We popped home to our hotel and then headed on the tram down to Eminonu for a fish sandwich, a corn cob and a ferry ticket. We ignored all the touts trying to get us to go on their Bosphorus tours and went on the public ferry. The 1:45pm sailing was not too crowded. It takes about 1 1/2 hours to sail all the way up the Bosphorus, with about five stops, passing some great sites including the Dolmabahce Palace, and a fortress guarding the narrowest part of the strait, beautiful villages, etc. It was a little hazy and grey for the first part of the trip, but by the time we returned the skies has cleared. At the far end, we disembarked and had about two hours to spare. bought an ice cream and walked ... read more

Day 8 Today our plan is to visit the Spice Market and the Grand Bazaar. This Hilton also has a nice executive lounge that provides breakfast with a beautiful view. We wish we could say the breakfast was as beautiful as the view, but oh well, it fills our tummies. Back in the room I am not sure what to wear. I have heard this country is a mix of old world and new world traditions of how women are to dress. The guide books state that to enter the mosques women must cover past their knees and shoulders, but I am not sure what is acceptable on the regular streets. I settle on capri pants with a v-neck tee. Everything about me still screams American. We change some money at the front desk and grab ... read more

Day 7 Tonight we leave for Istanbul. We will be sad to leave this beautiful island. Most of the day we hangout having lunch, drinking iced coffee's, and lounging at the beach. We found a shop selling the notorious 2 litre glass boot and have to purchase one. I do not think we will be drinking beer from it again but who knows! In the evening we return to Le Gourmet for our final dinner on Rhodos. The hostess/owner Maria is sad to see us depart the island and so are we. We have an assortment of appetizers, giant prawns, and lamb, a fitting farewell dinner. A taxi takes us to the airport and we ready the airplane for the other passengers. The flight to Istanbul takes 58 mins. By the time we arrive we are ... read more

We got up and had to rush a bit at breakfast :( but it was all for a good reason. We were taking the beggar’s ferry down the Bosporus that morning and had to be there around 9:30 for the 10:15 cruise. We had already walked down to where the ferry boats depart trying to find the entrance to the Tram, so we kind of knew where we were going. . . .kind of (sense of direction still has not improved). We go to buy the tickets for the ferry, and Dad tells me what to say when ordering the tickets (I am pretty sure I butchered the whole thing but the nice Turkish girl understood what I was saying) We got to the entry and two guards were there to look at our ticket and ... read more

me and dad took a plane over to istanbul and played far cry on the way whilst snacking on crisps and chocolate ( i got the lions share = ) when we landed, dad and me walked to the bus stop and waited for ages until it got ready to go. when we got to the city we had a look around for the tram station (which we found eventually), instead of taking the tram we decided to get these amazing, spectaculas and wounderful fish sandwhiches that i loved and walked.after an hour or so we found a hostel (yay). then we went to a giant market called the bazzar and it was a complete let down said dad it was just like an ordinary shopping mall! so after the giant let down dad decided to ... read more

Today was our cruise on the Bosphorus day with a visit to Dolmabahce Palace. It was a glorious day to be on the water. The sky was bright blue, the sun was shining and the water was deep blue with choppy white waves splashing against the shore. We has high hopes that today's trip (by the same company as the last one that was not so pleasant) would be more successful. We were not disappointed. The first thing I noticed was the preponderance of huge red Turkish flags flying at half staff. Since I can't read the newspapers or understand the TV I was concerned that something terrible had happened somewhere and I was totally unaware of it. The guide told us that today was the anniversary of the death of Ataturk. I wrote a little ... read more

Before I begin to tell you the secrets to being a good traveler I want to remind you all to go to Val's website to see her pictures ( so far) of this trip and, if you are really interested, several of our past trips. www.flickr.com/photos/maumus/ I know you will enjoy them as she is an excellent photographer. To be honest I don't add them because without pictures it makes me work harder as a writer. Also, the website for our hotel here is : www.stonehotelistanbul.com We eat breakfast in an 800 year old stone dungeon. How cool is that? Many of you have heard my rules for traveling:1. Never stand when you can sit. 2. Never sit when you can lie down. 3. Never pass up an opportunity to use the WC ,and 4. Always ... read more

Merhaba (hello in Turkish) you lot! Here is what has been happening. This keyboard is a little strange so forgive me if this reads funny. I leave Athens on Monday the 21st June (day 36) rested up and partied out. Keen to get back on the road. I leave my friends place early afternoon and decide to camp in Nea Makri for the night. As i leave the Athens area, perhaps because i am heading more north, the weather is cooler and there is rain too. Which i didnt expect to find in Greece in June. The weather was a good thing because the route to Thessaloniki took me across some crazy climbs which would have been unholy in a higher temp. The landscape en route to Thessaloniki was either dead flat plains or mountainous terrain. ... read more

Our first visit to Turkey was an awesome experience. This blog will share my experience of our first visit to Istanbul. I also write for the Associated Content website and have posted an article about this trip titled url= http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/2790700/discover_turkey_a_new_vacation_destination.html?cat=16Need A New Vacation Destination? Discover Turkey. If you like this blog you will want to read the article because it contains a lot more detail and history of this interesting city. In 2006 my wife and I planned our first family vacation to Istanbul. She is Turkish and wanted to show me her homeland. The opportunity to visit such an ancient land fascinated me, so I conducted a little research prior to our journey there. I did this to learn more about her country, which I knew absolutely nothing about and also to map out all ... read more

On October 17th, as we pulled out of the driveway in Pennsylvania, the snow was falling lightly; yes snow in early October - must be global warming. Its not that I don’t like snow, but our golf season usually goes on to early December. After we got above 1600 feet in the Pocono Mountains, it was really coming down, even though the temperature was in the high-30’s. As we traveled on through New Jersey and into New York the snow changed to rain and finally stopped. We finally rolled into Terminal 7 at JFK airport and checked in with Iberia Airlines. After checking in, we noticed that our seats had been changed on the second flight (Madrid to Istanbul) from row 17 to row 4 - business class looked like it was in the offing. The ... read more
