Tuesday, 9/15 Today we started a bit late, but set out for Jaffa and Tel Aviv about 10. Jaffa is an ancient port city on the coast on the southern side of Tel Aviv. It's history goes back 4,000 years to the Egyptians. It is beautiful and old and preserved wonderfully. The artistic section is great for shopping and I bought some beautiful earrings handmade by an Israeli artist in the Yemenite style - filigree patterns. We also walked through the older bazaar that's kind of trashy but they have some cool things as well. Had Katy bargain a top for me as I hate to bargain!!! I love the dogs in the cities - they are mongrels but remind me of the photos I have seen of the Egyptian hunting dogs and the Afgani hunting ... read more

In my first weekend during the Ulpan we had a one day hike to the Golan Heights. The Golan Heights are situated in the north on the border to Syria. The description of the trip was as followed: "This is a typical Golan hike with gorges and waterfalls to swim under. The trail includes the Deborah and Gilabon falls, a bat cave and ancient ruins." I didn't see a bat cave, but the Gilabon falls were amazing. 35 metres tall falling into a pool of nice and cold water. The hike itself was about 4-5 hours long. Personally I think it was a little to hot for hiking, I hope to do another hike up there in a cooler time of year. We had an excellent tourguide giving us a lecture about the Golan Heights. Internationally ... read more

This current adventure on which I have embarked is remarkably different from any of the travel I have endeavored upon in the past in one key way; it's scope. In some ways I think more of this as the journey of an ex-pat than a vacation or trip. This (for the sake of my family, and Israeli Immigration control) is not to state any intention to remain here permanently, never to return, but even the year I have committed myself to is double that of any travels I have experienced in the past. I have not been overwhelmed by this thus far, in fact quite the contrary. I have found myself in a state of relaxation much more befitting to a vacation than the 'real life' I have consumed to date, but with all of the ... read more

שלום! Hello!! I hope everyone is doing well. I am currently working on my final papers, presentations, and studying for exams. I just wanted to quickly and briefly update my blog and show everyone some pictures from the north of ISRAEL. I was fortunate to spend Shabbath on the 9th and 10th of November with four of my friends (Arik, Vali, Aviad, and Ben) in the Golan Heights. The Golan Heights (רמת הגולן‎) (هضبة الجولان) is in the northern part of Israel and was originally part of Syria pre-1967; this area of land borders Israel, Lebanon, Jordan, and Syria. Ben (from Boston) and I traveled with three Israelis by train, van, bus, and car to the north; departing from Beer Sheva. We were even able to visit Arik's home in Kfal Vradim (village of roses) as ... read more

Today was a day of adventure. We started with a fun and bumpy 2 hour jeep ride through the Golan Heights, basically a barren mountain range. It was particularly interesting to travel into the area that was held by the Syrians until the 6-day war in 1967. Overlooking the Israeli settlements in the green valley below, we could really understand the strategic importance of the Golan Heights, especially considering we could see Lebanon on the other side of the valley. Next we traveled to the Mystical city of Safed, one of the 4 holy cities according to tradition and the birthplace of Kabbalah.. Kabbalah is a mystical branch of Judaism (recently made famous by Madonna). We strolled through the narrow, cobblestone streets, visited two ancient synagogues, and shopped at the local artisan workshops - no Madonna ... read more

After breakfast we left Tel Aviv to travel north to the ancient city of Caesarea, once the seat of Roman rule in the Middle East, built around 40 BC by Herod the Great: a Jewish king. It’s obvious that Herod had quite an ego based on the size of his port. He created a magnificent Roman city including an amphitheater, gymnasium, baths, a huge artificially protected port and a sophisticated water system that flowed from a spring 18 miles away. We even had a chance to wade through an excavated section of the underground water tunnel. We ate lunch in the quaint clean town of Zichron Ya’akov and visited the home of a Jewish 007 (a spy ring for the British in1917). We are spending the night in a hotel on Kibbutz HaGoshrim… the Catskills of ... read more

Today was another great day. We began the day again with another hike to the Banias river. The waters here are a crystal clear blue colour and are beautiful and clean. We hiked from the Banias waterfall to the source at a spring beside some ancient ruins from the 1st century CE. Afterwards, we hiked back, and then drove up Mount Hermon to the Nimrod Fortress. This fortress is one of the best-preserved ruins in all of Israel and the Middle East. Later, we took a scenic route around the entire Golan and then stopped at a Druze village along the way for lunch. Josh and I had falafel which was excellent - Noah stuck to pita & hummus. We continued our trek through the Golan, and then drove along the Eastern shore of the Kineret ... read more

Hi!It's Sarah Paster. Today was so much fun! We woke up a lot later, which was nice, and then we went on this awesome Jeep tour of the Golan hights. It was a bit cold outside, but since my Jeep (my family and Stamberg family) brought 3 blankets and 1 comforter, we were good. We drove through a Kibbutz, and then followed the path of the IDF during the 6-day war. Cool things we saw were a hot-spring, a bunker, and lots of cows. Hi! Now it's Sarah's sister, Becky. After the Jeep tour was over, we walked through a nature reserve and saw the Dan Springs. My favorite part was when everyone took a short rest at a lookout and all of the kids climbed a giant tree. The view was amazing! Then after a ... read more

Our tour awoke today to a beautiful and cloudless day. We enjoyed our stay at the Kinar Hotel which used to be on land that belonged to Syria. The hotel was situated on the Sea of Galilee which provides Israel with most of its freshwater supply. We started out today with a tour of the Golan Heights at Gadot Point. The bus drove along the twisting roads of the volcanic mountains that make up the Golan Heights. We arrived at the top of the Gadot Point which used to be a military lookout point, which looks right into Syria. The view from Gadot Point is beautiful but it has a military pass. This was an area where Israel and Syria has fought many times. Our tour guide was in the Israeli Defense Force in the 1970's ... read more

Living in Israel is different from living in Chicago in countless ways, one of which being that in Israel, the school year is built around the High Holy Days. There were no classes at all between last Thursday and today, Monday the 10th, so I had a long week for exploring. Last Sunday night I went on a very special trip with our group and with a high school class to Mount Meron, the site of an ancient synagoge and tradition of mystical Judaism. We walked and studied all night long in preparation for the new year. Monday morning I took a train from Haifa to Tel Aviv, where I met a friend of mine from my last trip to Israel. We spent the afternoon driving around Tel Aviv to various shelters and hostiles for soldiers ... read more
