Day 12 Thursday 7th October 2010 and Friday 8th 77 miles The weather is becoming cooler and we are wearing our jackets for the first half hour until the sun rises higher and we have to work harder since we go down hill for 10 miles. Today was a bit hilly, but more down than up since we end up at sea level on the Med. We pass a dried up lake with goats grazing on what little vegetation it has to offer watched over by a very small woman with a weather beaten face. This was followed by a climb to the top of the Avaln Beli at 1105m. Now it was all downhill for miles and miles - fantastic - don't use your brakes, it is a waste of energy, wears out your rims ... read more

Okay dudes and dudettes! It has been awhile since our last blog and we apologize for any inconvienience that this has caused. We are now in Antalya Turkey. The last time that we blogged we had just arrived in Istanbul so I will start the story there. Day 1 in Istanbul we checked out the Topkapi palace and the Blue Mosque. The Palace is surrounded by a nice big park, but once inside you get to check out the real bling. The place is full of golden jewellery and jewel encrusted thrones, flasks, crowns, armour etc. There is even an 86 carat diamond (called the spoon maker's diamond) on display. Andrea fell in love with this particular rock :) Within the palace there were also muslim religious artifacts and other cool stuff. As for the Mosque... ... read more

Traveling alone as you can imagine can definitely have its ups and downs. Every traveler that has set off on this kind of adventure can attest to this. I usually blog about the ups... flexibility, freedom, the requirement to put yourself out there and meet new people, the variety, etc... those are the ups! Then there are the downs. There are the times when you’re in your own hotel room instead of a dorm with no one to talk to for days at a time... there are times when you must be THAT person in a restaurant sitting solo while everyone around you is laughing and mingling in couples or groups... and there are times when you’re the only English speaking person on a bus full of locals chatting amongst themselves. As Monty mentioned of his ... read more

After a sad departure from the boat, the whole group of us checked into the same hotel (we weren't done partying yet) in Olympos. Olympos is a bit of a backpacker's paradise, in that it is a great place to chill out in your treehouse room, drink beers with like-minded travellers at communal low tables, chill on the beach, rock climb, hike, cliff dive and any number of activities. Really, after doing essentially nothing but party, swim and sleep on the boat, we were in pure chillout mode and spent many hours in the communal areas relaxing, drinking and playing cards... We also swam in the ocean, jumped from ~10m cliffs and spent awhile relaxing on the beach to move around a bit... We did manage to squeeze in one nice (and very hot) hike up ... read more

Meia hora ... read more

The tranquil hill town of Kas was a far cry from the muddy street of Olympos which greeted our dolmus minivan on Wednesday afternoon. For 3 TYL you are dumped at a highway stop and shuffled into another van for the transfer downhill. Aside from flooding 2 weeks prior it was in reasonable shape although the bulldozers were at work in spades (ha ha)! around the ruins site. To enter Olympos involves a steep road down into a narrow valley where many treehouses are built on the river bed or nearby. Citrus trees abound giving some earth stability but I did wonder if the creaky platforms around everywhere would support the continuing shoulder season tourists weight! After a chatty and stormy night with Aussie, British, Turkish and German company I managed to get up early to ... read more

Today was the best travel day ever in Turkey! We left on an Anamur Zafer Co bus at 10am in the front two seats. It was a super nice bus and only a 6 hour ride to Antalya. The buses in Turkey are usually amazing and have comfy seats and offer free çay, water, traditional turkish hand sanitizer and snacks. We made it to Antalya and a small Dolmuş was waiting to take people to Olympos. The dolmuş dropped us off in the Olympos Valley but not at our hostel. We waited at this Olimpos Restaurant for more than two hours and it was getting dark and we were getting a bit nervous b/c we did not have reservations. The dolmuş finally came and we arrived at 7pm just in time for dinner at Turkman's Treehouses. ... read more

I'm Deliriously Tired. So, Brad and I both puked on what was a 15 hour bus journey, with three transfers, back from the Mediterranean to Istanbul. Turns out we got a little too cocky- four days of drinking random spring water in the middle of nowhere, no problem, but drinking tap water back in what seemed to be civilization (STORES? Tourists? where the hell are we?!) got us both relatively ill. We are both back in relatively fighting form, we're back in Istanbul, we just made the most delicious dinner anyone has ever eaten so cheaply in Istanbul, and I'm feeling good- except that I think I'm so tired the room is spinning a little bit. In any case, the hike of ours was EXTRAORDINARY. Literally the most beautiful views, the most random and desperate side ... read more

“Travel and change of place impart new vigor to the mind.” - Seneca At first I thought, along with most people I'm sure, that Mt. Olympos was in Greece. It was, after all, where Zeus and the rest of the gods supposedly resided according to Greek mythology. But it turns out there's one in Turkey as well, just spelled differently. The sleepy town of Olympos lies nestled in a forested mountain region a few miles from the ocean. While there are plenty of opportunities to mountain climb, swim, or explore Roman ruins we were more interested in two other things. The first thing we wanted to do was stay in a tree house. Huh? Yes, I know it sounds kooky, but for some reason the hotel owners here decided that the tried and true method ... read more

We started our day by visiting the ancient ruin of Perge. It was incredibly hot today in Antalya and Nessie and I decided to take public transit and then walk to the ruin. We were both soaked with our own sweat by the time we got to Perge. Turkish buses are not set up with enough ventilation (ie. windows) let alone AC. Despite that, I really enjoyed seeing the ruins. It would have been awesome to be one of the rich inhabitants of Perge because once a week you would get to visit the baths. The baths were set up like hammams/spas where you would do a little exercise, have a bath and then a slave would scrape a layer of skin off of you and rub you with olive oil. Skin cancer wasn't really on ... read more
