20th February, Beirut We arrived in Beirut last night just in time for the pension's rooftop BBQ hosted by the owner/manager, Michel. A nice introduction to the city even if we were not quite in party mode after our 8 hour journey from Damascus. Another one of those whatshouldhavebeenastraightforward150kmjourney which turned into something not so straightforward afterall. We are learning fast that all stress-free and successful travelplans dependent on public transport in these regions will do well to factor in what we call the "insha-allah" (God Willing) element. Forget bus timetables, schedules and your 'rights' as a paying customer. There are no refunds nor compensation (unlike the very lovely Eurostar which gave us half price tickets when we were held up for 2 hours returning from Bruge to London one summer) and no, they don't want ... read more

February 4, 2006 (Wadi Musa, Jordan) Shannon: The punctuality of public transportation in Egypt that I had admired in an earlier blog evidently did not apply to private ventures, as we learned when we crossed the Red Sea by ferry to Jordan. The ferry, which was supposed to leave at 2 pm, was still moored to the dock well past 4 pm. Hmmm…not a good start. It was a curious “ferry” anyway, more accurately described as a small cruise ship with a car deck acting in the capacity of a ferry. When we first boarded, leaving our bags down in the cargo hold, we climbed the stairs to the passenger decks. What we found were endless hallways with locked passenger cabins. Where were we supposed to sit for this ride? We finally located a few seats ... read more

It's been a while since our last posting and those of you who know me well have probably gussed the reason why. Yes, for the first time KP gets to surf the net whilst I make a contribution to "our" travel blog. Hence the delay. Although Amman seemed like a fairly nice place our brief stay there was notable for only one reason really - it snowed very heavily! Not exactly what you expect in the middle east. The shared taxi (with Amy and Duncan, the couple we met on the ferry crossing from Egypt) to Damascus took 3 hours, and having obtained our visas in London beforehand, clearing immigration was problem free. James, an Aussie we met in Petra, was not so lucky however and was detained at President Assad's pleasure for an hour so ... read more

Kibbutz Lotan is a very special place, and over the past month it became an important part of me. Throughout the month, as a group we spent most of our mornings working on our project--an "Insect Safari." We built a large wall with date palm branches, mud, and hay that eventually will be the perimeter to some sort of learning exhibit about insects. In the afternoons we learned about ecology, global awareness, Progressive Judaism, and all sorts of other things. The sessions were engaging and inspiring. We spent the rest of our time reading, writing, thinking, relaxing, playing outside with Kibbutz kids, and visiting with Kibbutz members. The community on Lotan was warm and loving, and welcomed us with open arms. We also traveled around the area quite a bit, with one of the Kibbutz members ... read more

A belated Happy Valentine’s Day to everyone. I apologize for my tardiness, but I was anxiously waiting for some photos from one of my co-workers so you could share Valentine’s Day with me…Qatari style. Anyone know a good retail merchandiser? I’m pretty sure that this Qatari retailer could use someone with a keener eye than the one in charge of this display. Seriously! I was actually surprised to see any Valentine’s Day acknowledgements in Doha, but commercialism is commercialism, so when opportunity knocks… why not pair a teddy bear with that beebee gun that every little boy needs before moving on to the more popular machine gun? I wish I had more to write, but I don’t really have a very interesting weekend report, as I had to stay indoors for most of it. Although we ... read more

Middle East » Iran February 18th 2006

According to what people say, this city has between 14 and 30 million inhabitants..you can choose any number you want. This was the longest and most successful trip of all I took to Istanbul. Said to be the city of 7 hills, this first capital of the Ottoman Empire is like a magnet to every person that came to visit it. At least I know that even if I saw it already, I wanna come back and stay more and more and take part to its non-stop life. Istanbul is the only city in the world that lies on 2 continents: Europe and Asia, and it divides Marmara and Black Seas by the Bosphorus pass. My first "serious" trip started one foggy day at 8 am. Unfortunately it started kind of bad (I had an ... read more

I thoroughly enjoyed my time in the West Bank. Five days was not nearly enough; I would have liked to have seen more of Jerusalem and Bethlehem, and gone a bit further afield to Jericho, Ramallah, and so on. But the cold reality of a plane to catch in Amman, Jordan in two days time couldn't be ignored. Farewell to the West Bank and Israel I checked out of my hotel in Jerusalem and inquired about taxis to the Allenby / King Hussein crossing. The receptionist made a call on her phone, spoke a bit in rapid Arabic, and I heard the number "85." I assumed this was the price in Israeli shekels (about $18 US). Imagine my surprise when she hung up and said, "A taxi to Allenby is eighty-five dollars." I just about keeled ... read more

We finally cleared the border from Israel back into Jordan to find that we had missed the last bus and all the taxi drivers were wanting to charge us twice the price we had expected to pay. So we started walking and thought we would hitch or find another 'servis' bus somewhere. But typically after walking about 1 km a bus hurtled past us without stopping. We got a lift with a guy who worked at the border in the duty free shop and he took us all the way to our hotel in downtown Amman and even bought us a juice on the way. He would not accept any money for his bother either and I am sure he went out of his way to help us. Back at the hotel we found our bikes ... read more

not a lot to really update on today as i have been spending most of the last couple of days trying to get over the jetlag. yesterday i laid down for a short nap around 130 and woke up some 7-8 hours later. i really enjoyed that. i found the mall today and it was something else. it would make our malls in okc look like flea markets. we are talking four floors of designer shops with security and doormen. i really felt like someone was going to come up to me and tell me i didn't belong because i wasn't wearing gucci or diesel. i also toured around the campus a bit, trying to get a feel for the place and see what it had to offer. some parts of it are really quite pretty ... read more
