Friendly Canadian camper gave me a few glass places in Fort St. John to check about getting the cracked windshield repaired. He also told us of the Muncho Lake area that we should be sure to spend some time at, and to be sure to visit Liard Hot Springs. After several attempts by local gas attendants to direct me to the glass shops, I decided the best thing to do was borrow the yellow pages, and do my own research. I finally talked to some very friendly and helpful employees of Peace Glass in Fort St. John, and we were on our way again in about an hour after Shelby and I learned how to repair chips in windshields. It’s been a busy old week since I left Whitehorse. On Friday, I headed south towards Alaska again, stopping off at the town of Carcross on the way. Carcross is another one of these “preserved” old towns: and is also one of the termini of the Yukon & White Pass Railway. I decided against taking the train down to Skagway (the other terminus), but I did take a couple of photos of the train for all you train fans out there (you know who you are!). While I was in Carcross I also had a quick look at the Carcross “Desert”. Well, the town I'm currently in - Fort St John in Northern BC, isn't even currently listed on Travelblog, which probably sums up a lot right there. Instantly reminding me of something of a cross between Manjimup and Karratha (in West Oz) I'm not quite as distressed as I would otherwise be that I'm holed up in a hotel room with the flu *oink oink* (hahaha! just joking!... or AM i? ;) Getting here was probably the most interesting part. We left Milwaukee at 6am and arrived here at midnight... and the sun shone the entire time! I drove on the wrong (right) side of the road for the first time, ate Poutine at some crappy rural Alberta diner and arrived in a complete daze at some obscure oil and gas outpost on the Alaska Hwy. ... read more
