was a much earlier start to a birthday than I would have wished for, but we had a big day ahead. From Pool’s Cove we had to bike 50 short kms to Hermitage where we were to catch another ferry in the afternoon. The biking was fantastic, for the first time on the trip the down-hills outweighed the up-hills and we flew down the road in brilliant sunlight and made it to Hermitage in record time and were able to stuff ourselves silly with food outside of a grocery store before hitting the ferry once again.
