(PLEASE NOTE: We're not really in Fort Nelson, but it's the nearest town.) We arrived in Dawson Creek, the town at Mile 0 of the Alaska Highway on 22 June. I don’t know how much y’all know about the highway, but it’s an interesting place and interesting concept. MUCH OF THE INFO BELOW CAME FROM WIKIPEDIA: In the early 1900s, the US government tried to convince the Canadian government to build a road that would connect the lower 48 with Alaska. Canada wasn’t interested in building a road for the US. In the 1930s, with Japan on the rise, the US asked again, but Canada worried that allowing the highway would prevent them from maintaining neutrality in their relationship with Japan. However, the December 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor changed priorities, and in February 1942, construction ... read more

Pas ... read more

Monday, June 26 & 27 Today was an animal day. We traveled from Fort Nelson B.C. to Muncho Lake B.C. It was a very steep and winding road but beautiful scenery that offered a lot of wildlife sightings. I first spotted a black bear who was so kind to sit and look at us as we drove by. Then we came upon a small heard of Caribou. My picture didn't come out very good due to the fact that we couldn't get very close. As we traveled farther up the road we came upon some stone sheep. We ran into a couple of herds of them. We arrived at Muncho Lake early afternoon and got set up. It is a beautiful glacier filled lake and that is crystal clear and blue as a pool. The campground is ... read more

Up at 5:30 AM, temperature 42. We gained another hour so sunrise is at 4:30 AM... impossible to sleep very late as body clock is still off from the gain of three hours in less than a week. The Alaska Highway formally known as the "Alcan" begins at Mile 0 in Dawson Creek, BC. Alaska highway was constructed during World War II for the purpose of connecting the contiguous US to Alaska across Canada. Completed in 1942 at length approximately 1700 miles it was open to the public in 1948. Today it is approximately 1398 miles due to reconstructions overtime. We started our trek for the day at Mile 0 by taking a group picture of the crew at the monument at the beginning of the Alaska Highway. The Alcan is a pretty boring ride ... read more

25 Jul 2016: Just to bring you up to date, we arrived at Dawson Creek just before 2000 on Friday, 22 July with a leaking water pump. I booked a site at the Northern Lights RV Park for four nights so we could see about getting a new water pump. If not, no problem, we'll just tow it up the road until we get it replaced. The downside is we can't use the Jeep until it's fixed. Well, we could use it but only by running the risk that it would deplete all our coolant leaving us stranded at a place not of our own choosing. We waited for Monday to roll around and I got it down to the Jeep dealer at 0730. They didn't have a factory spec pump but did get an aftermarket ... read more

Spent last night at Northern Lights Campground in Dawson Creek, BC., quite wet and sloppy with snow on the ground. Great laundry and shower facilities...we took advantage of both. We were all up early due to entering the Pacific time zone--it was starting to get light at 4:15 am--plus it was not yet dark at 10:30 pm. Left Dawson Creek around 9 after filling our propane tanks--we've been giving our furnaces a workout with this cold weather. This is the beginning of the Alaskan highway. President Roosevelt authorized the construction of the ALCAN following the bombing of Pearl Harbor. We were considered vulnerable since the Japanese occupied the Aleutian Islands. The ALCAN highway, considered to be one of the modern day wonders of the world, was built in eight months, 1500 miles. We are currently ... read more

Day: 10/11 Distance: 3809 miles After posting yesterday's blog I booked it out of Prince George going up on PR 97 towards Dawson's Creek. About 50 km from Dawson's Creek I changed my mind about going there since there was another road called PR29 that looped to the The Alaskan Highway and Fort St. John and ultimately Fort Nelson. I'd figure I would try to get to Fort Nelson by nightfall. Getting that far should allow me to make the Yukon easily enough the next day. Interestingly, when I turned onto the Alaskan highway, there was a big 'ole sign saying it was the law that all cars traveling from Oct 1st (I think) to April 30th must have winter tires. So technically I am breaking the law since I'm driving the highway without winter tires. ... read more

Left Watson Lake this morning at 8.30am. The sky looked a bit moody but we decided against wet weather gear which worked out fine as it remained overcast to sunny. It didn't take long on the road before we had our first bear encounter; a mother grizzly bear and her two cubs. You can tell they are grizzly bears as opposed to black bears because the grizzly has a distinctive hump on the back of its neck and more of a 'dish face' - the black bear has a pointed face. Also grizzlies are bigger. They were about 20 metres away from us. I will post a video to FB for those who use this. The road was TEEMING with wildlife today and it wasn't long before we saw buffalo on the road, further along we ... read more
