Hello again. Since last speaking with you from Eilat (southernmost point in Israel), we began driving north through the Negev desert, stopping in Mitzpe Ramon, a city that sits on the edge of a steep cliff overlooking the Ramon crater, a deep bowl in the desert whose rocks contain fish fossils, since the crater was underneath the sea millions of years ago. Then we drove towards Beer Sheva and spent a few days living with a bedouin family who now live in a city with homes and streets. Almost every home has a tent outside where the men sit every evening, drink bedouin tea and coffee, and smoke tobacco in the nargila. The father is the principal of a school for blind bedouins, and the wife stays home and prepares food for the family, consisting of ... read more

18th April. I get up early for my 4am transfer to the airport and am a little worried as when i tried to call yesterday to confirm the flights the number wouldn't go through and i assumed that the same thing would happen like in Bangkok. Whilst checking in my worrying increased as they told me to wait as they had to check something. My travel agent at home had also told me that i should buy an onward ticket leaving turkey before i got there otherwise they might not let me in the country. Anyways they come back and give me my boarding pass for my flight to Bahrain and then my connecting flight to Istanbul later in the day and that my luggage will be in Istanbul. So i get on and when i ... read more

Geo: 39.1452, 35.2123Back in the mini-bus we hit the road for Goreme. On the way we made a stop at a school that likes tourists to come and visit. The kids were very excited that we had arrived. Some of them dressed up in traditional clothing and did some singing and dancing for us. Part of the classroom was set up as a traditional Turkish house. Spent the rest of the day driving. Was looking forward to the next hotel, as Hussein told us that the rooms were caves! I found out later on that my room was nothing to get excited about. The hotel is on the side of a hill and all the rooms are caves. The room that I was given was horrible. It stank mouldy, had a tiny little window and was ... read more

Finally after months of planning we have our Iranian Visas! We kept meeting people at the Iranian Embassy in Cairo who had just returned from Iran and were enthusing massively about their wonderful experiences there. So we booked our bus tickets to Nuwieba. We had decided to travel back to the Turkish border quickly so as to try to get to Iran before it gets unbearably hot. It is ironic we went south last winter becuase Turkey was freezing and İran more so, but we did not miss winter. Now we are defintiely going to be too hot somewhere along our route, but we are just going with the flow and you cannot be everywhere in the world at the best seasons, especially when you cycle. But we really feel now that we need to get ... read more

Geo: 37.4213, 38.366This morning we all met in the lobby at 9am, packed and ready to go to Turkey. Fahad has left Aleppo, but made sure that the next tour guide would be here ready to meet us. According to our itinerary, there would be taxi's picking us up and taking us over the border. We soon got a phone call to say that we would not be taking the taxi's over the border, instead a bus will soon be there and we would all travel together with the guide over the border. Okay, so we waited at the hotel as he said he would be here soon. Waiting, waiting, waiting, got another phone call to say he won't be long. We continued to wait and we were starting to get impatient. This was wasting our ... read more

Today we went horseback riding along the beach. Kai stayed with Teresa (their Sri Lankan maid). The horseback ride started out at The Country Club. Before the ride, we spent about 30 minutes walking around the club and waiting. We also got to meet a camel. The day was sunny and hot, maybe 90 to 95 degrees (which isn't that bad, here, as in the summers it can get above 120 degrees). When the previous tour came back, we (and a few other Americans from the base) got saddled up and started the tour going through a neighborhood. My horse didn't have a name placard above his stall like most of the others... so, I went through the desert on a horse with no name. :) The instructor gave no instructions, so I relied on Shawn's ... read more

Today we went to the Al-Areen Wildlife Park and Reserve and also the beach! :) It was hot and sunny again... around 95 degrees. On the drive out (maybe 25 mins.) we passed the Formula One circuit race track, the horse race track, the king's palace, and ancient burial grounds. At the wildlife park, before taking the bus tour, we walked around the entrance grounds and looked at various ducks, flamingos, and goats. The tour bus took as on a loop around the refuge. We saw ostriches, numerous goats, deer, and gazelles, as well as giraffe. I think they were all from Bahrain, the Middle East, or Africa. In the middle of the tour we stopped by a bird park. We saw more ducks, swan, and other birds. In particular were two large (blue?) herons, maybe ... read more

Geo: 36.1498, 37.5119We had a late start today, which was great as a I got a sleep in. We walked through the bazaar to the city's castle. It's a pretty good castle, surrounded by a moat. Inside there are roman baths and a secret passage. From up here we had a great view of the city. We had lunch near the castle, it was crap. I ordered a hamburger with a dried, thin meat patty. Just ate the chips. Walked back to the hotel to check out my new room. Very similar to my old one, I just can't understand why I had to change rooms!Went for a search around Aleppo- the town with hardly any ATMs to get some cash. Found one but it couldn't process my request, which is annoying. Will keep searching later ... read more

I guess after 5 yrs away it would seem awkward at first to return to a former place of residence. But, thankfully, it has not. Things do change, though, and some stay the same for millenia. Thus it is in all places and, especially, Israel. The first thing we noticed was the newer and bigger airport. No more cattle car buses to take you from the plane to the passport lines. No more quaint yet awesomely complete duty-free. Now a proper gang-way followed by a lengthy walk through miles of moving sidewalks and escalators ending at a glass-enclosed duty-free mall to rival the best Europe has to offer. Then on to the usual mediocre service at the car rental desk. Some things do stay the same. This trip was billed, in what we originally planned, ... read more
