After breakfast we left Tel Aviv to travel north to the ancient city of Caesarea, once the seat of Roman rule in the Middle East, built around 40 BC by Herod the Great: a Jewish king. It’s obvious that Herod had quite an ego based on the size of his port. He created a magnificent Roman city including an amphitheater, gymnasium, baths, a huge artificially protected port and a sophisticated water system that flowed from a spring 18 miles away. We even had a chance to wade through an excavated section of the underground water tunnel. We ate lunch in the quaint clean town of Zichron Ya’akov and visited the home of a Jewish 007 (a spy ring for the British in1917). We are spending the night in a hotel on Kibbutz HaGoshrim… the Catskills of ... read more

July 6th-7th, 2007, This was a great weekend. Stav, my friend from Birthright (a free trip/tour of Israel for all those not in-the-know), took me to the Northern part of Israel for a weekend of camping and hiking. I was the American guest of her, her boyfriend, and her friends Dan and Dana. Some other people met us later at night, after our hike. Everyone was really nice, and we all had a good time. We started with a hike in Nachalat Zaki/Zaki River. I wish I could have taken pictures, but for the better part of the hike the water was thigh high. For other parts we had to swim. It was awesome. From there we went to a nearby river where we busted out the shampoo and soap and cleaned ourselves up. After that ... read more

Today was another great day. We began the day again with another hike to the Banias river. The waters here are a crystal clear blue colour and are beautiful and clean. We hiked from the Banias waterfall to the source at a spring beside some ancient ruins from the 1st century CE. Afterwards, we hiked back, and then drove up Mount Hermon to the Nimrod Fortress. This fortress is one of the best-preserved ruins in all of Israel and the Middle East. Later, we took a scenic route around the entire Golan and then stopped at a Druze village along the way for lunch. Josh and I had falafel which was excellent - Noah stuck to pita & hummus. We continued our trek through the Golan, and then drove along the Eastern shore of the Kineret ... read more

Today was a great day! We began the day with a hike part-way through a river - Nahal Gilabon. The trail was well marked but we decided to wade through part of the river as per Noah's directions. At the end of the hike, we ended up at a beautiful 10m high waterfall that fell into a small pond. The water was freezing but we decided to go swimming anyway and had a great time. After the hike we were pretty tired, but continued on to see Tzfat. We weren't very impressed - there wasn't much happening in the town, and the old Artists' Quarter was almost deserted. In the evening, we drove to the Eastern shore of the Kineret, and followed an off-road trail to a spot along the shore. We weren't the only ones ... read more

Today we got the car!!! Yos drove us to Netanya around noon and we picked up the car that Ilan had arranged for us. It's a brand new 2007 Nissan Micra, great small car. Once we were on the road, we headed up to the Galil to drive through Nazareth. This was mostly for Josh, but Noah and I had never been there either. Just before arriving in Nazareth we took a wrong turn and ended up in a small Arab village called Iqsal. It didn't take us long to figure out that we were in the wrong place. After a few strange looks, we headed back out to the main road and quickly found our way to Nazareth. Unfortunately, it was Sunday, and almost everything that we wanted to see was closed, but it was ... read more

Today was a slightly boring day for me - I have been to both of these places previously, but neither Josh nor Noah had been, so we visited them. We still had trouble getting the car so Ori took us and his kids on a day trip. I was still sick at this point so no time was really wasted. HAPPY BIRTHDAY AVIVA!!!... read more

Said Humous in Akko, a place to never forget Guy en Morit had decided not to come with us to the south to Petra, so we decided to stay a day or two more to spent their weekend together on Friday and Saturday. Instead we went to the north, to the old town of Akko. Quite some history in this town, It's been in hands of Alexander the Great, the Egyptian Ptolemites, the Syrian Seleucids, the Arabs, the Crusaders, the Mamluks, and Al-Jazzar, who's decrees shaped the Old Akko as it exist today. These days the Old Akko is left in the Arab hands by the Jews. It's a beautyfull little town at the Mediterranean Sea, still surrounded by city walls. After a few hours drive from Tel Aviv, the first thing Guy took us ... read more

Part 2... Day 3- Today we drove to Zfat, in the Galilee. Zfat is one of the holiest cities in Judaism, after Jerusalem and Hebron. It is a beautiful little town on the top of a mountain, and is home to the Jewish mystics of Kabbalah. It also happens to be my most favorite place in all of Israel. You can just feel these special, spiritual, mystical powers flowing all around you. As a very religious city, where Kabbalah was developed in the 16th century, there are dozens of small synagogues, mostly after specific rabbis. We went to a few of the more important ones. First was the Abuhav Synagogue, named for Rabbi Yitzhak Abuhav, a famous rabbi from Spain who lived in the 15th century. Abuhav wanted to make it to Israel before he ... read more

Well, its finally come to the end. My 6 month internship program is officially over. I can’t believe it, I really can’t. As usual, 6 months has gone so fast. For the last week of our program, we had a 4 day trip to the north. It was full of emotions, especially me, only days after my cousin passed away, and just the overwhelming situation of the program ending, and friends leaving. But let me talk about the amazing trip we had before I get all mushy. We left Sunday morning and started driving north up the coast. Our first stop was some caves in the Carmel mountains, called Nahal HaMi’ara, which is close to Haifa. These caves are an amazing anthropological site because over the last several thousands of years, they were home to many, ... read more
