Our travels in Turkey began in the central region known as Cappadocia. The landscape there is crazy mad - built on volcanic soil and eroding ınto pinnacles and fairy chimneys. Where nature left off, humans have taken over and carved the pinnacles into rock hotels, thousands of churches, and pigeon houses. We spent several days wandering around in the hills near Goreme. After some hefty bus rides from Syria, it was great to be free and on foot. We only had a simple hand drawn map which conveniently chose not to include every valley. Unsurprisingly, we spent a fair portion of time in the middle of nowhere, crashing through fields and occasionally popping up in people's vege patches. We saw churches carved out of rock with vivid frescoes still in tact. We also visited a vast ... read more

Nessie and I are at an internet cafe before dinner with her family friend John and his archeology grad students who are meeting us here in Antalya. Today was a sweaty hot day. Im sure its nothing compared to what I am going to experience in SEA but ıts still really hot. Went went to a giant ruin today called Termassos. It was very cool to see but not quite what I expected. There was a lot less structurally there than I had anticipated and it was up high ın the moutains with lots of trees and a dirt trail. I dont know why I expected an entire ancient cıty to still be standing...needless to say I was kınd of surprised. I was mostly frustrated by the fact that I made my footwear choice based on ... read more

Today Nessie and I had an easy start to the day. Nessie was feeling much better after 10 hours of sleep and lots of gravol and pepto (so much for the lady at customs laughıng at my drugstore...it all came in handy). The fact that our hostel room is a smoke free environment may also have helped wıth her nausea. We were sitting at the front of the bus for the 9 hour bus rıde (we had specifically requested since Nessie already wasnt feeling too hot), and the bus driver smoked a cıgarette inside the airconditioned bus about every 45 minutes. We smelt like we had been at a bingo hall when we got off the bus...Turks smoke everywhere. We headed to the Antalya Museum where we saw many sculptures that have been restored from the ... read more

5/27/09 Family: --- Answer to mystery question from last blog: WE ARE IN TURKEY. That was the Turkish flag. The lucky winner will be receiving some Turkish Taffy and an Evil Eye in the mail (unless customs abducts it). The evil eye is everywhere and keeps evil spirits away. ---------- We have arrived in Turkey (5/13/09). We took a short ferry from Rhodes to Marmaris. Customs asked us carefully about when we left the United States and where we have been. Eventually we realized that they were interested in our potential exposure to Swine Flu. Retrospectively, we were told that customs uses infrared on the entering crowd to wean out who may have a fever. --- Other things that we noticed included that the land had more trees on it. We also noticed that women are ... read more

On the face of it, Antalya had it all. Undeniably stunning, its location was good for the Romans to use its nice little harbour as a trading hub, needing only a few low key defences around it. Wrapping around the harbour like an amphitheatre, the streets testify to the periods of development since, with some beautiful Ottoman buildings, giving the historic district a lovely focal point. Walking around the harbour was slow going - as every angle was easy on the eye and hard on the camera, with sparkling turquiose water leading to snow covered ranges forming its mountainous outlook. But like a beautifully adorned model, the warm heart of this town (if it still exists) was carefully concealed. Dealings with hostels and shop keepers were cold experiences, and people preferred to embrace their lives rather ... read more

Saturday, 17th January, 2009. We set the alarm for seven. Breakfast was from seven thirty and as we were both going to have something we both washed and dressed. Breakfast was a self service buffet and we had cereals and toasts. We could have had eggs but didn't bother. Back to the room, gathered our stuff and down to reception. Paid the bill, asked for the car and it was there by the time we were ready to leave. The reception was very helpful with directions, of how to get out of Bodrum and gave us a local map. It was now eight fifteen. Our ultimate destination is Tasucu, but we know that that is not possible in one day. RAC services says it is 500 miles and takes 14 hours. We had little knowledge of ... read more

..well really only in the museum! Its amazing how we all came to be such prudes when our distant ancestors had naked statues around all the time. Its also amazing how good they were at carving and that the work has endured for so long. I visited the Antalya museum today and WOW! Its the best one i have been to. A huge gallery of statues and another of sarcophagai..is that plural for sarcophagus? Plus an exhibit showing how the nomadic tribes lived. Very well done and most of the texts were in several languages, including English. Antalya is a really old city and the old part is kinda like the old part of Istanbul, except less traffic. They still drive crazy here. My hotel is very nice and the food is yummy. IF the chef ... read more
