With just 2 hrs of sleep in the last 24hrs we were finally ready: Camping + Climbing + photo gear packed without being overweight or oversized which was going to save us extra fees in the long run. We purchased a specialty Cressy Apnea Team freediving bag to maintain the airlines guidelines and wrapped the fins with 7mm wetsuits to protect them. We acquire extreme sport insurance with "The Atlas International" just in case US$ 250 deductable US$ 500000 deductable totally worth it: US$ 283 for 5 months. On the carry on we had: photo gear on a backpack that would fit ( Sony Vaio FW560F, two Canon camera bodies, 6 lenses, flash and filters). On a second backpack we had four 500 GB hard drives in a hard case to protect them, 2 iphones that ... read more

Well, I'm going to keep this short because typing on an itouch is a bit of a pain in the ass. I'm sitting in the Vancouver airport with 2 hours to kill before I can even check in. One nice thing is at least there is free wifi here. But no lockers, I'd really like to ditch my check bag so that I can go to the bathroom and maybe into a resturant. Instead I'm just sitting here drinking my last Timmy's double double, making the need for the bathroom even more urgent. That's going to be it for now, need to keep walking around so that I can distract myself for another 2 hours. Cheers. ... read more

well hello again! it has been quite some time since the last trip and blog, but here i am again on my own. traveling. and loving it. first stop for this year? beautiful sunny, beachy hawaii. why? why not? really... it isn't culturally different, or even exotic by any stretch of the imagination. but it is the ultimate beach. turtles galore. manta rays. black sand beaches. surfing. snorkeling. i will be in heaven! of course luck would have it that this trip also commences in the beautiful and up-to-date LAX... and we all know how close i am to LAX... from vancouver to LAX, then to kahului, maui. arriving just in time to enjoy the evening and my first hawaiian sunset. staying at the banana bungalow hostel (*please insert banana hammock jokes here*), i hope to ... read more

It’s been a while, but here I am in the air again bound for a foreign destination. This time it is Vancouver, Canada. Not too exotic compared to some of my other travels, but definitely a place that has been on my “to see” list for a long time. I am staying with A., a flight attendant who found my blog when doing some research online for her own trip to Nepal. We became e-mail pals, and then when she stopped in Kathmandu for a few days prior to a trek through the Himalayas, I showed her around a bit. She graciously offered me her spare bedroom anytime I wanted, so I traded in some of those thousands of frequent flyer miles I had accumulated during my time abroad for a $57 flight to the Canadian ... read more

Hello again, I arrived in Vancouver around 4:30 and am leaving at 1:45pm on June 20th for Ottawa. I managed to get Amanda all ready to go and have her Dad pick her up at school yesterday after she finished her final exams. My car was too full to be able to take both myself and Amanda plus all of our stuff to Nanaimo. I opted for taking the Duke Point ferry to Tswassen to try and avoid rush hour traffic in to the city. I was only delayed about 20 minutes south of the Dease Island tunnel. After sorting out my bags I dropped the car at Craig's girlfriend, Stephanie's parents, Dick and Carel's. I had a really nice visit and then my brother-in-law, Jonathon picked me up and drove me back to my hotel ... read more

It's hard to believe that a few short months ago I spontaneously decided to vacate the country, chase the solar eclipse and get lost in Asia. Now here I am, sitting in the airport in Vancouver BC about to board the long flight (18+ hours!) to Hong Kong. It's been kind of a blur. But first, I have to mention my utter amazement at the help and support of my friends. I've been the humble recipient of generous gifts, extraordinary effort, and unwavering confidence in my mission. I cannot possibly list you all, but you know who you are. Thank you. The lead up to this moment has been just as chaotic. Within a week I did the Granite Man triathlon (you're a friggin' trooper, Laura), blew through a full time load of school finals (Kristen ... read more

Last day in Shanghai Yesterday was my last day in Shanghai as much as I will miss Asia I am looking forward to sleeping in my own bed, not being lost all the time, and not having to deal with the language barrier. Yesterday we went out for some Thai food with Ramien and a couple of his friends than went and did KTV (basically karaoke) which is something I have never really done, and was more fun than I expected. Dinner was fantastic I really have acquired a taste for Thai food, I wish I had the time in Chaing Mai to take some of the Thai cooking classes I saw advertised maybe when I get home I can find a good resource on Thai cooking if you know of a good Thai cooking resource ... read more

Well today started off bad somehow I still never leave myself enough time to get ready when I have early flights, While running late in my rush I managed to get halfway to the Whitehorse airport before waking up enough to realize I forgot carry on bag (containing passport), thankfully the roads were empty, and 20 minutes later I was running into the airport serenaded to the sound of "flight... to Vanccouver now boarding" I made the flight but I'm not sure if my luggage did, there is a lesson here I suppose. I hope I finally learned it this time as Ill get to spend lots of time inthe air to Shanghai wondering if my luggage will arrive when I do. or a day later. After spending many hours in the YVR I thought I ... read more
