My wife and I set off on a Cruise Holiday on board the Ship ‘Sundream’ and we arrived at Civitavecchia - which is a port fairly close to Rome. Whilst others on the Cruise Holiday went by coach we decided to do the journey by train to reach Rome and take in the day that the late Pope John Paul was creating 32 (I think !) new Cardinals. Having alighted at the train station we made our way to St.Peters Square, an easy journey of just a few hundred yards. Only cost us some 13 Euros for the two of us, whilst the coach fare from the Cruise ship was 52 gbp each - a fantastic saving. Our plan was to go to St. Peters, see the ‘main event’ and then do all the other ... read more

Hello, Today I had a busy day. Our driver picked us up at 8:00a and we immediately proceeded to Rome. From Civitavecchia where our boat docked, it took over an hour to get there. First we went to Vatican City/St. Peter's Basilica. There was a mass going on when we entered so the huge pipe organ was playing and people were singing, it was really beautiful. It is one of the most beautiful places in the world! It was extremely crowded today, the most people we have ever seen there, so we didn't get to go to Pope John Paul II grave, the line was so long it would have been hours waiting time:( After we visited the basilica we went to see a lot of other things including the Pantheon (I wasn't too impressed), The ... read more

A lot has happened since the last time I've updated. We did in fact go to see the Pope on Thursday, which was awesome. I had never been to a Catholic Mass before, so I guess it couldn't have been any better than having it held by the Pope. We decided to stay an extra day in Rome, and skip the short side trip to Pisa. We originally had planned to get up early this morning and go to the Cinque Terre, stopping in Pisa shortly, so we could get mostly 2 days and 2 nights there, then go to Switzerland. However, the Holy Day that allowed us to see the Pope Thursday night prevented us from seeing the Vatican that day, and forced us to see it this morning. So instead of being rushed through ... read more

Figuring out what to say out of all the things there are to say is very difficult. The flight was uneventful, aside from a few bumps now and then. Leslie wore little wrap things around her wrists that prevented any motion sickness and highly recommends them for anyone who might suffer the same malady. We actually got fed two meals without having to pay for them, which was good, and got a couple of glasses of free wine to boot! The first thing we did -- unless you count finding the train, finding the metro, and walking a kajillion blocks as the first thing -- was to walk to Vatican City. The bedroom balcony has a view of the dome of the basilica and it is only a 10 minute walk. Today we attended the papal ... read more

Recipe for Big Change of Plans * 1 Liz * 1 Pia * 1 Bottle Cretan Wine * 1 Tight Budget * 2 Easily returnable Eurail passes * a pinch of distain for crowds, commercialism and the Euro Hey there kiddleywinks. Guess what? We've made a MONUMENTAL descision, which probably is monumental for no one but us, but just play along. We've pretty much scrapped our plans for seeing the rest of Western Europe, and have decided to travel in the exact opposite direction. We're goin' to the land of goulash, gypsies and headscarves. Having had such an incredible time in Turkey, we decided to take the advice of our travel companions and further explore the East. Next stop: Croatia! Wish us luck and things. Anyway, having said that, I must expound the beauty of Italy ... read more

Juz zwatpilam, ze cokolwiek zobaczymy, ... read more

This morning we were dropped off at La Giustiniana station, and as there was a train strike today, we were expecting the worst. Our first destination was to the Piazza San Pietro, home to the Basilica of St. Peter's. It seemed quite busy today, well apparently busier than normal. It was only when we got closer that Paul said the late Pope John Paul II was going to be reading his sermon today to the pilgrims. We couldn't believe it, what luck we thought. We did have a tour of the Colosseum booked up for that morning, but we all decided that we wanted to stay to see The Pope, as this would be a once in a lifetime experience. We could always go onto see The Colosseum later that day, so we waited at the ... read more
