Sadly, we departed 683 and headed for 4445 arriving at 4.05pm. A half hour later the 3 of us sat down to wine, cheese and crackers. Wayne was yet to arrive as he left a few hours later by motor bike. We all met at an Italian restaurant for dinner in Ladner at 7. I’m lost for words at the moment. The realisation that our stay with Lori and Wayne is very close to completion. They have thought of everything. There has been no pressure (only tension when 2 letter words are used in scrabble and the user doesn’t know the meaning of the ‘word’). Wayne and I swapped hats; He received my West Coast Eagles cap while I received a Stetson. Love it.... read more

We are so appreciative of Lori and Wayne for the use of their home while they are in their summer abode on Shuswap Lake. Today was about late up, easy breakfast, washing and ironing, relaxing and a little planning. At 5 we caught the bus for Jane to attend a dinner appointment with Tina, a special person and ex-student from Melville, who now is into her 3rdyear of Bachelor of Science majoring in Bio-Chemistry at UBC, while I continued on to the city and the waterfront, stopping at Steamworks, again, for a bite to eat. Being in the inner, downtown section of the city, Georgia St, Granville St plus Water St and Cordova St, we were very sad to see the dirtiness of the street paths and benches and bus stops. Very different indeed to ’86. ... read more

Another beautiful day in Ladner. We cycled for over 4 hours, exploring areas we had not seen before. We rode along track at the top of the man-made dyke that protected the farmlands (and wetlands) and bird sanctuary from the tidal effect of Boundary Bay. As the weather was conducive to ‘being-at-the-beach’ many of the locals of the area were out enjoying the sunshine on their beach. (See photos). Definitely not Cottesloe however one makes do with what one has. We stopped for a short while at a small café, Beach Grove, and had the best coffee in all of our travels. The blueberry lemon muffin was first class too. I wasn’t ‘allowed’ or ‘encouraged’ to sample anything else! Retracing our tread-marks we made it to the major bus stop to check the departure time for ... read more

This would have been a painful departing, however, knowing that we are returning to this beautiful environment in 3 weeks or so puts the pain on the back-burner for a while. Lori took us along the ever changing and beautiful scenic route until we joined the main highway to Ladner. One cannot get enough of the magnificence of each scene. The ultimate … we saw a bear … in the wild … sadly no photo. On reaching Lori’s home we found that Anni Lind and her husband, Brian, were waiting for us as we had organised dinner at a Japanese restaurant in Ladner. Anni was a teaching colleague from Champlain Heights in ’86 and a very close friend of Lori’s. I had had much fun with Anni whilst working and socialising with her in ’86. For ... read more

Rob and Mary kindly drove us to Manchester Airport, about an hour from Caldy. We had the best time with them. A flight to Heathrow and then onto Vancouver ensured where we were met by our very good friends, Lori and Wayne Henderson. We left Heathrow about 50minutes late due to a ‘technical malfunction’ (it’s how everything with airlines is explained) of disengaging the passenger walkway from the aircraft. The plane landed only 20 minutes later than the scheduled time, however, another ‘technical malfunction’ this time with the baggage carousel saw us exit the building 75 minutes after landing. All that faded into the background when we hit the road as conversation flowed and drizzly rain began. We loved the coolness after England’s ‘heatwave’! We are being treated like royalty in all ways.... read more

Sunday, August 7th, 2016 Day 5: Delta, British Columbia - Where is this picnic? I was sent an email months in advance to hold today's date for a picnic with the extended family. However, my family was not given the specific location of where the picnic was. We were told that it would be at Boundary Bay, which is an enormous area in Delta, BC. When we finally learned the exact location of the picnic, Centennial beach, it was approaching late afternoon. My parents decided there was no point in going. However, since we were not doing anything, a few of us decided to go anyway. When we arrived most of the food was gone so we ate the leftovers. It was too cold to go in the water at the beach, so Renata and I ... read more
