An old wine house, Turkish music in the background, a glass of red and a head full of memories. What to write for my final blog? I could reminisce about the places I’ve seen, the experiences I’ve had or even write about the history, food or culture. I could write about the people. It’s the people who I have met and shared this journey with that have provided the best memories. You ‘people’, you know who you are. You have questioned my logic, challenged my beliefs, shared your stories, given words of wisdom and touched my heart. It’s these connections that I have treasured the most. ‘Back to the real world’ so they say. Turns out I’ve actually been living in the real world; I encourage you to try it sometime. My final story is of ... read more

We left Antalya at 2:00pm after shopping at the square and little shops all over then wandering the town and walking with a full view of the Mediterranean. We then got in the van for a long ride to the next town. When we got there it was about 6:00pm so we got settled in and went to an all you can eat buffet at a 4 star hotel. It was about a 20 minute walk away. They had a good meal set and I had lots of food. After paying we went home and played backgammon till 10:00pm. Good night snake wangler... read more

We had a really nice breakfast. Then went to Antalya. It took five hours with stops now an again. Once we arrived we checked in to our hotel with was really nice. Mom and me had a room with a double and a single bed. I got the single and mom on the double. We then went with the group to a nice restaurant. Ibo told us some good places to go. Then 7 of us went to the beach, while Francisco went to the museum. I went in for a swim. The water was cold but nice. We then headed back to the hotel when the sun started to set. We then all went for supper at the castle restaurant. I got deep fried mussels that were real tasty. Then we split up; some went ... read more

Woolly says – The days pass so pleasantly here, sitting on the balcony watching the huge cruise liners arriving in the harbour and all those lucky people getting to sample the wonderful resort of Alanya. Jo and Ian have finished painting the apartment ready for next year’s visitors, I have of course helped by directing operations and telling them where spots have been missed, not that they thank me for this. Woolly is as helpful as a chocolate fire guard and keeping his paws out of the paint has been more of a challenge than actually painting every wall in sight. Having realised that I was still missing my thick waterproof winter coat we took a day off from the emulsion and headed to our friends in the hills behind Mahmultar to rummage through the garage ... read more

We were now headed for Antayla on the south coast of Turkey. We drove along a range of mountains that at first were sparsely cover with small twisted trees and dry brown grasses until they rose to sheer rock faces. As we moved farther south, the tree cover grew denser. We saw apple orchards and stretches of thick pine. The mountains grew taller and sharper, no longer soft sided ancient and worn, these were sharp thrusting rock with the road winding through valleys, turning corners to beautiful vistas. Then we met a mountain range running perpendicular to the one we had been following. Once we crossed over this range the climate changed dramatically. Now trees were green, not leafless. We could see the oranges on the branches. There were palm trees. This was the Mediterranean. Antayla ... read more

Having discarded our paint brushes and given into Woolly’s nagging we made good our promise to take him to Alanya Museum to see what had been excavated from Syedra and other ancient cities from around the area. Woolly says – About time to, I’ve had to wait over a week! I was up and ready for action by 7.30am, the lazy bones were eventually ready by 11am (I’m recommending early nights for the pair of them!) The twenty minute walk to Cleopatra Beach in the sunshine was most agreeable and we took a few minutes rest on one of the funky ship benches to watch the many people using the outside gym. These gyms run all along the sea front and are constantly in use, keep fit in the sun, not a bad idea. Woolly says ... read more

Woolly says – I could feel the excitement building as we approached the fifth of November. Not because of any plot to blow up the Houses of Parliament or because the nation wants to scare the animal population of the UK with loud bangs and pops but because it is the most important day of the year – MY BIRTHDAY! Having high expectations for his special day Woolly made short work of opening his presents and eating a huge slice of cake. Woolly says – No Ferrari, no yacht, no private jet……. I got clothes! CLOTHES!! What’s going on?? Okay the cake was yummy but it took me an hour to get the chocolate off my tusks! Finally we were able to load him into Ollie for his day out to celebrate. The plan – Find ... read more

Turkey, my new love!!! It's been so long since my last blog that I'm going to cram 5 weeks into this one. After this blog, there will only be one final entry to go. Oh dear, so sad! Turkey is a place where; Smoking is almost more popular then breathing Old men hangout in coffeehouses, play board games and drink tea, not coffee. Everything is so old that cities have been built on cities of past civilisations, and Money can buy you anything, everything is negotiable. I really love Turkey! My Turkey experience started with a whirling tour which was followed by a 500km trek called the Lycian Way and finished with a week in the old city in Antalya. WHIRLING TURKEY - THE TOUR First, I must say, I hate tours. While tours are great ... read more

Woolly says – we needed to stock up on food and snacks, a trip to Migros (one of the Turkish supermarkets that sell alcohol!) was on the cards. I thought that was it for the day but Jo and Ian had other ideas and took me on a detour to Green Canyon. Green Canyon is a huge tourist attraction and all the tour operators offer this trip, the pictures looked impressive and with the fifth highest Dam in Turkey there was no stopping us. Woolly says – we disappeared down the same back roads as a couple of days ago and kept going. We knew we were going in the right direction as we started to meet up with a range of different tours and jeep trips who were happily bouncing all over the roads spraying ... read more

With the sun shining brightly and the waves caressing the sand we started Monday with a short trot up the beach to get internet and Skype Birthday Daughter Zoe. We flashed the sunny view at her but for some reason she didn’t seem impressed! Woolly says – I did ask her what the weather was like in Aberystwyth but apparently she hadn’t opened her curtains yet, lazy girl I’ve been up for hours…..apparently! Heading back to camp we collected Ollie from his slumbers under the tree and set off down the D400 whilst looking for the signposts for Alara. We seem to have lost James our sat nav and it seemed very quiet without his Auzzie twang to lead the way. We need to look into the sat nav situation but todays jaunt was easy to ... read more
