Monday: Settling in The connection was tight in Vancouver. With immigration and what not, we made it to the gate 15min before departure. I’ve missed a flight with 10min to spare so we were lucky that they were running late, phew. We got into Calgary at 2 pm. Wow, how long has it been since I’ve set my foot in this part of Canada? After a breather at airport Tim Horton, we picked up the car at 3 pm and hit the road. First stop: Canmore to pick up our camp gear rental. We got there at 4:30 pm as we had pre-announced. Mark was super thorough with the gear. They even rent bear spray which we didn’t know where we were going to get. We didn’t want to buy one because I don’t think it ... read more

We spend 8 days at Banff National Park. It has stunning views of the mountains that surround it. On this leg of the journey we were joined by Joy's daughter Pamela, her husband Dean and our grandson Finley. Pamela and Dean stayed 4 days. Finley will stay with us for another couple of weeks. The campground is close to the town of Banff. A very busy tourist town. We got to celebrate Canada Day with the family and do a several day trips to Lake Louise, Columbia Ice Fields and Drumheller. The crisp air at Moraine Lake was belied by the fall yellow sunshine. Our ascent through the woodland trees brought us in and out of shade. The sun’s warmth and our vigorous steady uphill climb had us shedding jackets after only ten minutes. Mushrooms abounded. The moisture this year has sustained the undergrowth in almost spring-like condition – except that the fall colours are shining through the evergreen forest. Fireweed has shed its flaming flowers, and now the leaves are almost as bright, all-be-it fading to tones of brown in the meadows. In one clearing a grouse hen and a couple of youngsters pecked at the grasses, tiny ripe berries and nutritious seeds. A (related?) male grouse was quite a distance away and was equally disdainful of the danger of our presence – which wasn’t dangerous ... read more

So, in a somewhat last minute decision, we took off for a week camping trip to Banff, Jasper, Kootenay and Yolo National Parks. We had heard the area was beautiful, but had no idea how incredible the scenery is! The Icefield Parkway, particularly driving from Lake Lousie to the town of Jasper is jaw dropping along most of the turns. Yes, it was crowded, very crowded at the popular spots, but we found it very easy to getaway from the crowds, sometimes, in as short as a 5 minute walk. We stayed in campsites, with most of them large, nice and quiet. Except for the night train traffic at Lake Louise. There were a lot of trains! Fortunately, we had made the first two nights reservation at Lake Louise campground, as when we pull up to ... read more

Driving the Canadian Rockies had been high on my 'list' for ages. Due to the cost though, I'd always written it off as something we'd do later, probably when retired and especially not a few months after visiting Iceland, which seriously left my wallet hurting. So how did this trip come together? Well, the boys made some firm friends at school who sadly (for us, definitely not for them), moved to Seattle, so I looked at the possibility of visiting them. Also at this time, a very close family friend of ours who we've travelled with many times was turning 40 and has always wanted to see Orcas from Vancouver. We could always go together and tie the two cities into one trip? It's a long way to go for two city breaks though, so I ... read more

Our destination was Tower Lake, referring to the tower of the distinctive Castle Mountain. The route was simple. And always up. My wearied calculations as the goal seemed ever illusive was a 15% grade, except for the portions of 20% grade. A few dips towards the top gave relief both on the way up, and on the way down, down, down. The best part of this hiking was walking amongst the trees and wild flowers. The dappled sunshine lit the open forest, punctuated by thin, greyed deadfall. With all the rain in the past weeks, the undergrowth was luxuriant with spring-like bright greens. Yellow cornflowers and purple fleabane popped their presence amongst the grasses. Tiny black currants, still sour, promised late feasts for the bears. Concerns about bears and stories about encounters were a rich source ... read more

Yesterday surprisingly we both took the cable car ride to the top of Sulphur Mountain here in Banff. Perhaps even more shocking we both took the walking trail from the top station to the summit. It did help that it was a wooden walkway but it did go a long way up and there were an awful lot of steps. Jim describing it as an epic feat was a bit of an exaggeration. More stunning panoramic views. Photo night will now need multiple intermissions and include geography questions to see who has been paying attention. Last night this part of Alberta suffered a 10 hour power cut causing a lot of disruption, including no hot bacon and eggs at breakfast! Today we have meandered up to Lake Louise, carefully choosing a route guaranteed to bring you ... read more

Senses - Tom Odell It is kind of foolish to think that the stars have anything to do with our life stories. But aren't they mesmerising? As our human lives go back and forth on random patterns driven by our emotional will, they stare and shine without any alteration possible from our part. The obsession by the untouched and the grand makes me wonder why we don't celebrate the micro world as we pray to the eternal. ---------------------- Strong minded people have populated my world since I was born. It is important to me to make the distinction between what people say and how they actually behave. Being strong headed, having a big personality makes people interesting, energizing. They bite in life like there is no tomorrow and advocate for their doings and sayings without withholding ... read more

R: Today is Remembrance Day in Canada and across the world, but in most of Canada it is a public holiday, not that we noticed it much in Banff, being a tourist town. It was a bit surreal to see the British national anthem being played at the Cenotaph in Ottawa on the TV and made us think about Canada's role in British history. There are union jacks flying in Banff. We went to see the military parade in town at 11.30 which was quite small, but consisted of present and past military officers, police (Canadian Mounties from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police), fire service and cadets. It was over pretty quick but Banff isn't a big place. Cate found some Nerds in a shop - not that blog-worthy really - but when was the last ... read more
