• "Your dream has come true" • "Many people wanted to do the same" • "Aren't you afraid?" • "How do you gone to heat during the winter" • "You need to fix/do/paint/…" They are all wrong. My dream is just to enjoy my life, that they would be interesting and that I will exploit all the resource I got in me. For now I found all those in building the Inn and bringing tourist into the old city of Nazareth. When there will be 10 more guesthouses in the Old City, I'm not sure if I'll be around… There is nothing to fear but fear himself, forgot who said that but as true as ever. It's demanding constant work to keep the fear aside but it's something that one can deal with if he decides ... read more

A miracle as happened in Nazareth, A 30 people workshop is taking place in the Fauzi Azar Inn. The Inn that was open only 4 month ago can now accommodate 30 people in 6 exotic rooms, we cater 3 meals a day in what use to be the biggest bakery in the north part of Palestine and is now the Inn's dinning room… there are 2 conference rooms, wireless internet connection, roof top bar and all that in 4 month!!! But more even more important Shlomit is now my legal wife, After 10 years of partnership and 5 month into the pregnancy we decided to make it "official" and in the first day of September got married in Cyprus with just the two of us attending the civilian ceremony. I was waiting long time to write ... read more

Regardless of what is happening now in Israel I still think it's one of the most amazing places full of culture and special places. The Old City is such a mix of people living side by side and the buildings are also fascinating. I spent a couple of days near Qumran as well and I found this place has a real vibrant energy and the views towards the mountains/hills are breathtaking. ... read more

This past weekend was absolutely wonderful! The enitre department of overseas studies (about 95 students from around the world) took a trip to Tzfat, Mt. Hermon, and Banias. Tzfat is the city of Jewish mysticism, and one of the four traditional Jewish holy cities. It was clear walking through the streets that there is something special about the area. It is nestled between mountains and filled with artists, musicians, and history. We camped overnight under the stars at a place called Nebi Chazuri. The next morning, we woke up early and began a full day hike along the border of the Golan Heights and the Galilee. We climbed on one of the lower ridges of Mount Hermon (the tallest mountain in Israel), and there we saw the remains of a Muslim fortress built around 1100 CE. ... read more

Hello all! After all of our orientations, tours, and introductions, the semester officially began Sunday. I have registered for Hebrew, Modern Standard Arabic, Rabbinic Literature, and Contemporary Israeli History and Society. I have the option to change my schedule around during the next week, but after going through almost a week of classes, I find myself very satisfied and excited. My Hebrew class is intense and very challenging. It meets eight hours per week, but the teacher seems great. Rabbinic Literature is dynamic and has an extra two hour lab section in addition to the regular course in which we work through texts in pairs. Contemporary Israeli History and Society starts off as being not so contemporary at all and we went over two thousand years back into history during the first class. The teacher is ... read more

I am now back at the dorms at Haifa University, but I spent last week north of Haifa at a Kibbutz called Ein Gev. From there, we traveled around a lot in the region of Israel called the Golan Heights. On the first day of the trip, we visited a community called Har Khalutz, which means in English, Pioneer Mountain. It is a pluralistic community founded in the 1980s by upper middle class folks from around the world but mostly North America who were looking to settle in Israel--it was very pretty. In the following few days, we did a lot of hiking. We hiked up a mountain called Gamlah, derived from the Hebrew word for camel because it looks like a camel's hump. Gamlah is home to one of the oldest synagogue's. Historians say it ... read more

Getting out of Jordan required a 1 pound departure tax. Why can't they add that to the visa? After all everyone is going to leave eventually. The border posts between Jordan and Israel are a few meters apart. Territory is king here for access for the Red sea. Leaving Jordan it was a friendly "Thanks for your visit, hope to see you again" from the guard. And then the Israeli female guard said "Hello. Welcome to Israel. Enjoy your stay Mr. Couch" Almost right. Next was Israeli customs control, where another female officer took me aside and asked me all sorts of questions. My travels, family, job(!), destinations, money, education, reasons for coming and roll on deodorant were discussed. It could have been a speed dating evening, except she didn't tell me anything about her, a ... read more

I can't believe that it was one week ago that I left my humble abode in Chicago--this week has gone by so quickly! The weekend in Israel is Friday afternoon through Saturday, but since classes are yet to have started, our weekend this week really began on Thursday. Friday morning we woke up at 3:30 am to hike into the Carmel National Forests right behind campus up to a great look out spot for watching the sunrise. We were guided by an old man who has always lived on and around the mountain and feels as though he is a part of it. He was fascinating. We walked back to the dorms at about 7am at which point I went back to sleep for another four hours. Friday evening we went to a Shabbat service and ... read more

Today has been yet another day jam-packed with new people and places. We visited the Bahai Gardens, which were absolutely amazing and a mosque of the Ahmediyyan sect of Islam. We ate lunch at a nice restaurant and continued from there to the Leo Baeck Education Center where I will be spending a lot of time this year. Leo Baeck houses a pre-school, kindergarten, junior high, and high school along with a synagogue, gym, swimming pool, library, meeting rooms, offices, gardens, and all sorts of other imporant parts of the community. Tonight is unscheduled and many of us are planning on leaving campus to explore the city just a bit. It should be a fun!... read more
