So, the past two days have been pretty boring.... Except for when we got to see the Pope. When we got to the Vatican we were escorted by a Swiss Guard into our place in the chapel... It wasn't in St. Peter's Basilica, but rather in this massive theatre which sat probably around a thousand people. Then we watched via video feed as the Pope went into the Basilica and greeted the people who weren't special enough to get seats in our building... Then, he came into our building and walked down the aisles as everyone mobbed him. Unfortunately, we were in the back row in the middle, so I didn't ever get very close, but it was still really neat. One thing I did notice was in the very front row there was a ... read more

Early in the morning we left our apartment in Rome and joined the line to enter the Vatican Museum. I had heard that the line here can sometimes stretch on for hours, but to our surprise we were inside the museum after only waiting for about twenty minutes. I had also heard that the Vatican was pretty strict about maintaining a modest dress code, which really didn't seem to be the case either. In the museum we joined and English language tour which included all of us wearing pretty stylish headphones and walking around in a pack. It was funny to see all the naked statues that had leaves glued to their crotches so as to make them suitable to be shown at the Vatican. Also, I was surprised at all the stuff the early Catholics ... read more

St. Peter's Basilica is an unassuming name for what seems to surpass all churches in the world. And well it should be, as it is situated in Vatican City, the residence of the Pope and the Holy See. However, it is not a cathedral. Our plans to visit the Basilica were foiled when we arrived on Saturday, June 9th, and were turned away being told that President Bush was inside speaking with the Pope at the moment. This papal visit was the cause of a spread of riots throughout Rome, particularly at the location of the American Embassy. The Embassy happened to be located next to the Opera House, and so our hopes of a romantic evening seeing the classical Italian opera "La Traviata" in Rome were also dashed. The marchers, smoke bombs and police didn't ... read more

Buona sera (Good evening)! Our first full day in Italy was really busy, but extremely memorable! Our day was spent at the Vatican, home of the Roman Catholic Church and its leader - Pope Benedict XVI. We had to get up very early (6:00 am) so we could arrive in St. Peter's Square by 8:00 to get good seats for the pope's weekly General Audience, which is open to the public. I couldn't believe what good seats we got! We were in the front section, and had a very good view of the proceedings. When the pope was driven around the square at the beginning of the program (after we waited in the open square for about 2 hours!), he came very close by where we were sitting. I couldn't have been more than 20 ... read more

Another day and another new country, albeit the World's smallest one with no borders. We were up earlyish and made our way to the Vatican where we spotted the monster queues. Damn. And it looked like a 3 hour wait, so we managed to hook ourselves onto a tour, which turned out to be the best decision of the day. We skipped the queues and were inside the Vatican Museums within 10 minutes. We saw some hugely impressive and ancient marble sculptures before regrouping in the courtyard. It was here I saw the funniest thing all day.We were told the Swiss guard were these amazing elite guards who had to have 2 years of military training in Switzerland and 2 years hand-to-hand combat training, etc. Yet the first time I saw them, they were on ... read more

Today was a lot of walking. I got up early and went to St. Peter's Basilica, a short walk from the hostel. I had to wait in line for security screenings, but it was worth it. From there I headed to Castel Sant' Angelo, which I got into for free. Next, I went to the Plazza del Popolo, where the 155th Anniversary of the founding of the Roman police was occuring. I then tried to head back to the hostel for a short break, as I was really exhausted from the walking and not having been around 80 degree temps for quite some time. Unfortunately the hostel was closed for cleaning, so I took the metro line to to Plazza Barberini. There I took pictures of the Fountana del Tritone. I then walked to the ... read more

02 May 2007: Spent the entire day in and around the Vatican. Wednesday is the Pope's mid-week audience, so the entire square in front of St. Peter's ringed by the Bernini colonnade was setting up for Benedict XVI's 1000 audience. We decided to visit the Vatican Museum first. Lines everywhere make Disneyland on a holiday seem totally rationale and doable. 1 hour 50 minutes of standing in line in the drizzle later, we got in. Of course the drizzle turned to complete downpour the minute we got inside, so good fortune at a minimum was on our side. The downpour lasted only 15 minutes but left some great contrasts in the sky, Highlights of the immense collection were of course Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sistine_Chapel), which I'd never seen but Mom had seen pre-cleaning, as well ... read more

His Eminence raises his eyes from the document he was studying, he sees me and with austere manners signals me to enter. It’s not exactly an invitation, it’s rather the badly disguised blow of tail of a horse tryin to get rid of annoying flies. He’s clearly receiving me in bad will: an awful beginning. It had taken me weeks to get an appointment, then, once fixed such a meeting, causes of act of God had held him away from the episcopal palace: just that day, just at that hour! Hence, this time I showed up without any appointment, adducing the urgency like cause. And it is true: I’m leaving in the evening! The bishop’s office is small and modestly furnished; the style is in line with the rest of the palace with no sign of ... read more

I went to the Vatican today. I climbed up the cupola of Saint Peter's Basillica. The walk is quite exhausting as there are many steps which curve up, some of which are steep and narrow. The top offers a great view of the Vatican and Rome. I got to see the Pope (one has to get tickets beforehand). He holds a general audience on Wednesdays, and the room is completely packed. I got in an hour before it started but I still got seated at the back. That ended up being great, because the Pope enters through the back, and allowed us in the back to get right up close to him (a few people touched him). The atmosphere was wild, like a rock concert: people were screaming and shouting wildly and standing up on chairs ... read more
