We bussed down nearly 3000m to sea level and wandered into the small fishing town of Byblos. We were promptly disappointed to find out that it was in fact more expensive to stay here than even Beirut, but we decided to stick it out for one night. After wandering around the old city (old is so relative in the Middle East because it could mean 40, 400 or over 4000 years old!), shot some amazing sunset photos at the old Crusader castle ruins right by the ocean and relaxed with a nice fresh fish (Dorado) dinner! At night, we decided to hit the town and ran into a joint stag/stagette for a couple and had a tasty beer with the party. In the morning, we decided to pick up our roots again and head north to ... read more

We pulled into Baalbek, amidst a little military presence and all sorts of Hezbollah propaghanda, and were promptly struck up by a enterprising fellow to buy a Hezbollah t-shirt. I thought this a little ironic! We wandered the town with our cameras and shot a few photos of interesting sights. After a few minutes, I was stopped by a guy (that was driving a bus full of children!) and he demanded to see my pictures. I showed him, and he seemed to be comfortable with the delapidated buildings and random people I had photographed to allow me on my merry way... Other than that, this was any other middle eastern town! The ruins in Baalbek were very well preserved, and had 6 of the tallest (granite) columns I have seen yet and some very intricate carvings ... read more

After a long and interest border experience coming into Beirut, Felipe and I were looking to relax in a cheap hotel somewhere. Unfortunately, we discovered the not much of anything is cheap in Beirut! After checking into our hotel, we went for one of many walks along the corniche (seawall). Beirut is an interesting city in that there are very liberal people (miniskirts and fancy clothes, etc) living in harmony with people in traditional garb (niqabs, burkahs and robes). But for the most part, it was hard for me to ignore the opulence and excess of this place. With fancy cars and huge SUV´s everywhere, it reminded me too much of many of the things I dislike about my own home city of Calgary. It seemed that people here were too considered with status, which is ... read more

Skiing in Lebanon was absolutely a risky experience considering that I've never really skied before I went to Lebanon. I did however prepared myself for some dangerous consequences, like a possibly twisting a leg or two or end up with broken angkle. Our ride took an hour from the city of Beirut, all the way to the mounain top. One thing I've noticed about the city is that some of their old typical ruined buildings have bullet holes. This country was unmistakably in the middle of the war zone as well as facing some troubles between their neighbouring countries. Someone once told me that Beirut was another version of Northern Ireland. Personally, even with all the troubles, I find this place very special. I love the food, I love the way the modern people of Beirut ... read more

So I'm now writing from Cairo - having been back for a week now! Spring break officially ended this evening at 5pm - after 19 days off - its hard gettin back into the swing of things of school, hence why I'm currently writing this blog during my International Refugee Law class (its ok - we're just goin over the answers to the mid-term). Lebanon and Syria were, again, nothing short of fantastic. Really had an amazing time in both countries and am looking forward to returning soon! I brought back 3 bottles of Lebanese wine - 1 white (already gone) and am now trying to savor and drink sparingly the red wine - Egyptian wine is just BAD! I had a fabulous birthday. My friends threw me a surprise party - was totally surprised - ... read more

We'd decided to do the Lebanon side trip with a 'Why not?' kind of attitude. Already so close, it seemed like it would be a shame not to. We therefore had little knowledge nor expectation of what we'd make of Lebanon. Setting out at the crack of dawn that morning for the drive to the historical sight of Baalbek, our lack of expectation made to the delight of Baalbek all the more astounding. We knew we'd be seeing 'some ruins' at the sight. But oh my! This sight made so many of the other Roman ruins we've seen pale in comparison to the splendour and magnificence on display. It was THAT good. I'd thought I'd seen a lot to this point but apparently not. Baalbek’s temples were simply awesome. There are no other words to describe ... read more

When i was young i lived on a council estate.. If your house or block was bad they said it looked like Beirut. That was not meant to be a compliment. But it was a sign of the times in the 80's for both me and Beirut. To reverse that slander i had to write and tell the world that it is worth every accolade you could find, it truly is a city of contrasts. First of all everyone has invaded. So it has a proud history of survival and it has borrowed and adopted a little of each of its visitors.. I can give you a history lesson but Greeks to Venetians to Romans to Persians to crusaders to Arabs to the Syrians and north Africans it has seen them all, even the French up ... read more
