Distance driven: 400 miles / 640 km Cumulative distance driven: 992 miles / 1,587 km (only 16,000 miles to go!!) Today’s trip: Whitehorse, Yukon, Canada to Liard River, British Columbia, Canada Wolves I almost run over on the road with my motorcycle: 1 Fellow PanAm riders encountered: 1 Scottish rider headed north, who had started in southern Argentina and was now finishing his PanAmerican highway trip. The midnight sun finally got to me. I woke up at 5:30am in my hotel room in Whitehorse, with a feeling that it was in the middle of the day. That’s because when I peeked out of the window, the sun was as bright as it normally is at noon time. It appears the sun never really does set in the summer here. After an early breakfast, I started riding ... read more

We left the campground at 8 am once again, and drove into town to gas up and get some pictures of the Mile 0 sign for the Alcan highway. Met a nice couple from Edmonton that was traveling in their RV for the next month. They showed us some pictures they had taken of a Grizzly and her cub walking along the shoulder of the highway. Incredible shots. After the obligatory Kodak moment, we headed out on the Alcan. The scenery for the first 200 miles was pretty non-eventful. More flat, agriculture land, with nothing much to see. We passed through towns named Fort St. John, Wonowon, Pink Mountain, and Sikanni Chief. When I say town, I'm exaggerating quite abit. You slow down from 100 Kilometers per hour to 50 KM, and are through town in ... read more

We left Fort Nelson bright and early to beat some of the heat. Had a long drive to Liard Hot Springs but arrived safe and sound and oh what a treat to soak in some natural hot springs at the end of driving. Official animal count is 2 bison 2 bears now and a beautiful bald eagle on the way to Liard. Had another soak in the morning with no one else there but Ken and me. It was wonderful. Then on the road again to Teslin, YT we are making some good time. Fuel gets more expensive and we paid $1.73 a litre for diesel just north of Liard Hot Springs but cheaper in Watson Lake, YT (they don't pay the 18% fuel tax here). We are making good time and have managed to enjoy ... read more

Today we visited the local Fort Nelson Museum which was very unique. It started out as a private collection of old cars and Alaska Highway memorabilia. Once the word got out in town that Marl was collecting things, the folks began to bring him the things they would find on walks or buried in their yards. After awhile the Historical society bought his collection and now it's now all in one place. Other than the museum, today has been a pretty relaxing. We did learn a new marble game last night and since the women won I am sure the men will want a rematch tonight.... read more

Our travels took us 130 miles northwest to Fort Nelson today. We are in a very nice, but busy park. At one time this afternoon they had 8 RV's lined up to check in. There is only one other park in town and it's nothing to write home about. At least here we have Wi-Fi, cable, water, electric and sewer. All the comforts of home>>>> As you can see we even were able to park three in a row (Gerdes', Ancell's & Osborn's). Temperature at 4:30 was a balmy 70 degrees. Not bad since it was 36 when we got up at 7:00 this morning. I had to take a picture of the sign that was in front of our truck at the grocery store. It's been a long time since we have seen a "falling ... read more

Oh Goodness. I hope I can tell this right! Somewhere between Muncho Lake and Fort Nelson, far ahead, I saw a sign for “Dixie Lee’s Fried Chicken.” Now, I don’t know how many of you have ever been to Dixie Lee’s, but they have (or used to have) THE BEST EVER “Loaded Joes”. Loaded Joes (for those of you who have never had the privilege of tasting them) are specially seasoned potato chunks (like pan fries), smothered in layers of sour cream, grated Cheddar, bacon bits and chives. I hadn’t had them in YEARS!! (Dixie Lee’s seems to have been primarily a British Columbia restaurant, and even in B.C., they are far & few between now.) ANYway, despite the fact that we had just had breakfast, I didn’t want to miss the opportunity for Loaded Joes, ... read more

So we got out of Grande Prairie about 1100 this morning. Uneventful ride from there to Dawson’s Creek, other than the rain, fresh gravel repair, bird strike, and hail. What are you going to do for any of them other than press on? At DC, we meet up with about 6 other riders all headed the same way. There was 1 from NJ, TX, FL, one from Heber Springs, AR, and some others. Mike and I decided to push on to Ft Nelson. We figure the closer we are when the road opens, the better our chances of doing what we came for, and catching the ferry. Latest updates we have heard for road opening are from Monday, until days from now. We are going to play it by ear, and make a decision Monday. Tomorrow, ... read more

Monday August 8, 2011 Beyond the NWT to BC I got an early start this morning but somehow I lost my early start by going into Ft. Liard. I needed supplies and for very small town they had everything spread way out. I also put the bike through a power-wash to get all that mud off the gears and chains. I also needed breakfast but by the time I got to that it was lunch. There is one killer hill getting out of Ft. Liard and the rest of the NWT seemed to be all big climbs. If I only had a case of beer to celebrate the end of all this soft loose gravel at the border. I actually got lucky; of the 40 km’s I had left to the BC border the last 20km’s ... read more
