After a truly grueling summer season that sucked up our entire June it was all of the sudden time to leave for our summer tour to Israel and Turkey. Casual. Not to mention work has been beyond overwhelming as we approach Fall application deadlines in just a couple weeks. I met the travel opportunity with mixed emotions - it was clearly the opportunity of a lifetime but also at a shitty, busy time at work and in life and it carried a hefty price tag. I had actually declined the opportunity but upon learning that my $750 deposit was potentially non-refundable I was swayed the other way and said F it, it's Israel and Turkey. How has can that be (leaving ISIS out of this). Time to prepare before leaving was non-existant. We actually sang a ... read more

Sharon wasn’t happy when my cell phone alarm woke us at 5 am instead of the 6 am she’d planned, as it does every Monday morning for my MWF racquetball, it’s just today I’m not playing racquetball. We actually have quite a bit left to do before our planned departure at 8:30 AM. Bags to load into the car, items in the fridge likely to spoil while we’re away to discard, garbage to port to the curb for Tuesday morning pickup left in garbage bags since nobody will be around to secure the dump cans after pickup, lunches to make from our leftover Der Dutchman Amish turkey. It looks to be a fine day to drive to Chicago, to start our 24-hour + journey to the Holy Land. We have a 10:30 AM mass at St. ... read more

On Tuesday (May 22nd) we took off for a 3-day excursion through the Shephelah, Coastal Plain (S of Tel Aviv), and the deserts of the Negev. Our first stop took us far and away from our home base of Jerusalem westward, bumping over valleys and over bridges on the modern roads which now scream past the ancient trade routes and fortresses. We eventually turned off at a small industrial complex, and the large tour bus (freight liner?) began slowly winding on a small gravel road past wheat fields and vineyards. If our tour guide had been any but the fearless and atrociously knowledgable Brian of Fresno Pacific Uni, we probably would have been slightly more suspicious ending up where we did! Our driver's efforts were soon rewarded, however, as we disembarked at the base of Khirbet ... read more

Today we leave the Sea of Galilee and see Mount Tabor, Ein Harod, Beth-Shean, the Jordan Valley, Jericho, Qumran, the Judean Desert and then to The Grand Court hotel in Jerusalem. Mount Tabor is mentioned with Mount Hermon in Psalms 89:12, attesting to its beauty and majesty. Judges 4:4-16 cites Mount Tabor as the site of an Israelite victory over the Canaanites. Ein Harod is a kibbutz situated in the Jizreel Valley. It was the home of Yitzhak Tabenkin, one of the founders of the United Kibbutz Movement. Beth-Shean was originally a Canaanite City situated at the entrance of the Valley of Jezreel from the Jordan Valley. It is about 120 m below sea level. Beth-Shean was under Philistine rule at the time of King Saul. After killing the king and his sons the victors hung ... read more

Another intensive days of visiting: Capernaum, Korazim (Chorazin), Sermon on the Mount area, Hazor, Dan, Caesarea Philippi, Golan, and a boat ride across the Sea of Galilee. Capernaum is a city of major importance associated with the ministry of Jesus. Many miracles were performed here. The account in Luke 4:31-37 tells of how Jesus healed a demonized man. The following verses speak of his healing of Peter's mother-in-law. John 4:46-54 describes a long-distance miracle: Jesus was 26 km away, in Cana, when he cured the son of a member of the royal court of Herod Antipas. It was near Capernaum that Jesus walked on the waters of the Sea of Galilee (Matthew 14:23-34). At a tax office in Capernaum Jesus invited Matthew to become the 5th disciple to join him. Capernaum was mentioned with Chorazin and ... read more

The second day of touring was intense: Caesarea, the region of Samaria, the Plains of Sharon, Megiddo, the Valley of Jizreel, Mount Carmel, Kishon Valley, Haifa and Tiberias.....yes, I am serious. Driving out of Tel Aviv, we learned about the kibboutz, the Hebrew word for communal settlement. The original kibboutz were built on the communist model - babies were taken at 3 months of age and were cared for by the community; education was provided as well as other basic needs. Residents worked only on the kibboutz and were not permitted to take jobs outside. For the past 30 years, the kibboutz operate as private businesses - they are privately owned and workers receive a salary. Of all the mesmerizing places we visited, Caesarea is one of the sites that stood out the most for me, ... read more

The Ancient archeological site of Caesarea has everything from ancient Roman ruins to Crusader fortifications to modern day theater shows at the sea front. Though if theaters, hippodromes, amphitheaters, bath houses, temples, ports and fortification motes are not a good enough reason for you to go visit the city allow me to present to you the off the beaten tour of Caesarea: From Land to Sea: After you check out the super expensive shops and art galleries along the port you can stroll along what used to be the most spoken about port in the Roman Empire and the only man made port of that size! King Herod himself set out to built yet another eye opener in his kingdom. The Jewish lucrative temple and Masada palace in the middle of the desert were not enough, ... read more
