I have read in several books, magazines, tourist guides, etc that shopping is the national pastime of the UAE. I have found this to be true as we have asked around regarding what to see, what to do, and what not to miss out on while we are here. The resounding answer is "Shopping!" I like to shop just as much as the next person, but it's really kind of wild how much shopping is actually available. So far I have been to three major malls, countless gift stores, the grocery store, the dirham (dollar) store, and many others. Here are some photos from my shopping adventures!... read more

I havent been having much luck with the computers as the last two long entries have been lost so here is to this one saving! Anyhow after the beehive villages we returned to the hotel where I met my new roommate who was from Canada. We agreed to go out later that afternoon as it was a Friday a lot of Hama was closed. We went back to the Orient House as the food there was yum and it was a very different quiter walk to during the week. Woke up around 8 ish to go to Krak Des Chevaliers which is a crusader castle and is in the mountains mid way between Hama and the coast. As Erin needed to change money that was the first stop of the day and it proved to be ... read more

As I write this I can't believe that we only spent four days in Jordan...we got so much done, saw so much, and had such a great time. We are FOR SURE headed back to this travel destination gem. We threw some extra days into Jordan when we shortened our time in Egypt. We had only expected these two Middle East stops to be quick, but we both agreed that Jordan deserves (and will someday get) much more time from us. Originally our only goal for Jordan was to see one of the Seven Wonders of the World: Petra. Petra got broad international notice when Indiana Jones found the Holy Grail there...we just found an amazing beautiful place and wonderful people. We arrived in Jordan in the late morning and quickly got over to the Royal ... read more

We went postal today. I bought some trinkets for the girls and mailed them today. We have a little post office here on the FOB (Forward Operating Base). It seems that no matter where you go - postal employees are still turse and unhelpful. You would think that for 100,000 dollars a year they could muster a smile. I worked out until late with Mark. We have been working out to pass the time as there is little else to do. I find that it gets me worn out enought to sleep. After working out we went to the Green Bean - a little coffee shop by the PX. They have fruit smoothies with protein powder to help build muscles. Doubt it will make me look like Arnold, but it tastes good when it is hot ... read more

Today I arrived to Jordan by bus from Damascus. It was fairly uneventful at the border which was nice. I had lunch with a Irish guy named Steve that I met at my hostel who is going to work for an NGO in Togo, Africa for 7 months. Then I hibernated from the heat for the worst part of the day (it was 40C), and just too hot to be walking around with a long dress and backpack, so I relaxed until it was cooler. Aterward, I checked out the Roman ampitheatre and odeon that is Amman's main (and really only) attraction. I sat in the park surrounding the ruins and planned the next leg of my Middle East journey, and then I strolled around the streets. I shared my room with a woman and her ... read more

5/20/08 Istanbul We met at the hotel of a local Rotarian. He had hundreds of light fixtures throughout the hotel and at his restaurant, The Fish House. At first it seemed like a bit much, but I think that it would be cool at night. We ate lunch at his restaurant. We had fish soup for an appetizer and a whole fish (head and all) for our entrée. I had the waiter clean mine and take the head off. I saw a picture of what I ordered after I ordered it… otherwise I might have made a different choice like chicken kabob. Today we visited the “Blue Mosque” that is only called that by the tourist because of its many blue tiles on the interior of the mosque. When they were building the mosque the “best” ... read more

Today we woke up early and drove to Ramallah, one of the largest Palestinian cities. Our breakfast was amazing. The pictures do not do it justice. You can not get this food anywhere. Later we met with Amber and went over all of the applicants and mapped out our interview strategy at her home. Adri intentionally did not bring his razor so that he could get his special shave with a straight knife. Later we met with Jawad, a French Palestinian who lives in Paris, who is a filmmaker. Where do you meet when you come to Ramallah? Stars and Bucks of course! After, Jawad invited us to his sister's home in Ramallah for dinner. Her husband is the president of the Palestinian Journalist Association. Later, back to the village to sleep! That stupid donkey woke ... read more

Yesterday was a free day:) Well, I had some papers to write, nothing too big, but I like to take my time to write them. So, I just hung out and wrote papers with some other girls. We had lunch. Then finished our papers. Then I began my reading for today until everyone was finished. Then Holly, Jessica, and I made our way back to Mecca Mall. Nothing too interesting really. We walked around forever then ate some good ol' american pizza hut! It tastes just the same as at home, but my system isn't doing too well with the foods. (Unfortunately Jamie they did not have a buffet:( )I keep eating though! A little gi (gastrointestinal) distress isn't going to stop me:) Then we went home. Well, it is lucky we made it home actually. ... read more
