We were hot and grumpy when we arrived in Poryia. I took a dip in the pool and it was wonderful. It was very windy which was just about the most refreshing feeling after the heat of downtown Tiberius. Tiberius was very busy, we had a light meal of israeli salad, babaganush, kabobs, french fries and hummus. We met up once again with our new friends Frank and Maryann from Victor BC Canada who were staying here at Birdsong as well. They had already been to the sites here, one being to the Galilee boat exhibit and the hill of the beatitudes. After a light supper of sandwiches and tea we hit the sack in a cool and breezy room surrounded by immense sliding screen doors. I slept through the night comfortably. As the name ... read more

I have now been in Jerusalem for four days and its been a strange experience. It's nice being with Carly and Derek. Most of the people are great and the Rabbis are nice, friendly and open to question and doubt. My two roommates at Kibbutz Lavi, Heather and Amanda, are lovely and entertaining people. Day 1: This turned into Day 2 with 30 hours of traveling for everyone and probably a total of 4 hours sleep for me. It was a very, very difficult, long and tiring day of travel. It made me realize what I was really getting into. This is hardcore study of Judaism. After 14 hours on a plane, the time in layover, check in, check out, customs, waiting for buses, traveling on buses and then activities to 'introduce and unite', we definitely ... read more

Today was our first full day in Israel. We both slept well, however Carly's cot folded in half on her when she went to lie down to sleep. Unfortunately both of her roommates were already sleeping when she went to bed and couldn't fix the bed. She tried but to no avail. The next day Derek attempted but to no avail. By the end of the day we had a new cot put in the room. Hopefully she will have a more peaceful sleep tonight. We woke up early to an amazing extravagant breakfast. Derek's favorite breakfast items were the pickles and chocolate pudding (not together though). Carly's favorite was the smoked white fish and cheese. We all got onto the bus and headed twords Tsfat. We were soaking in the mountainous scenery from the lower ... read more

It was a sick twist of fate that my first day of kitchen duty came just a few hours after Pub Night. Pub Night, here at kibbutz Baram, is taken very seriously. The pub is open Tuesday and Friday nights and is one of few organized social activities offered to both members and volunteers. Unless you're banned from the pub for missing your pub cleaning duty, everyone shows up for Pub Night. And though I wanted to be fresh and ready for my 5:45am kitchen call, I knew that if I missed out on my first Pub Night, I risked being socially ex-communicated. I managed to stay for only one beer, but as the Pub doesn't open until 10pm, I was out later than I would have liked. I did have the good sense to leave ... read more

We've been in Israel for one week now... and I was definitely ready to slow down and settle in to life at Kibbutz Messilot. I have been sleeping for 8-11 hours every night and I still feel lethargic during the day! I blame my constant fatigue on trying to follow Hebrew conversations and the warm weather. Each day we go to sleep to the sounds of a very loud air conditioner and an even louder alarm. I'm not sure what the alarm is for (probably a car or truck) but it is constant and pretty annoying! One of Yuda's friends says she thinks it must be the 'don't worry, everything is alright alarm' because nobody ever turns it off! When we wake up we wander across to Yuda's parent's house, eat, then either sit around or ... read more

Crossing the border from Jordan into Israel, again proved a frustrating experience, but after another long interrogation we finally made it outside and rejoined Dvir, our Israeli guide with whom we would spend the remainder of our time in the country. As we had lost several hours due to the delayed border crossing, we immediately left for Beth She-An an ancient Roman city built in the Byzantine era, though the area has been occupied for the last 5,000 years. This is where we had our first introduction to the concept of "Tels" - a tel is a large mound or hill of significant archaeological importance because there are several "layers" of civilizations built one on top of the other. Israel is dotted with hundreds of these tels due to it's long history of civilization, but unfortunately ... read more

Hello again!!! (lol...I know I just sent out an e-mail like 30 minutes ago). This weekend my friends Aidan, Leslie, Aly, Kelly, and I traveled to Jerusalem and Nazareth. I am planning on writing a long blog entry about all my trips to Jerusalem together so I will just update you on the day we spent in Nazareth. We arrived on Friday the 7th right before the start of Shabbath and checked into the Sisters of Nazareth Convent for the night. We were trilled to have heat as it has gotten rather cold at night and it was raining. We spent about 30-40 min. wondering around the city at night trying to find Tishreen, a medieval style, restaurant. Aly, Kelly, and I decided to spend the rest of the night reading and going to bed as ... read more

שלום! Hello!! I hope everyone is doing well. I am currently working on my final papers, presentations, and studying for exams. I just wanted to quickly and briefly update my blog and show everyone some pictures from the north of ISRAEL. I was fortunate to spend Shabbath on the 9th and 10th of November with four of my friends (Arik, Vali, Aviad, and Ben) in the Golan Heights. The Golan Heights (רמת הגולן‎) (هضبة الجولان) is in the northern part of Israel and was originally part of Syria pre-1967; this area of land borders Israel, Lebanon, Jordan, and Syria. Ben (from Boston) and I traveled with three Israelis by train, van, bus, and car to the north; departing from Beer Sheva. We were even able to visit Arik's home in Kfal Vradim (village of roses) as ... read more

Today was a day of adventure. We started with a fun and bumpy 2 hour jeep ride through the Golan Heights, basically a barren mountain range. It was particularly interesting to travel into the area that was held by the Syrians until the 6-day war in 1967. Overlooking the Israeli settlements in the green valley below, we could really understand the strategic importance of the Golan Heights, especially considering we could see Lebanon on the other side of the valley. Next we traveled to the Mystical city of Safed, one of the 4 holy cities according to tradition and the birthplace of Kabbalah.. Kabbalah is a mystical branch of Judaism (recently made famous by Madonna). We strolled through the narrow, cobblestone streets, visited two ancient synagogues, and shopped at the local artisan workshops - no Madonna ... read more
