Flying in was quite a treat as there were clear skies and the city lights were very pretty, and as we swung out over the water the landing lights were very clear (and nothing like the ones in Die Hard). We stopped for food on the way back from the airport and it was the first time I have been able to safely have a salad (no guaranteed clean water in south america). Next day was downloading my photos; seemed to take forever, even with 6 gb missing! Next day I tried to get my chinese visa, only to be told that I had to be a canadian resident. Oh ******, that scuppers things! Sorry for the wasted trip Dad! Next couple of days were pretty quiet, apart from uploading the photos to a portable hard ... read more

Hey everyone, It's been awhile since I blogged, but that's because life has been so busy--that happens when you put it on hold for a month. I haven't even finished sorting out my photos from my Africa trip. And now I'm prepping for the next trip. Afterall, it's over 7 weeks since I arrived back home--high time for the next adventure. I got a note from one of the African travel companions today, who said "hope you are busy planning your next adventure, i know i am!" Well, the "next" one was planned quite a long time ago. This one takes me to Newfoundland. The occasion is an ORNAC conference (as in, Operating Room Nurses Association of Canada). No, I am not a nurse. But my wife, Joy, is. She and two other nurses left last ... read more

A lot of people ask me how I ended up traveling in Africa with a group of 19 other travelers, none of whom I had previously known. So let me explain. But first, let me tell you a little about the 20 of us. Of the 20, nine were male, 11 female. Four were from the UK, four from Ireland, four from Australia, six from Germany, one from New Zealand, and me from Canada. Ages? A German couple in their 50s (as am I), a German man in his 40s, four in their 30s, six between 25 and 29, and six from 18-24. It was a bit younger group than is typical with a Dragoman Overland trips, which claims to average 42 yrs. old and regularly has people in their 60's (according to our leader). Of ... read more

Photos It's taken awhile, but I've finally been able to add photos to the blog. I should mention that my camera died at Swakopmund, so I was without a camera for the next three days, until I was able to buy another one in Grootfontein. So the three photos of animals at Etosha are courtesy of Asha Thobani, one of the members of our tribe. Enjoy. I do have another 500 or 600 photos, but you'll have to come visit me to see them. Continuing the blog While it may be a little while before I'm personally on another trip (actually, it's only a month before I spend a week in Newfoundland), I've decided to continue to blog on this site--and probably do so more often. The blog will contain commentary/evaluation on tours and tour companies, ... read more

Well, I've made it home, and am currently seriously jet-lagged, but let me fill you in on the last week. Chobe, part 2 The last afternoon in Chobe, we went for a sunset cruise on the Chobe River. What a fabulous ride that was! Along the shore we saw herds upon herds of elephants, some with whole families (the youngest elephant we saw was estimated to be 5 days old.) And, in the water, hordes of hippos played around, babies climbing on their mother's back, etc. I have some photos with both elephant and hippo families in the same photo! But both nights in Chobe, our tents were infested with ants, so we were happy to leave there the next morning. Zimbabwe Because of the high water levels, there was concern about crossing the Zambezi River ... read more

Well, my trip is almost here, and I'm getting mighty excited! Shots done, tickets bought, supplies purchased, practicing my camera skills, and have done some hiking to get into better shape. Monday evening (Mar. 23), I leave Vancouver, flying direct to London (Heathrow). Since I've got 8-1/2 hours in London, I get a nice little bonus on this trip--about 4-5 hours in the downtown area. It'll be my first time to Europe (other than a Zurich airport stop on my trip to Nepal). Tuesday evening I board a South African Airways jet for Capetown, landing there Wednesday just before noon. Capetown is 9 or 10 hours ahead of us (depending on time change, which happens at a different time there than here). Thursday night I meet the group for a pre-trip meeting, then Friday, early, we ... read more
