We have been travelling north along the coast. The towns vary markedly. My favourites are those with the cobbled streets and fishing village atmosphere. Of course some are highly geared to tourists and the worst look like the nasty side of Spain. We have seen the ugly tourists, badly burned and in search of beer and fries! Oh yes we have plenty of them at home too. I take the opportunity to swim in the sea where possible. The colour is fabulous! The photo here of Kaputas beach near Kas does not do it justice! Accommodation is very good and very affordable by Australian standards. Today we have visited a Temple of Apollo in Didim. Dates back to 8th century BC. Small and so charming. Loved it! Roll on Ephesus! Postscript: Met an aspiring travel guide ... read more

Day 3 - Bezirgan - Saribelen - Gokceoren Today we decided to get up early and then take a break during afternoon when its really hot. Still we got up around 6:00 and left around 7:00. After a short downhill walk we reached Bezirgan We were hoping to get some breakfast here but the town looked closed. We did not really want to get off the trail, so did not really go into the village. We though we will have food at the next village Serebalen which was about 7km away. Little did we know that its 7km of up and down and up again. After Bezirgan, the there is a steep climb for about 20min, and then it took us to a nice wide slightly uphill road. I thought this is good, we are finally ... read more

Walking along the Lycia way - part of it - was a sort of last minute decision. We had thought about it when planning our Turkey trip but dismissed it as it would have involved lot of domestic travel and would take days away from other things. But true to our nature - hikers at heart - we curtailed other plans to accomodate the backpacking trip. Overall we hadnt planned much about the trip. We had a broad idea of the route and had picked the Patara to Kas portion of the hike, but didnt know the distances between the campsites or the elevation profile or whether it was well maintained etc. We assumed it would be a easy hike and we have already done a lot of hiking so it was up our alley. Woolly has packed his trunk; he made so much mess and left everything on the floor so we had to repack it! We have come to our last hours in Turkey (for now!). Last night started out well. Ian and I went out for a meal, we were met with chaos when we got back! Woolly says – HOME ALONE – it’s the last night, what did they expect!!!!!! Ok have to admit I might have gone over the top, probably shouldn’t have nicked all of ian’s beer and Jo’s nuts! and as for drinking all of the wine out on the balcony!!!!! I think I got shouted at when they got back! But for some reason my memory’s a little fuzzy! We were not impressed and needless to say Woolly is grounded. BAD MAMMOTH!!! Woolly ... read more

Having spent an interesting night in the Dianara Hotel, Kemer – the town closed down completely at 6pm and the bar in the hotel at 7pm!!!!! We were presented with a good Turkish breakfast which included a pastry filled with chilli scrambled eggs, different but not bad at all. Packing everything into the car we drove the 15km to Phaselis. Turning off the D400 we entered a wonderful pine forest. Paying 8TL each (approximately £3.20 GBP) we continued into the forest until being greeted by a sandy bay. Woolly says – it was lush, really beautiful. Through the trees I could see pieces of the ruined city with dappled light surrounding them and complete quiet – well except for me! Ian and Jo bought me a leaflet which told me that Phaselis was built around the ... read more

Taking the D400 in an easterly direction we opened the car windows and sped towards Perge. Passing hundreds of road side sellers with succulent strawberries and huge bags of oranges there was plenty to see. From the hotel complexes to the small one room dwellings and the lone cows on any piece of grass. The traffic lights fascinated Woolly. Woolly says – They count down!!!! When red they count down to when they turn to green and vice versa, will have to recommend them to Mr Cameron, it would save a lot of road rage!!!! Taking the turning to Perge we rounded a bend to the most splendid sight of an amphitheatre, pulling into the car park we could see remains in all directions. Paying our 15TL each (approximately £6.20 GBP), expensive for Turkey, we entered ... read more

Heading eastwards along the D400 we decided to spend the day looking at Aspendos and Side, two of biggest tourist attractions in the Antalya region. Woolly says – A chance to take to the stage??? Turning right off the main road, we followed the sign posts to Aspendos, pulling into the car park. Woolly didn’t look all together impressed. Woolly says – It appeared to be a large wall with nothing else of course I was disappointed, not a stage in sight. Paying 10TL each (approximately £4.10 GBP) we went through a dark covered archway and there in front of us……. Woolly says – a HUGE stage area, I got very excited and started to warm up my vocal chords. To the rear of the stage the walls rose behind with alcoves where sculptures would have ... read more

Sitting proudly on the peninsula of Alanya sits the castle. With the sun shining and not a cloud in the sky we set of to explore. Although possible to walk up to (quite a big walk!) Woolly refused to walk up and down so we picked up a taxi which took only a few minutes to arrive at the castle gates. Woolly says – I’m sure all this walking isn’t good for me! It was a fun ride to the top going round the bends at speed being hardened to the mountain roads now it was a doddle! The view was spectacular, looking at Alanya spread out below us with clear blue seas and the castle in front of us, worth a photo or two. Paying 10TL (approximately £4.10 GBP) to enter we walked up the ... read more

With some clouds in the sky and a light drizzle of rain we continued on our route back to Alanya. Having looked at the map we spotted the location of Syedra. Woolly says – this looked like a really good idea, WRONG, turning off the main road we headed towards a mountain in the distance. With the road becoming a dirt track, narrower and narrower with a huge drop down the mountainside Ian tried to keep going, it proved impossible and with Jo clinging to her seat and me clinging to Jo we managed to turn round and descend back to normality and less terrifying driving conditions. It’s a shame we couldn’t make it to the Syedra ruins as it’s believed to date back to the 7th century but even an intrepid Mammoth has his breaking ... read more

Waking to the sun streaming through the window and a glorious view of Kizkalesi Castle was a joy to behold. Woolly says – had a slight headache, not sure why!!!!! We arrived on the hotel veranda for a beautiful if simple breakfast with bread rolls to die for, having cost 72TL for a night including breakfast (approximately £29 GBP) it was a bargain, the owners were lovely and very sweet and the view sitting in the sun was a great start to the day.
